Standard-Examiner (Copyright 1931 Consolidated Press Association) NEW YORK Sept 5 Ernie Sc ha a served notice this week that he must be reckoned with when an opponent for Champion Max Schmeling Is considered next spring smashing knockout victory over Vittorio Cam polo was no fluke and the price on chances In the heavyweight sweepstake was lessened considerably The manner in which Schaaf beat down his bigger opponent was all the more impressive in that Ernie took a wallop to land one and instead of backtracking when stung he bore in and flailed away with both hands A fighter of this type comes up but rarely and when he does the fans usually cotton to him in droves Yet despite the good work the sailor has shown since he left the' navy six years ago to cast his lot with the leather pushers he has not caught the popular fancy and this may cost him a chance at crown The champion Is chiefly concerned with what his opponent can attract to the box office and so far Schaaf has failed to click Fewer than five thousand fans turned out for the pampolo fight Pre-battle dope figured this to be one of the best punching battles cf the year and so it turned out But the fans thought otherwise and stayed away The Boston battler appears to be a slow thinker He does not regain his poise as gracefully or as quickly as other fighters This gives the fans an idea that Ernie will make one bad mistake in an important contest and before he can adjust himself will be belted out of the picture This Idea does not fit in with what Ernie has shown when pitted against a smart boxer like Tommy Loughran Tommy has two victories over Schaaf and the latter has a like number against the smooth working phian These are held against the sailor but it is a fact that Ernie's work against the same men Loughran has beaten has been more impressive and decisively in Schaafs favor Loughran outspeeded and outsmarted Campolo In a 10-round contest In the eighth round Big Vic landed a solid wallop on Jaw and it came mighty near spelling curtains for the former light heavyweight champion Against Schaaf Campolo was never dan gerous and while he got in several hard smashes to the ribs Ernie came right back and cut up the Argentine battler considerably On their work against the gaunt Gau cho Schaaf certainly showed more punching power and lasting qualities than Loughran Yet Loughran out drew Ernie four to one at the gate Schaafs failure to hit It off with the fans brings to mind the popu lartty of Charlie Retzlaff the Da kota bomber The night after Schaaf and Campolo had It out Charlie was sent In against a supposedly worn out veteran Joe Sekyra and two Tans showed up for every one attracted to what was considered a major contest Sekyra made Retzlaff taste resin dust for the first time and broke a streak of 32 consecutive victories Yet the next time Retzlaff is billed to appear it Is a sure bet that he will pack any club in this city Retzlatrs defeat must not be considered the beginning of the end for the hard hitting Dakotan There is too much of promise in the big fellow to dismiss him lightly He Is a crude one when boxing form is considered He has yet to learn how to hold his punches and make his openings Charlie is obsessed with the Idea of rushing in and hitting all the time He Is over-anxious and makes the bad almost suicidal lead with the right hand Pitted against a smart veteran like Sekyra who has swapped blows with the best of the light heavies and heavyweights it was a foregone conclusion that if Joe was in condition and had the will to fight It out and pick his spots he would cut and slash his inexperienced foe This is Just what Joe did He held off and made Retzlaff lead Slipping the lead Sekyra sidled inside hit and grabbed Retzlaff could not fa thorn these tactics and learned what It means to hit and get away A Retzlaff-Schaaf contest is out of the question for the time being The latter knows far too much for the Dakota blacksmith Those who figure on such a bout should consider a match between Sekyra and Schaaf first and the chances are that idea will not prove so popular Jack Hurley manager of Retzlaff should be thankful Sekyra showed him his error and while the defeat spoiled what appeared to be an attractive match It probably saved a brilliant prospect from fistic oblivion 4 Totals 8 8 13 27 CHICAGO AB RHPO iJ) 3 4 4 4 4 3 3
