"To enter this line of work at this level is the chance of a lifetime," he said. "Coach. Collins and Northeast have shown great confidence in me and I am going to give them every ounce of effort I have to prove them right. As a quarterback, where you have to know what you're doing and what the other 21 players on the field are doing, too, I have been lucky enough to accumulate an abundance of football knowledge and I am excited about sharing that knowledge with the Northeast quarterbacks." Lane, 27, comes from a football background. His father, Ralph, was an assistant at Northeast in the 1960 and an older, brother, Cliff, played at LSU.

"I can't think of anyone who can relate to quarterbacks, who can share his experiences or who can help develop young quarterbacks any better than Bob Lane," Collins said. "With Bob Lane coaching the quarterbacks and Roger Carr coaching the receivers, there's no question in my mind that we can develop a tremendous passing game." Collins said that Lane would call the offensive plays from the press box. "Our offensive game plans will be formulated by all of our offensive coaches under the direction of Coach Ragan but Bob will call the plays," he said.

Compti. LP IOWA CITY. Iowa (AP) After weeks of contending his Iowa basketball team wasn't as good as everyone was saying, first-year coach Tom Davis said Tuesday the Hawkeyes may deserve to be the top-ranked team in the country. The lofty ranking came after Iowa rallied to beat Illinois on the road last week and hours before defeating fifth-ranked Purdue 70-67 at West Lafeyette, Ind. Monday night "I think we're deserving of pretty high consideration just because we've won," Davis said Tuesday when asked about earlier statements his team didn't merit its high rankings.

"I was basing it on how we were playing. I just didn't think we were playing as well as you should be playing to be one of the top five or 10 teams in the country. "And yet we continue to improve. And we continue to win." Iowa went to work Tuesday in hopes of keeping the nation's and school's longest winning streak alive in Thursday night's Big Ten Conference showdown at home against third-ranked Indiana. Davis said playing through adversity has been more a matter of surviving than thriving for his team this season.

Guard Michael Reaves injured his knee and center Gerry Wright broke his shooting hand before the season started. Both have healed but neither has worked back into the starting lineup. Iowa rallied from 22 points down against Illinois last week and then defeated the Boilermakers without sophomore standout Roy Marble, who was sidelined with an eye injury. "Really, when you get into these situations, you just try to survive them," Davis said. "I don't know that you look upon them as an exciting challenge.

You just1 try to survive. "You just try to something a little bit better than you're doing, he said. "I think the caliber of play around the league is that you're going to get down. Opponents are really going to put you at disadvantages throughout the league." The challenges of preserving an unbeaten conference record and the No. 1 ranking won't change the way Iowa prepares, Davis said.

"I think we just try to be the same we've been all along and not do anything differently," Davis said. Iowa's players got a brief break Tuesday. The team usually practices at 1 p.m. but Davis did not make the players show up until 2 p.m. Iowa disposed of Northwestern and Wisconsin at home to start the Big Ten season before going on the road to down Minnesota 78-57, Illinois 91-88 in overtime and Purdue.

"When you get those road wins in the league, there's not much you can say except to accept any ranking we're given right now and just appreciate it" "I think it is very meaningful to the players. I think they feel appreciated when they're ranked high. It means a lot to them that for the first time Iowa is ranked No. 1 in the country." wiWV ppsaiohs '-llrpr irn meniolely. will troin tAr.
