Toni The front four will be made up of Al Dotson, Jim Kanicki, Willie Parker and Don Brumm who combine 34 years experience in the pros. Tuesday afternoon, Shreveport banker Bill Benard was granted the franchise for the Steamer for 1975. Benard, president of American Bank and Trust said stock in the club would be sold to the general public to assure the purchase and operation of the club here next Radio KWKH will air all of the Steamer games with the opening starting at 7:15 tonight. James Lynn will handle play-by-play and Larry King color on the games. Special negotiations were completed with the Houston Astros so that KWKH could carry tonight's opener.

Due to an Astros Baseball broadcast conflict next week, the second Steamer game will be broadcast on KROK with others on KWKH. The name "Steamer" for the local club was chosen from nearly 50,000 entries in a "name the team" contest. Nearly 1,000 persons suggested the name "Steamer" and Thomas A. Beckett of Bossier jCity was selected as winner of the behind Jim Brown Jim Taylor Joe Perry Leroy Kelly John Henry Johnson Don Perkins (6,217) and Ken Willard (6,022) on the all-time rushing list. Tonight the Steamer will start Nance and Warren McVea, a five-year pro vet, at runningbacks with Rick Eber at wide receiver.

D. C. Nobles, the Houston University rookie, will get the starting quarterback nod tonight. David Mays, a rookie from Texas Southern, will be the No. 2 quarterback.

Last week in a 42-14 loss to Birmingham, the Shreveport secondary was ripped in the second half by the passing of George Mira. Taylor felt that the rush of the front four on defense had diminished in the second half, simply because they had played without substitution, and the result was too much pressure on the secondary. The addition of Rich Glover to the corps of down linemen should help. Glover, former Outland Trophy winner, will be playing his first game for the Steamer. beat the local team so badly earlier in the season is that John Huarte, the Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame, will not be at the controls of the Southmen.

Instead, Danny White, formerly of Arizona State and the first quarterback drafted in the NFL last season, will man the quarterback slot. Huarte is out with a pulled calf muscle and backing White is Jim Ettinger of Kansas, brother of Memphis (and Arkansas) wide receiver Jack Ettinger. White came in during a 25-7 victory over Chicago last Wednesday in place of Huarte and fired a 56-yard bomb to set up a score which he produced later with a seven-yard strike. White has been the more accuarte passer in a comparison with Huarte (51.0 to 50.5 per cent). Ettinger has thrown only 11 times.

But it is on the ground that the Southmen are awesome. J.J. Jennings of Rutgers leads the club and the WFL with 879 yards and a 4.8 average. John Harvey, a backup runningback, has a 5.3 average and 697 yards on the ground. By Gerry Robichaux Times Assistant Sports Editor It's a whole new ball game for the Shreveport Steamer which opens World Football League warfare here tonight but unfortunately it's the same old Memphis Southmen invading State Fair Stadium.

Kickoff time for the city's first ever regular season pro game is 7:30 p.m. and advanced ticket sales were quoted at 15,000 to 17,000 yesterday bya club spokesman. "It's difficult to tell what has been sold because of the number of outlets we have," he said. One estimate is that the crowd could go as high as 30,000 for the battle between the Steamer (3-8-1 at Houston) and Memphis (10-2). Despite his club's lopsided victory in a game at Memphis (45-0), coach John McVay said last night when asked to comment on the second time around "I've been sucked into that trap before.

"Look at what this team (Houston) did against New York earlier. They were beaten badly (43-10) the first time and Starter Willie Spencer has 486 yards and a 4.0 average. Spencer, who never attended college, has drawn interest from NFL clubs because of his play in the league. The 6-4, 225-pound runner was originally signed to a one-year Southmen pact. When others began showing interest, the Southmen quickly signed him to a three-year contract.

Memphis is the highest scoring team in the league (31.5 per. game) and the old Texans were the lowest (9.4). The Southmen are also tops in total offense (363 yards a game) and the old Texans lowest (216). In rushing statistics, Memphis has a league tops of 195 yards per game rushing offense. Shreveport's counterpart in Texas had ninth place in the 12-team standings at 123 yards per game.

