The Red Zone plague carried over for Northeast Louisiana in 1990. The Indians threatened all evening, but failed to convert scores in a disappointing 23-18 season-opening loss to Arkansas State. The Indians (0-1) play host to defending NCAA Division II national champion Mississippi College next Saturday at 7 p.m. Arkansas State (1-1) plays at Wyoming. NLU's inability to convert scoring opportunities from inside the opponent's 20-yard line haunted Coach Dave Roberts last season.

Roberts thought he had solved the problem last winter when he recruited a bevy of burly linemen and running backs. However, the Red Zone still proved fruitless for NLU when it really mattered Saturday night On the Indians' two touchdowns, one came after ASU had fumbled a punt away at the 1-yardline and the other touchdown came in the final minute in a catchup situation. The Indians produced only six points two Rob Tallent field goals on five other drives inside the ASU 30. Two of the drives ended in misses by Tallent from 43 and 30 yards. Another ended in an interception.

Trailing 6-0, Arkansas State took a 7-6 lead on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Roy Johnson to Ken dricke Bullard with 2:28 to play in the third quarter. On its next drive, NLU drove to the ASU 13, but Tallent's 30-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right The Indians eventually grabbed a 12-7 lead when ASU's Chris Collier fumbled a punt at his 1-yard line. NLU's Chandler Tatum made the hit that forced the ball free and Terra nee Quarles recovered. Bobby Van Buren scored on the next play, but Doug Pederson's attempted conversion pass was incomplete for a 1.2-7 lead. Arkansas State took the lead for good on its next possession by marching 64 yards in nine plays.

Collier took a pitch from Johnson around left end and ran the final 27 yards for the score. Johnson's two-point conversion pass failed and ASU led 13-12 with 6:56 left in the game. After Arkansas State's Ryan Jose added a 24-yard field goal for a 16-12 lead at 3 09, NLU threatened once more. Pederson whipped three straight completions to move to the ASU 29, but a third down pass to Bryant Broady was deflected into the hands of Derrick Toney who return the interception 73 yards down the left sideline for the game-clinching score at 1:43. NLU's ball-control offense dominated a lackluster first half as the visitors took a 6-0 lead.

The Indians put together time-consuming drives on their first two possessions, but had to settle for two field goals. Pederson completed four of six passes to four different receivers as NLU plowed from its 20 to the ASU 36. A clipping penalty stalled the drive and Talient drilled a career-best 46-yard field goal with 9 07 left in the first quarter. On NLU's second drive of the game, Pederson completed all five passes to set up a 23-yard field goal by Tallent with 128 left in the first quarter. NLU had a first down at the ASU 11, but two runs and short pass only gained five yard.

Tulane HOUSTON (AP) Deron Smith threw two touchdowns Saturday and a tenacious Tulane defense forced four turnovers, including two interceptions in the fourth quarter, as the Green Wave defeated Rice 21-10. Smith's second scoring pass, a 17-yard loss to flanker Steve Ballard on the first play of the final quarter, broke open a tight game marked by long Tulane drives and Rice possessions thwarted by turnovers and penalties. Smith completed 19 of 30 passes for 221 yards, plus another 23 yards rushing on six carries. Fullback Chance Miller chipped in with 96 yards on 22 carries as both teams evened their records at 1-1. Rice scored first as quarterback bonald Hollas avoided a big mh and found wide receiver Louis Southern holds off Ala.

State BATON ROUGE Southern University's Douglas Craft blocked a 28-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds to play and the Jaguars defeated Alabama State 7-6 Saturday night. Alabama State started its final series at its own 20 with 2:25 to go. The Hornets, behind key Ricky Jones pass completions of 19 yards to Eric Matthews, 13 yards to Reggie Brown and 14 yards to Anthony Lewis, drove to Southern's 10. But on fourth-and-1, Craft broke through and blocked Jason Thomson's attempt. The host Jaguars, under former Green Oaks coach Gerald Kimble, improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SWAC, while Alabama State fell to 0-1-1 and 0-1.

It was Southern's ninth consecutive victory over ASU. The game was played at A.W. Mumford Stadium before a crowd of 14,579 in Southern's home opener. Southern scored on its first possession and drove to the ASU 1-yard line on its next series before fumbling. Fullback Billy Sims, a former Northwood High standout, scored on a four-yard run with 12:56 left in the first quarter, capping a 30-yard drive.

A Hornet fumble on the kick-off set up the TD. Milowe Kleinpeter kicked the extra point attempt that proved to be the difference. Top-ranked Miami toppled by BYU Tha AMOciatad Prast PROVO, Utah Ty Detmer passed for 406 yards and three touchdowns as 16th-ranked Brigham Young shocked defending national champion Miami 23-21 Saturday night, only the third Hurricane loss in the last 55 regular-season games. Detmer outdueled Miami quarterback Craig Erickson in what was billed as a battle of Heisman Trophy favorites The lanky junior picked apart top-ranked Miami's feared defense with short, pinpoint passes, completing 38 of 54 throws, including a 7-yard TD toss to Mike Salido and 2-point conversion pass to Andy Boyce that gave BYU (2-0) a 28-21 lead late in the third quarter. Miami drove into BYU territory twice late in the fourth quarter, but both were halted by Cougars cor-nerback Ervin Lee.

Lee intercepted a pass in the end zone with 6:28 left, and knocked away another Erickson pass on the BYU goal line with 149 remaining in the game. Erickson, who led Miami to the national title in his first year as a starter, completed 28 of 52 for 299 yards without a touchdown. Detmer's 406 passing yards were the most against Miami since Doug Flutie of Boston College threw for 472 yards against the Hurricanes in 1984. It was the opening game of the season for Miami, which defeated BYU 41-17 in the only previous meeting of the teams, in 19S8. BYU opened its season last week with a 30-10 victory over Texas-El Paso.

