Bubka, who holds the indoor mark of 20-1, said he was tired and felt some pain in his left leg during wampups before competition. Almost five hours later on his final attempt, however, the 28-year-old Soviet soared 20-V, topping his outdoor mark of 19-11 set in Formia, Italy, July 8. "It was so difficult jumping early in the competition," said Bubka, BUBKA who made his first two heights at 18-8 and 19-2. "The atmosphere was great.

The fans helped me. They gave me power. I felt very fast and very strong." Conoly, a Parade All-American offensive lineman, underwent reconstructive kSee surgery at a Tallahassee hospital and is lost for the season.

Conoly hurt the knee during a running drill iruSaturday's practice. At 6-foot-6, 341 pounds, Conoly was the biggest Florida State player ever signed.
