8C NEWS-PRESS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1995 PREPS STANDINGS Class 5A, District 11 4 for 52 yards in the second half said, "We run the clock well, we knew what we had to do." "We were talking all week about knocking off a team we could beat, and we did it." Cape Coral coach James Hale: "We made mistakes in our kicking game and you can't do that in a close game. Naples has a lot of class." with 4:12 remaining and gave Naples another shot. Maurizi lost the ball at the Cape Coral 39, however, and it looked as though Cape Coral had dodged the final bullet. A conservative run sequence on the next possession forced the Sea-hawks to punt the ball with only 1:15 remaining in the game. Sears, who had fumbled a punt in the first quarter, went back to kick.

Jamie Mendicino, however, burst around the line and blocked the punt, setting up Naples at the Cape Coral 25. Three plays later, Mansberger trotted out and calmly delivered the ball through with the winning kick. Maurizi, who was a perfect 4-for- returned a punt to the Naples 33-yard line and a personal foul penalty set up Sears for the easy chip. The way Cape Coral had been holding Naples down, nine points seemed plenty. Naples quarterback 'Chris Mau-rizi had other ideas.

After being entirely shut down in the first half, 0-5 with an interception, Maurizi caught fire. He engineered a 74-yard drive, capped off by Howard Green's 10-yard scamper around left end. Maurizi hit Damar McCrary with first down passes of 10 and 30 yards. The drive took 3:49 and brought the Golden Eagles within two. A clipping penalty on a first down run forced Cape Coral to kick the ball A victory would have kept Cape Coral a game behind district-leading Barron Collier in District 5A-11.

BC defeated Fort Myers 48-7 on Friday night. After shutting down Naples in the first half, Cape Coral went ahead 9-0 on Matt Sears' 27-yard chip shot with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Seahawks allowed Naples only 17 total yards in the first half, with eight plays going for either no gain or a loss. Senior Alphonzo Kendrick's 54-yard sprint around end and down the left sideline had given Cape Coral a 6-0 lead with six minutes remaining in thefirsthalf. Late in the third, Jamie Thomas By KEVIN FLECKNEY News-Press staff There's something about wet fields and key district matchups that doesn't work too well for Cape Coral High School's football team.

In a game that was eerily similar to a last-minute loss two weeks ago at Fort Myers, Cape Coral lost to Naples 10-9 on Tim Mansberger's 37-yard field goal with 29 seconds left Friday night and in the process, may have seen its playoff hopes slip away. Cape Coral (6-2, 2-2) took a nine-point lead into the final period and appeared to have had the game won several times. Appearances, however, can be quite deceiving. District Overall Pts. "They didn't move the ball consistently on us. We just made a couple of mistakes." Those mistakes included an interception by senior Dedrick McLain at the LaBelle 1-yard line, and a sailing field-goal snap in the fourth quarter that killed any chances for a comeback.

Bishop Verot did give LaBelle a scare when senior Jamell Johnson, who ran for 170 yards on 27 carries, broke a 60-yard score on the Vikings' first play in the second half. LaBelle answered with a 15-play, 67-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversion, in which Brett Basquin caught a 6-yard TD pass from Rimes. "We've been known to play conservatively," said Dunbar of the conversions, one of which was fourth-and-5. "I said it's now or never and took a chance." "We're playing Avon Park for the district title (on Nov. 3)," Basquin said.

"Offense scores points but.

Gary shouted to his team. "Defense wins games!" the team shouted back. That was the case Friday. Lehigh's offense scored 17 points, capped by Matt Groff's 25-yard field goal in overtime. Lehigh is now 4-4 and 2-1 in its district.

It was the defense that saved the night. When Lemon Bay (3-4, 1-2) had its turn in overtime to run four plays from the Lehigh 1 0, the visitors didn't get anywhere. Their 229 rushing yards compiled in regulation didn't help. Minus 3 yards on first down. No gain on second down.

And a loss of 2 yards on third down. Lemon Bay's Eric Schaum's 33-yard field-goal attempt was wide right. This was a stirring victory for Lehigh, which led 14-0 through three quarters. Lemon Bay, however, took advantage of Lehigh fumbles and tied the game in the fourth quarter on 3- and 8-yard touchdown runs by 1 Chris Slattery. Although Lehigh lost three fumbles in the second half, Gary liked the way his play ers responded.