Late field goal spells doom for Demons Continued from Page 1C EIU drove to the NSU 20 on the first possession of the second half, but Davis again came to the rescue, recovering a Jamie Jones fumble oa the 21. The Demons again took advantage of the turnover as Roach wea ved 22 yards for a touchdown on an option keeper nine plays later. Hamler missed the PAT kick, though, leaving NSU a 16-14 leader with 811 left in the third period. The Demons also scored on their next possession as Roach made a pitch as he was being tackled to Deon Ridgell, who took it 14 yards around the right side for a touchdown Hamler'skick was blocked by Jeff Mile9, however, leaving the Demons ahead 22-14. The Panthers jumped right back into the game, though as Tim Lance, the upback.

Mansfield's Marcus Corter caught Sol Graves' first pass of the game and also had the honors of scoring the first touchdown of the season.

Linebacker RoovelroeSwan (Green Oaks) was involved in several plays pressuring the quarterback. Fullback Sammy Seamster (Minden) started and helped lead the way for Harvey Williams. RED CROSS REPORT: Georgia's Arthur Marshall suffered an apparent broken leg when he was tackled after a pass reception at LSU's 7-yard-line. Georgia's only touchdown came on an 18-yard drive. The Tiger defense also set up a field goal on Rafael Adams' interception deep in Georgia territory. But there was also a flip side. The bad: LSU failed to convert on either extra-point attempt after its two touchdowns.

Pedro Suarez' first attempt was blocked. Suarez never made a second attempt. Kevin Mawae's snap was low and holder Jesse Daigle was stopped short of the end zone on his run attempt. The Tigers also helped Georgia to its only touchdown. On a punt attempt, center Mike Marix's snap sailed over punter Brian Griffith's bead.

Griffith fielded the snap on one knee at the Tigers' 18-yard line giving Georgia possession. But the Tigers were able to overcome the bad. They did it with Sol Graves passing 15 yards to Todd Kinchen for a touchdown early in the third quarter. The score gave LSU a 1210 lead. Later, LSU would add field goals of 38 and 31 yards from Suarez to build an 18-10 lead.

But Georgia would not go quietly. The Bulldogs cut LSU's lead to 18-11 on John Kasay's 41-yard field goal. Earlier in the drive, the Bulldogs had been faced with a first-and-30 situation after penalties. But Georgia was able to convert LSU, though, stopped the drive at the Tigers' 21-yard line. Tailback Harvey Williams, after two seasons of basic Inactivity, rushed for 131 vards on 24 carries. His most important runs came in the final second's when he carried three times for 24 vards to gain a critical first down. His only miscue was a fumble In the end zone that stalled a scoring drive.

Close seconds were auorterback Sol Graves, who threw for 97 vards and two TOs in his first start, and receiver Todd Kinchen, six recpe-tions for 100 yards. KEY PLAYS: Give this to the LSU defense which blanketed the Georgia receivers on a fourth-and-five play at left in the game, forcing quarterback Greg Tallev to overthrow Andre Hastings. It was Georgia's tost chance. A plav earlier, on third-ond three, linebacker Mike Hewitt tackled Bulldog tailback Garrison Hearst for a two-vard loss. WORTH NOTING: Georgia coaches learned Friday ofternoon that three defensive linemen would not play In the game because their ocademic eligibility hod not vet been determined.

Two of the plovers defensive tackles Casey Barnvm and Getrge Brewer were starters. Backup note guard Curt Douglas was the third plover who remained Athens, Ga. NOTHING SPECIAL: Even LSU Coach Mike Archer went to great lengths in order to correct the errors in the Tigers' kicking game, the results were not immediate. LSU twice fouled up extra points the first was blocked and holder Jesse Daigle fmbled the snap on the second. An even bigger gaffe was a bad snap on a punt that set up Georgia touchdown late in the first hoif.

LSU oso was penaliied for Interfering with foir catch on a punt. On the ether hand. Pear Suarez' two field goals extnded LSU's consecutive field goal string to 18. FLAG DAY: Both coaches expected some problems with penalties against their young teams, but this was ridiculous. LSU was flagged 12 times for 121 yards.

Tulone's Harold Dennis soils yard line, Georgia drove to the Tigers' 25. The Bulldogs were faced with fourth-and-five and only 2:30 left to play. But Greg Talley's pass to Andre Hastings was incomplete. While it was the defense that saved LSU late, it was the offense that got the Tigers started early. LSU took its first possession and went 80 yards.

The Tigers got the touchdown when Graves passed 10 yards to Mansfield's Marcus Carter for a 6-0 lead. Georgia, though, took a 10-6 advantage at the half. The Bulldogs used a 24-yard field goal from Kasay and a 4-yard touchdown pass from Preston Jones to Sean Humming. The touchdown was set up by the bad snap on the punt. SOUTHERN METHODIST 44, VANDERBILT 7 In Dallas, Mike Romo threw a school-record six touchdown passes and moved ahead of Don Meredith on Southern Methodist's all-time yardage list as the Mustangs (1-0) outgunned the Vanderbilt in the teams' first meeting in 53 years.

It was Vanderbilt 's worst opening loss in the 101 years the school has played football. The previous worst loss was 42-7 to Mississippi State last year. Romo completed 31 of 41 passes for 342 yards. He's only the third quarterback in Southwest Conference history to pass for six touchdowns in a game. Houston's Andre Ware has the record with seven against Temple last year.
