Betsy Clayton CONCORD, N.C. Rusty Wallace is an unsinkable optimist. In the midst of what is one of the most frustrating seasons of his career, Wallace is as upbeat as ever. "I can't believe all the things that have happened to us this year," Wallace said. "We still believe we can win every time we go out there.

I expect to go out there and win on Sunday. With the team we've got, and the his technical director, Patrick Head; and former team designer Adrian Newey forced court president Antonio Costanzo to adjourn until Oct. 28. The three will be questioned Oct. 29 three days after the conclusion of the 1 997 Formula One season.

"It was a logistic problem. It was impossible to find room for the Williams people," said Oreste Domin-ioni, one of the defense lawyers for the Williams team. Hotels in Bologna and nearby towns are sold out for an international trade fair. David Coulthard, the British driver of the McLaren-Mercedes team and recent winner of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, will testify Oct. 28.

The trial of six Formula One officials, charged with manslaughter for Senna's fatal crash during the 1994 San Marino GP, is expected to continue through the end of November. Prosecutor Maurizio Passarini contends that a badly modified steering column in Senna's Williams-Renault cracked and caused the fatal crash. was unaware that NASCAR already had received a check for $5,000, but NASCAR president Bill France Jr. went along with the gag, accepting the shipment with a smile. Wallace, smiling again, was looking forward to Sunday's UAW-GM 500 (1:05 p.m., TBS).

"We've struggled a lot this year and we're finally getting it turned he said. "I'm confident that the motor problems we've been having this year and last year are handled. We've been able to turn the corner with every part of the team." Wallace currently is 13th in the points, far out of the championship picture. But he is only 84 points out of 1 0th with five races remaining. Senna trial continues IMOLA, Italy Citing logistical problems, three defendants in the trial over the death of Ayrton Senna failed to appear in court to give testimony.

The absence of Frank Williams, owner of the Williams-Renault team; of those were top-5s. The low point of the season came Monday in the rain-delayed race at Martinsville, where Wallace was in charge until NASCAR penalized him for jumping a restart with only 23 laps remaining. Wallace, who doesn't hide his feelings very well, railed against NASCAR's decision after the race and was fined $5,000 for his negative remarks. "What's such a shame is the fact that my guys kicked butt all day and we don't have anything to show for it," said Wallace, who wound up 15th. "The record book certainly won't show that we had the best pit stops all day "I just feel so bad for the guys.

We led the most laps we won the battle on pit road and just go home with a 1 5th-place finish, and that stinks." Nothing can keep the 41-year-old racer down for long, though. Friday, with no Winston Cup practice scheduled, Wallace had an armored truck deliver the fine in pennies, 500,000 of them, to NASCAR at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He equipment we've got, WALLACE we should be winning." Wallace, the 1989 Winston Cup champion, has driven for Penske Racing South since 1991 and has become used to running at or near the front This year, he has won one race but failed to finish 10 times.
