SFA showed its defensive strength right off the bat, Northwestern's Greg Jackson pounced on a Tyler fumble on the Lumberjacks' 23 on the first play of the game, but SFA held on. The Demons ended up on the Axmen's 27 where Foret's 45-yard field goal attempt was no good The Texans then rolled 80 yards on 11 plays for the game's first score which came on a 27-yard Mayer toss to Lytle in the end zone Lewis' first PAT kick made it 7-0 SFA with 8:15 left in the opening quarters A promising NSU drive ended on the SFA 20 when Jones recovered a Cage pitchout.

The Lumberjacks promptly mounted another drive, but the Demons got out of trouble this time when Maggio intercepted a Mayer pass that richocheted out of the hands of Lytle in the end zone He legged it back to the SFA 19. Midway of the second period Lewis missed on field goal attempts of 41 and 36 (after a penalty against the Demons) before the Loggers got another TD drive cranked up. Starting on their 45 after a NSU punt, Mayer led the 'Jacks down in eight plays with a 31-yard pickup by Bergeron on a pitchout the big gainer. Reece blasted over tackle from two yards out and Iewis kicked it out to 14-0 with 1:08 remaining to play. NSU, behind the sharp passing of Ballard, moved from its 20 down to the SFA nine before time caught the Demons.

SFA held a 225-128 total offense edge at halftime. The Demons came out throwing again in the second half. Ballard mixed completions to Gene Knecht and Bo McCol lister with draws to Thornton in a drive that got a big boost when the Axmen were nailed for pass interference to give NSU a first and goal at the one. Cage smashed over on the next play and Foret's kick narrowed the SFA lead to 14-7 with 11:21 remaining in the third chapter. SFA stopped another NSU drive on its own 25 later in the period.

The Lumbermen got NSU in a hole as the period ended when Steve Cannon punted dead on the Demon three. SFA stiffened and held again early in the final frame on its own 11, but the next time the' Demons were not to be denied. Jackson was again the man of the hour as he recovered a Tyler fumble on the SFA 45. Rolls On Tech tackle Fred Dean caused the first fumble that was recovered by nose guard Rod Bagley and end Eddie Anglin's hit brought about the second which was pounced on by end Craig Springmeyer. After that early setback, UTA cut the game to 14-7 on the first play of the second period but Tech's offense came alive again behind four straight pass completions by QB Steve Haynes just before intermission for a 20-6 lead That Tech drive started with 3:44 left in the half and covered 84 yards in 10 plays before Moody scooted over THE YARDSTICK La.

UTA actually had a chance to jump back strongly into contention midway of the second period when, with Tech on top 14-0, the Mavericks' Tom Bowdish grabbed a Haynes pitchout behind the line at the Tech 32 and rambled down to the Bulldog nine before Haynes made the tackle. However, after the Bulldog defense stopped UTA cold on three straight downs sparked by linebacker Jerry Davis' tackle of Maverick QB George Cox for a four-yard loss cornerback Wenford Wilborn broke through to block a field goal attempt and preserve the Tech lead. After having trouble on the ground in their opener, the Bulldogs ran for 292 yards against UTA with McDaniel getting 87, Harper 57, Moody 43 and John Henry White 40.
