She survived. Wood arrived in Pocatello on Nov.

1, Hiedeman said. In addition to killing the 11-year-old girl, he has admitted kidnapping and raping two teen-agers and robbing three businesses there. Wood has pleaded guilty to murdering the 11-year-old girl, and a hearing to determine his sentence is set for Dec. 7. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

No death penalty has been imposed in Idaho since the 1950s. Caddo sheriffs deputies said they will send an investigator to Idaho after Wood's sentencing to try to clear the Coleman case. Wood was not a suspect until his confession and deputies have no physical evidence to bolster their case. Roy Coleman said he never knew details of his mother's death until he read news accounts of Wood's confession. He said he believes Wood killed her.

"It's a big relief, finally knowing what happened," said Coleman, who was two days shy of his 14th birthday when his mother disappeared. "If they took him to trial and he's convicted, I think everything will be said and done. At least they've finally got somebody." "He never even raised his voice in our house while we were married." Ms. Wood, who met James Wood through a friend in 1987 and married him the following year, said she now believes he committed the crimes tied to him. Wood once told her he had been imprisoned for robbery, but never mentioned battery and rape convictions from the 1970s. Ttow can you not know? I talked to him (after his arrest in Idaho) and he admitted it," she said.

The whole world has changed; everything is definitely different. I'm not sure youH ever trust anybody else." In his interviews with Pocatel-lo police, Wood claimed he turned against women when he was about 8. His mother had perished in a fire at a potato processing plant across from his school in Idaho. Crying, Wood said he put his arms around the waist of a woman. Rather than consoling him, he said, she pushed him away.

"Wood was very clear that ever since that exact time he has hated women, especially that particular woman," said Sgt Scott Shaw. Wood said he has committed murders in Idaho and Louisiana, shot and stabbed women in Louisiana and Missouri, and committed rapes and robberies in seven states. But is Wood another Henry Lee Lucas? For 18 months after his arrest in Texas in 1983, Lucas told of committing nearly 600 murders in 27 states, including two in Bossier Parish. Police cleared 210 cases largely or totally on the basis of Lucas' statements before he began recanting all but one. The two murders attributed to Lucas in Bossier a woman killed along a railroad track in 1978 and another found near Bellevue in 1981 were never tried because of lack of evidence.

So far, though, police believe Wood's confessions. "He (Wood) doesnt tell us everything. We haven't found one instance where he has lied," said Bannock County Prosecutor Mark Hiedeman, who is seeking the death penalty against Wood for the slaying of Jeralee Underwood. Underwood was abducted last June as she collected money from customers on her newspaper route in Pocatello, then raped and killed. There is no reason for him to tell us those things," Hiedeman said of Wood.

"Every one he's told us about that we've checked out has been true." Wood told police he first came to Shreveport around 1963 when his father, who moved here after he got out of prison, sent Wood a bus ticket after he escaped from a juvenile rehabilitation center in Idaho. Wood married in 1966 after moving to Missouri. Shortly after that, he told police, he went on a "rampage" after quitting his job at a flying school raping women in Missouri and Illinois. He moved to his brother's house in Bossier City in 1967. He was arrested that year after breaking into a Bossier City apartment, stabbing two young women and trying to rape one.

He was convicted of aggravated battery and paroled in 1971, court records show. Wood was severely burned in the Bossier Parish Jail while awaiting trial for that attack. The following morning, Smith threw a cup of burning lighter fluid on Wood when he walked into the cell, said Bill Gray, a former sheriffs investigator. Wood became a truck driver after his release from prison, driving throughout the country. The late 1970s is when his crime spree started in earnest," Hiedeman said.

"(Wood and his brother) were doing three or four armed robberies a week for about a year and a half in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas" in 1976 and 1977. Shirley Coleman, who worked at the Western Electric phone assembly plant in Shreveport, disappeared Christmas Eve 1976. Wood has confessed to abducting the 33-year-old woman at a shopping center at Greenwood and Jewella. He drove her to woods near the General Electric plant, where he raped and shot her. He has given a detailed account of the crime, Caddo Parish sheriffs deputies said.

Authorities here also are looking at Wood to see if there is any evidence of his involvement in disappearances of two women last seen at Eastgate shopping center in Shreveport in 1979: Arrilla Vaul and Dodie Gay. Wood has not mentioned either of those crimes in his statements to police. Wood was arrested in 1977 for robbing a pizza restaurant in Baton Route. While free on bond on that charge, he moved back to north Louisiana. He worked as a truck driver for a Bossier City oil company, married a Shreveport woman and moved into a house on Regent Street He was then arrested for raping a woman in Lincoln Parish after she had car trouble and called for assistance on her CB radio, authorities said.

Wood was convicted of rape in 1979 and imprisoned until 1986, Department of Corrections records show. After working briefly as a truck driver and on a tugboat in South Louisiana, he returned again to Shreveport in 1987, where he met his wife-to-be. Mrs. Wood said he worked at an insulation company, a film laboratory and a welding shop. "I can't believe he committed no crimes, but he won't tell us about any between 1986 and 1992," Hiedeman said.