"We have a big heart," Gary told his team. "We do not quit." The Lehigh defense knew what it had to do in overtime. "We had to dig real deep in our hearts," defensive lineman Thelton Jacob said. "That was just like practice," linebacker Duane Bonner said. "First-and-goal from the 10.

Just like practice. The defense always wins." The offense, however, scored the points. A little more than two minutes into the game, Lehigh running back Broderick Daniels shot 63 yards up the middle of the field for a touchdown. Daniels rushed for 101 yards on eight carries. With 6:59 remaining in the second period, Lehigh's Rod Pasley took a pitch from quarterback Josh Spry and scooted around the left end on a 3-yard scoring run.

Cypress Lake scored in the first quarter after a 23-yard punt by DeSoto gave it good field position at the DeSoto 38. Two plays later, Langley found Hines for a 7-0 lead.

Cypress Lake struck again on the first play of the second quarter when Hines capped a seven-play, 66-yard drive for a 14-0 lead. The march featured a pair of big plays a 16-yard pass from Langley to Eddie McCarthy and a 21-yard connection from Langley to Winston Watkins. After Danny Rogers' 35-yard field goal gave Cypress Lake a 17-0, the Panthers closed out the scoring midway through the fourth quarter on Hines' third touchdown. 38 yards on 13 carries. On a night when heavy rain turned Tony McKenna Field into a Woodstock-like mosh pit, Charlotte running back Mance Spikes got behind his self-appointed "Hogs" and sloshed for 127 yards and two TDs on 22 carries as the Tarpons beat a Lee County team for the 22nd time in the last 23 tries.

"I never had any doubts," Spikes said. He then turned the interview over to his main "Hog" tackle Todd Pierce, who paved the way for 162 rushing yards on 33 carries. "They had some weird fronts at first," Pierce said. "We had a talk about it at the half. We just got pumped up and went after it." ByRICK WEBER News-Press staff writer Mariner High School quarterback Shannon Royal, caked in mud and the disappointment of defeat, trudged off the field with his jersey and shoulder pads at his side.

He couldn't get one thought out of his mind: It's over. The Tritons' 21-18 loss to Charlotte on Friday night in a District 5A-11 game did not mathematically eliminate them from the playoffs. Mariner (5-3, 3-2) can still make the postseason if it beats Bradenton Bay-shore and Charlotte (7-0-1, 4-0) loses to Sarasota and Port Charlotte. But that' doesn't appear likely. Royal was flushed with resignation.

"This was a playoff game right here," said Royal, who completed 18 of 42 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. "I don't like our chances right now." He had caustic words for one official as he walked off, then offered this: "I don't have any comments." Spencer was livid about their interpretation of the Tritons' onside kick after they pulled to within three points 21-18 on Royal's 6-yard TD pass to running back Earnest Graham and two-point conversion pass to Josh Davis with 42 seconds left. Kicker Fabio Munroe softly nudged a bouncer that, according to the officials, was touched by a Mariner player before it went the required 1 0 yards and was then recovered by Tom Dean near midf ield. "They took it away from us," Royal said. "We touched it beyond midfield, to me. You never know what could've happened." Then again, Mariner was undisciplined and got flagged 11 times for 125 yards in penalties.

And the Tritons never got their running game going with Graham, who went into the game as Lee County's leading rusher (935 yards) but managed just brother Melvin. Genton converted the two-point pass to Melvin Livermon. On the next series, Riverdale's Carl Smart streaked down the left sideline for a 62-yard touchdown pass from Genton. The 2-point pass attempt was incomplete, leaving the score at 25-22. And that is when the Indians went back to the ground attack, which got them 267 yards in the first half alone.

Although the Wildcats piled up 330 yards rushing and 128 passing, it was not enough to overcome an explosive Lely team. "Big plays for both teams," said Estero senior quarterback Anthony Henry who rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns and passed for 128 yards and two more TDs. "They had more big plays than we did. That's how they took the game," Down by one point with less than two minutes remaining, Henry converted a third down with an 11-yard pass to junior running back John Hodges. But a big hit by senior defensive back Cedric Griffin caused Hodges to fumble at the Lely 40.
