PAGE EIGHT The Daily Inter Lake Monday March 3 1969 1 1 Killed When Race Car Hits Crowd Of Spectators COVINGTON Ga (AP) Spokesmen for major car racing organizations and Gov Lester Maddox called for stricter safe ty precautions after an accident at a Covington track killed 11 spectators and injured at least 46 The accident Sunday at the Yellow River Drag Strip oc curred when a fiberglass Cama ro weighing less than 1000 pounds and traveling around 180 miles an hour went out of con trol about 250 yards from the finish 'line The racer crashed into an embankment went over a wire fence and mowed down the crowd lining the track There was no guard rail to got out of the area we saw bodies lying between the man got caught up un der the said Jimmy Ed wards 18 of Atlanta must have dragged him at least 100 Sidney Castleberry Jr 25 of Kennesaw said were terror stricken They were screaming Several witnesses said the track announcer had warned spectators to move back from the track at the start
