His early life was spent on a hill farm near Tannehill, but as the depression deepened, the Long family moved to Pineville and Gillis attended Bolton High School in Alexandria, working in a grocery store after school. Encouraged by his parents, Gillis used determination and unbounded energy as a substitute for money and entered Louisiana State University in the fall of 1939.

He quickly gained recognition both in and out of the classroom for his warm, friendly spirit, and intelligent, mature thinking. After an active career in the Army during the second World War, in which he distinguished himself in combat, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, he served at the Nazi war crimes trials in Nuremberg. Returning to L.S.U. he received his B.A. in 1949 and his law degree in 1951.

Gillis served in Washington after completing law school as Legal Counsel to the Senate Small Business Committee. On four separate occasions Gillis served as Chief Counsel to special committees of the U. S. House of Representatives. In addition to service with congressional committees, Gillis Long has had an extensive private practice in business law.

He has a broad understanding of the needs of business and conditions that favor industrial growth. Elected to Congress for the 8th district of Louisiana in 1962, Gillis was chosen assistant Democratic Whip by his colleagues from Mississippi and Louisiana, a signal honor for a new Representative, as was his election to the influential Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce.
