Known as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur culminates a 10-day period that begins with Rosh1 Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. i i The observance, which lasts from Tuesday evening to this evening, includes a fast from all food and drink. The purpose of.the lay is to reflect on the prior year, repent from sin and ask forgive- ness of people and God. -) "This is a day of total devotion to prayers and the spiritual side of one's life. It's an inward examination of one's human's faults," said Howard Ross, executive director of the North Louisiana Jewish Federation.

"In that sense, it is cathartic and offers a self cleansing. It's more than a New Year's resolution. It's an examination of self." i Vt. John Raymond Cosier JACKSON, MS John Raymond Cosier, 44, died of a brain tumor on Friday at Whispering Pines Hospice. A memorial service was held at 5 p.m.
