The acquisition is subject to passage of a physical examination by Ford who underwent surgery after receiving a knee injury in the ninth game of his 1971 rookie season. At the time of the injury, the former Texas Southern player was the leading rusher for the Saints with 379 yards. He rejoined the team in the ninth game of the 1972 season but primarily worked with special teams. CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Browns of the National Football League put veteran defensive end Rich Jackson, 32, and rookie running hack George Greenfield, 22, on aivers Wednesday.

And Rozelle, who is very bright, would understand the mnnd of the viewing public which, after one year of exposure to free TV, would be certain to regard it as an inalienable right. It is the NFL's rotten luck that the Congress of the United States meets in Washington, a city peculiarly sensitive to the caste system involving home-game tickets. The have-nots, who lacked both the foresight and the resources to invest in Redskin season tickets many years ago, now find the home games off-limits at any price and untouchable by congressmen as well. The NFL is playing for higher stakes than the mere preservation of its no -home game TV policy.

The club owners are now envisioning the day when pay TV comes to pass. But FCC regulations now say no pay television is permitted within two years after a show has been on free television. Thus do club owners fear an extension of the Pastore bill. Under test, after the Pastore bill is passed by the whole Congress, will be Pozelle's contention that the NFL will be badly wounded by it, and that the bill is asking the c'ub owners to take unbearable losses. Give the people a taste of free television and attendance at the games will drop, especially in poor weather, Rozelle has contended.

Too many ticket buyers would be content to take in the game on TV. Rozelle can win his case if NFL attendance drops this season, providing him with a stern I told you so to Congress. This puts the NFL's commissioner in the anomalous position of hoping there will be thousands more stay-aways this season, that empty seats will multiply in the stadiums, that profits will dwindle and that concessionaires will scream at the drop in sales of the fiO-cent hot dog. If all goes well for the NFL rip.spite the free televising of home games, and the big parks are 96 per cent filled as usual, it -would be a terrible blow to Rozelle and his club owners. How then to come up with an effective defense against the extension by Congress of Pastore law which would L.A.

Times-Washington Post News Service WASHINGTON Pete Rozelle, the National Football League commissioner, has recognized privately that John 0. Pastore, the senator from Rhode Island, is not only in scoring territory with S. 1841 but is unstoppable. This is the Pastore bill, already endorsed by the full Senate Commerce Committee, that will liberate from television blackouts all this season's home games that are sold out 48 hours in advance of kickoff. It is a strategic retreat that Rozelle is now making.

He has called off his troops in Washington lawyers, lobbyists and friends in Congress. The commissioner has decided to live with the Pastore bill, which calls for a one-year experiment with no blackouts and thus is only a one-year sentence. Rozelle is resigned to losing a battle, but he has no intention of losing the war against congressional meddlers in the NFL good thing. (APTelfohoto) Bosox Catcher Carlton Fisk a la MuhammadAli Yank Thiirrnan Muruson hits hark in 9th roiuid at Fenway. A free for all and an often criticized trade lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 3 2 victory over New York Wednesday, knocking the Yankees out of first place in the American League East.

"Both guys did what they were supposed to do," New York manager Ralph Houk said, describing the play which touched off a melee in top of the ninth inning. "One tried to block the plate and hold the ball for the out, while the other barrelled in and tried to knock the ball loose," Houk said. "It was very simple. Part of the game." New York catcher Thurman Munson bowled over Boston receiver Carlton Fisk when Gene Michael missed a low inside pitch while trying to hunt on the suicide squeeze. Munson came up swinging, hitting Fisk with a long right-hand punch, and the brawl was on.

When order was restored, both catchers were ejected and Bob Montgomery replaced Fisk. With two out in the Boston ninth, Montgomery singled, took second on a walk to Rick Miller, and scored as Mario Guerrero singled through the middle. Boog Powell's ninth homer of the baseball season, a shot over the centerfield gave the Orioles the edge they needed for the victory. At Chicago, Hal Mc.Rae slammed a two-run triple and a solo homer and Steve Busby out-pitched 20-game winner Wilbur Wood as the Kansas City Royals defeated the White Sox 4-2.

Busby with ninth inning relief aid from Joe Hoer-ner yielded only five hits and struck out eight in raising his record to 9-10. The loss dropped Wood's mark to 20 15. It was Kansas City's fourth consecutive victory and 11th in 14 outings. And at Milawukee, Gates Brown delivered the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Brewers 2-1 for their eighth straight victory.