Shreveport's rushing attack has been built around Nance who has 540 yards for the season and is just 32 yards short of becoming the eighth player to gain over 6,000 yards as a professional. The 240-pound Syracuse "exe" ranks then came back to win the second game (14-11). "You can bet we've definitely discussed the fact that this is a new life for this team," McVay said. "We know moving to a new town where they're welcome will make this (Shreveport) a lot better club," said McVay. McVay recalled the first clash between the two teams was a "heavy hitting game" and he remembered that Jim "Bo" Nance had run well against the Southmen early in the first contest.

Coach Marshall Taylor of Shreveport, entering his first game as the club's head coach, agreed on the fact that the change in location from Houston to Shreveport seems to be a plus factor for his team. But he also recalled that Memphis is among the toughest clubs in the WFL. "They come off the line and mash people for 4-5 yards and then that sets up a 12-15 yard gain," he said of Memphis. "They don't make many mistakes and have very few weak spots. They execute everything well," said Taylor.

Tiant, 21-13, who hadn't won a game since recording his 20th victory on Aug. 23, allowed a triple to Jim Mason, doubles to Graig Nettles and Mason, two singles to Chris Chambliss and one to Sandy Alomar.

But the Yankees could not manage more than one hit in any inning. He struck out 6ix, including three in the eighth and one in the ninth. Boston's ace, given poor offensive support since his last victory, had an early lead to work with Tuesday when the Red Sox scored three runs in the third off loser Rudy May, 7-5. May walked two batters before Juan Beniquez singled home Boston's first run with two out. Carl Yastrzemski then tripled home the final two runs of the inning as his base hit took a bad hop over Bobby Murcer in right field and rolled to the fence.

The Red Sox added a run in the fifth when Tommy Harper scored from third on first baseman Chambliss' error. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Yankees. Astros-Reds CINCINNATI (UPI) -Johnny Bench tripled home Joe Morgan and then scored on a passed ball during a three-run fifth inning Tuesday night that carried the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-1 triumph over the Houston Astros. 9:30 m. NEW YORK (AP) The New York Stars of the World Football League will be moved to Charlotte, N. it was learned Tuesday night. The Stars, troubled by sagging attendance and draining the financial resources of owner Robert Schmertz, have announced a "major press conference" scheduled for 9 a.m.,CDT, Wednesday. The conference, a source confirmed, would announce the shift of the team to the southern city which for months had been negotiating a possible transfer of the similarly troubled Detroit Wheels.

Bill Mclntyre Looks Over the 'Enemy9 at Fair Grounds White Will Get His Kicks as Starter for Memphis Southmen 1 MCVAY All things considered, with emphasis on their schizophrenic existence, the Memphis Southmen have done fairly well through the first dozen weeks of the World Football League. Born as the Toronto Northmen in Canada, and half the time still called the Grizzlies by the press in Memphis, the guys in Burnt Orange and Old Gold tonight will help initiate the Shreveport iSteamerintotheWFL. The Southmen, or Grizzlies, will come in as distinct favorites off an earlier 45-0 whitewash back on Sept 6th. But, says John Huarte, first-string quarterback for the Tennesseeaas. there won't be any 45-0 blankings aeainst the Steamer.

"Things more or less fell in line in that first game," said John late Tuesday as his teammates went through a workout at State Fair Stadium 'i dnn't see us repeating by the same sort of a score but I expect we're going to win tomorrow night!" Huarte, though, won't be a part of this ball game. He was watching the workout from an isolated bench, wearing a dress shirt opened at the collar, and dark slacks. When he went out to midfield for the post-workout meeting, John limped noticeably because of the pulled calf muscle in his right leg an aftermath of last week's 25-7 win over the Chicago Fire. No 45-point difference this time in Shreveport, insisted this ten-year professional who had won the Heisman Trophy in 1964 while at Notre Dame "For one thing, Shreveport has a lot of players with a lot of price," said John "For another, they've got some smart defensive backs. If you check the last HUARTE receptions for 738 yards a 19.4 average and is also second in scoring with 90 points including 12 TDs.

