He had been publisher for 22 years, a title held previously by his father and grandfather. He was a past chairman of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, and a director of Landmark Communications and the Seattle Times Co. and Allied Daily Newspapers.

Born February 26, 1939, in Harrison County, he was a son of Bemice Harber Craver of Harleton and the late Joseph James Craver. He repaired small engines, and attended Harleton public schools. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy. Other survivors include his wife, Emma Jackson Craver of Harleton, whom he married Feb: 16, 1962, in Marshall; son, Joseph L. of Harleton; daughter and son-in-law.
