THE TIMES FOOTBALL IOC SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 1989 Johnson will only say Aikman, Walsh to get equal time has been impressive during practice sessions. Johnson said the running back will not harm his chances of making the team by not playing Sunday. "He has shown he has the talent to contribute," Johnson said. "A player such as that will get an opportunity at a later time." The Cowboys also made a roster move Friday, releasing free-agent kicker Massimo Manca. this week will be third-year man Ron Burton.

Veteran Jeff Rohrer and rookie Randy Shannon will also see action at the spot. The Cowboys will be without the services Sunday of free-agent running back Junior Tautalatasi, who suffered bruised ribs during practice this week and will not be able to play. Tautalatasi, who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Laufenberg will play the other two quarters. "We tried to make it fair as far as the reasoning behind who takes the first snap Sunday," Johnson said. "But we've structured it to give both Troy and Steve equal time in the first two games." Although Johnson would not name his starter at quarterback, he did fill in two of the other starters for Sunday.

Replacing injured Danny Noonan at right tackle will be free-agent Dan Sileo, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Backing up Sileo will be rookie draft pick Rhondy Weston and free agent Willie Broughton. Noonan has a groin injury that is not considered serious. Taking the spot left by veteran outside linebacker Garry Cobb who will be out the next month after having arthroscopic knee surgery The Associated Press THOUSAND OAKS, Calif Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson still has not announced his starting quarterback for today's first preseason game against San Diego. But Johnson said that rookies Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh will have ample opportunity to win the job.

Johnson said Friday that the quarterback who starts against San Diego will play the first half while the other two Cowboy quarterbacks including third-stringer Babe Laufenberg will split the final two quarters. The rotation will be switched around for the next game against the Los Angeles Raiders. That means Aikman and Walsh will each get a start and play three quarters during the first two games. -jgn Simms-less Giants nudge Pats NY-Tanner 15 pass from Mockev (Leahy kick). 13:04 NY 19 25-130 233 GB 19 32-94 222 0 31 First downs Rushes-yard Passing Return Yords Comp-Attlnt Socked-Yards LOSf Punts Fumbles-Lost Penalties-Yards Tune of Possession 21-34-2 18-234 3-14 3-17 445 4-35 II 754 29:23 3-3 3-20 30.37 The Associated Press FOXBORO, Mass.

A slimmer, trimmer, more health-conscious Mike Ditka is at the helm of the Chicago Bears this season, but the man known for his intensity has lost none of his fierce competitiveness a year after suffering a heart attack. Gone are the cigars, the excess poundage, the he-man eating habits and the devil-may-care attitude toward life. But two months shy of his 50th CM Del 11 21 guy," Ditka said with a coy smile. "I think he's getting smarter," linebacker Mike Singletary said. "In order for him to be around for a while, he's got to be smarter.

He's getting rest and eating better eating a lot more vegetables and a little less red meat. He's toning down, saying the things he needs to say, and keeping quiet about the rest." But Singletary says Ditka still talks tough to players who aren't measuring up. "You get out of line, you're going to know about it." Ditka has changed inwardly, too, says Bears pro scout Ken Geiger, who was with the coach when he was stricken. "Maybe inside, it did something to him that he thinks, 'Hey, we're not going to be here forever, we're just actors on a Geiger said. Ditka had just finished working out early on the morning of Nov.

2, 1988, when he suffered what doctors called a mild heart attack. He missed only one game before he was back in action, keeping the team in first place the entire season and finishing tied for the best record in the NFL at 12-4. Ditka never talks about the at- tack, Geiger said, but his actions speak louder than words. He's lost 25 pounds, and "looks great," Geiger said. "He works out I don't think as prodigiously as he did before." But Ditka goes at it every morning before practice, working the treadmill and weightlifting, running backs coach Johnny Roland said.

Sometimes he even takes part in the team workouts, stretching out on his back on the field and doing leg lifts with the rest of the guys. "He's not as volatile, he has a lot more control over himself," defensive tackle Dan Hampton said. "I don't think he lets things bother him as much as he once did." But Hampton said one thing does bother Ditka, having only one Super Bowl victory under his belt since joining the Bears in 1982. Ditka is especially bothered that the team came so close last year but never delivered, and that has fueled his drive to go to New Orleans this year for Super Bowl XXIV. "His intensity and the way he approaches the season is no different," linebacker coach Dave McGinnis said.

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Harold Jackson has been making special trips to Houston, Texas, to work with unsigned No. 1 pick, Hart Lee Dykes.

He has been keeping Dykes informed about the Patriots' system and doing some special coaching so that Dykes won't be so far behind if and when he signs. "I've never been involved with such a situation," Jackson said. "But I don't think we want to spite our nose. The more we can keep him informed of what we're doing, it'll be better for everyone when he comes in, and he eventually will come in." Some defensive players are grumbling because of lack of playing time in Cleveland. With the Browns switching to a 4-3 attack-style defense, nine-year veteran linebacker Eddie Johnson, and defensive end Charles Buchanan, who led the team in sacks last year with 4 Vt are being squeezed out.

Neither player saw any playing time in last week's exhibition game with the Philadelphia Eagles in London. "I'd say it's critical now. I was hoping he'd get this week in." Parcells has become grizzled over the rash of holdouts in recent years. Last season, he was incensed by the long holdouts of Carl Banks and Mark Bavaro. "You don't have to get in the face of a skunk three times to smell it," Parcells said.

"I must do things in a certain way. If I can alter my attitude toward something to help the team, I've got to do that. That may leave some dead bodies along the way, but think of how many I've saved." Said Giants general manager George Young about Simms, who makes about $800,000 a year and is asking for double that (the team reportedly is offering about $1.2 million in an extension), "Someone ought to remember he has a signed contract and is in violation of that contract." There are 16 NFL quarterbacks making 1 million or more. Simms is not one of them. Simms said he couldn't predict what effect his absence will have on his effectiveness "because I've always had the luxury of having a full training camp to get ready.

I feel great. I've been throwing the ball very well." By MARK CANNIZZARO Gannett News Service The feud between Philadelphia offensive lineman Ron Heller and Cleveland defensive end Bubba Baker took a new turn overseas last week. It began last year when Baker poked Heller in the eye because Heller was apparently chop blocking Baker. It continued before practice one day in London when Baker approached Heller and offered a kiss-and-make-up hand shake. Heller, however, shoved Baker's hand away in rejection.

Baker then suggested Heller meet him in the tunnel to finish their business. Heller refused. "The issue for me is over," Baker said. "He brought up a whole new one this week. He wrote the music to this tune this week, and I'm going to dance to it.

The nice guy part is over. I don't want to fight, but I'll tell you what, I'm not going to be pushed around, that's for sure." Heller's response? "I'll kill him if I get my hands on him," he said. "I'll stay out there and fight him until he's dead. Tell him I said that." Baker: "He couldn't kill me with a knife. He's just a punk." i He wrote the music to this tune this week, and I'm going to dance to it.

The nice guy part is over.) Bubba Baker on Browns' feud Perhaps it's fortunate that the Eagles and Browns don't play each other this year. New York Giants coach Bill Parcells has issued a stern warning to quarterback Phil Simms, who is holding out for a contract renegotiation. "I'm concerned," he said. "How could you not be concerned? He's not one of those guys who can come here in four days and be ready. He knows it, and I know it.

I don't think his agent may know it. In every other year he was in camp, he wanted to take every turn.
