Wheelers of the Class A South Atlantic League. The Wheelers are part of the Cincinnati Reds farm system.

Erhardt graduated from Cape Coral High in 1985, played at South-western Louisiana University in La-; fayette, and Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas. The New York Yankees selected Erhardt on the 16th roundof the 1988 free agent draflHis Yankee minor-league career began slowly. "I just feel as long as I'm playing somewhere and people are looking at you, you got a chance," Erhardt said. "I'm one of those guys who will have to hang on and hang on." Erhardt, who played in five of Charleston's first 11 games, was hitting .294 with a homer and five RBI for the Wheelers.The Wheelers lead the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. The Yankees wanted to convert Erhardt, a first baseman and third baseman, into a catcher.

He didn't want to catch. On top of that, Erhardt believed he wasn't getting enough playing time. Last year he asked for his release. The Yankees gave it to him following the season. "I was really lost in the shuffle," Erhardt said from a hotel room in Fayetteville, N.C.

Erhardt's 1990 season was split between the Fort Lauderdale Yankees of the Florida State League and the Prince William Cannons of the Carolina League. In 43 games at Prince William, Erhardt hit .21 0 with two homers and 12 RBI.
