The program, "Operation Open Arms," will feature visits by entertainment and sports celebrities to military and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals nationwide. "The Gulf War has had a tremendous effect on the American public's awareness of this country's veterans. Operations Open Arms shows an appreciation to hospitalized veterans of all eras," said USO President Chapman B. Cox.

"Every organization and individual approached by the USO or the DAV has responded positively. Like so many Americans, the entertainment community is seeking ways to support our military men and women, regardless of personal or political views." Operation Open Arms marks the USO's return to providing service to hospitalized veterans on a national basis. The USO suspended its VA Hospital Visitation Program in 1982. Waves National has founded the Navy Women Foundation, a non-profit corporation. The Department of the Navy has donated a parcel of land adjacent to the USO building at the main gate of the Naval Training Center, Orlando, on which to build the museum. Waves National Florida units are now in the process of starting a fund-raising campaign for this museum. For more information, call 574-0807. City parks program FORT MYERS The Fort Myers Recreation Department is offering a free summer playground program for children ages 6 to 12. This half-day program will run from June 17 to Aug. 23. It will be held a.m.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Lions Park, off Cleveland Avenue, and the same times Tuesdays and Thursdays at Jefferson Park, Jefferson and Princeton. The camp will also be offered 1-4 p.m. weekdays at Freemont Park, on Freemont Street and Royal Sun Avenue, east of Fort Myers. The schedule includes arts and crafts, games, nature projects and organized playground activities. There is no fee for this program, but registration by a parent is necessary.

Bloodmobile to visit NORTH FORT MYERS The Edison Regional Blood Center is giving you two chances to donate blood. The center's "Wheels For Life" mobile unit is scheduled to make two stops in the North Fort Myers area. "Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 100 pounds or more," said director of public relations Betty Nelson.

The first stop is at Publix noon-2 p.m. Saturday at 13761 N. Cleveland North Fort Myers. The second collection site Is 3-4 p.m. the same day at Bob Evans Restaurant, 13251 N.Cleveland Ave.

The blood center is a non-profit, full service center providing safe, processed blood and blood products to three kidney dialysis centers and seven area hospitals. For more information, call 936-8727. Golf balls on display SANIBEL The main display case at the Sanibel Public Library is holding golf balls from around the world. The collection is that of Paul Cornelius, an avid golfer. He's been collecting golf balls from around the world for five years.

He has almost 5,000 balls on display. "He acquires between 5 to 10 balls a day through trading with fellow golfers," according to a news release. He has collected golf balls with logos from clubs, tournaments, resorts, events, colleges and universities. He also has logos from businesses, manufacturers and some with humorous sayings. The library is at 2401 Library Way, Sanibel.

The hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday hours are 10a.m.-3p.m. Call 472-2483.

Airman David D. Martin completed the munitions systems specialist course at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver. He Is the son of Thomas E. Martin of North Fort Myers.