"I'm from Cameron State in Lawton, pointed out Marshall. "That's now Cameron University, you know. We've gone bigtime." Marshall caught two scoring passes from White, one for 56 yards on a bomb, last week against the Fire. Wallace and Harvey also caught first half touchdowns throws from Huarte. "Jennings," said McVay, who played under coaches Woody Hayes and Ara Parseghian at Miami of Ohio, "outdid himself.

He was ill and had a 102 degree fever." The Grizzlies' defense has permitted just two touchdowns in their last three games Standouts include 227-pound end Cecil Pryor, out of Michigan; 225-pound middle linebacker Bob Lally out- of Cornell; cornerbacks David Thomas, rookie out of Texas Southern and "Sonny" Hicks from North Carolina and safeties Seth Miller and Dick Thornton. Thomas leads the league in thefts with seven. Miller picked off a Virgil Carter goal-line interception at a crucial moment against the Fire. "In my ten years in pro ball." says Huarte, "I haven't seen a back who can run better than Harvey." James J. Jennings, the nation's leading scorer at as the fullback smashing between the tackles and Tyler Junior College product John Harvey alternating at tailback with 225-pound free agent Willie Spencer.

Jennings leads the league in rushing with 879 yards on 184 carries; Harvey is fourth in running with 697 yards on 132 charges; and Spencer is seventh in scoring with 60 points and 8 TDs. "The biggest advantage," Huarte said of the Straight-I, "'is that it allows the backs to hit the holes quicker. Second, it gives the offensive backs better visibility. Thirdly, there's better momentum hitting the holes." This is why Jennings' rushes have carried the Southmen to a 10-2-0 just one garne behind the Birmingham Americans in the Central Division. "The disadvantage," candidly added John, "is that the backs can not get into pass patterns quickly." So the Grizzles throw mostly to flanker Edward Marshall and rookie wide receiver Roger Wallace from Bowling Green of Ohio Marshall, for two years a taxi squadder with the Cincinnati Bengals, and recommended to McVay by line coach Jay Fry, who had Ed at Ottawa in the Candian League, is the league's second leading pssatcher with 38 game film, some of their defensive backs came within an eyelash of interceptions." Coach John McVay, football bossman at University of Davton from 1965-72, and athletic director in 73, will start tonight with Danny White, a rookie out of Arizona State and the first quarterback drafted by the National Football League Dallas' Cowboys went for Danny, son of Wilford "Whizzer" White, a Chicago Bear from 1950 55, but be chose to sign with Toronto and wound up with the club in Memphis Along with filling in for Huarte the league's fifth leading passer with 108 of 214 completions for 1,677 yards and 19i TDs White also is the leading punter in tne He nas kicked 46 times for a 42 5-yard average.

When was the last time a starting quarterback other than Oiler Dan Pastorini also handled punting for a pro club? Not since Sammy Baugh and Bob Waterfield, right? "Danny will still do the punting," said McVay "With a 37-man roster you have to utilize your personnel to the best advantage of the ball club Huarte just smiled, and footnoted, "How often do you see a punter get hurt?" McVay, who described State Fair Stadium facilities as "excellent, good, there's a nice crown on the field," goes with the formation with 220-pound White's backup quarterback tonight will be Jim Ettinger, a four-year pro out of Kansas, and brother of former Arkansas' receiver Jack. A pulled hamstring ill idle Jack. McVay later talked of his Southmen: "The grizzly emblem mascot was adopted when the team was still in Canada Because the move happened so suddenly, we didn't have time to establish a new name. Northmen just became Southmen." Added John, "Shreveport has good personnel Our players have great respect for them So much for scores like 45-0. And having won 10 of 12 games, Huarte a backup with the Jets, Pats, Eagles, Chiefs and Bears said simply of his joining the WFL: "It's been a lot of fun:" But not so funny for the Steamer, now 3-8-1.
