Former Resident Is Opera Soprano I'HK BROWNSVILLE HEIIAI.D--Sinnlay, February 29, 1976--PACK 90 During tMO the Brownsville Cultural Arts Club granted their Outstanding Senior Girl from the Junior Club award to Diana Hoagland. During the following yean, as Diana pur- ued her singing career, their selection hat proved to have been most wisely granted, A coloratura soprano, Miss Hoagland first learned proper voice techniques from Mrs. O.A, Douglas who for many years gave private voice lessons in the community. Although Miss Hoagland's parents no longer live in Brownsville, they continue to inform Mrs. Douglas about Iheir daughter's progress as does the singer herself.

Following her graduation from Brownsville high school, Miss Hoagland attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where she was grants) her achelor of usic and Master of Music degrees. She then en- tinued her studies at the Juilliard School of Music In New York where her voice Instructor was Hans Heinz, During this time she also worked as a music specialist at the Willowbrook Slate School. In 1969 she won first place in the Metropolitan Opera competition in Atlanta, Georgia. It was during this same year thai she made her first solo appearance in New York with the A i a Symphony Orchestra unctcr the direction of Leopold StokowsXy in Carl Orff's "Carmlna Burana." During the past few years she has also performed works by Krause and Pergolesi and sang the rote of the countess In Mozart's "Marriage Of Figaro" with the New Opera Company of Boston. Boston Opera lovers became even more familiar with Miss Hoagland when she sang in "The Same Day Dawns" by Nicola and In "When Lilacs First in the Dooryard Bloomed" by Roger Sessions which were performed at the Sanders Theatre in that city.

Her career has also included the recording of "Lilly by Loon Kirchner for Columbia Records. During 1975 Miss Hoagland loured Kurope and auditioned for the Holland Opera Company where she was awarded a contract to stag in a Mozart opera during the Spring of this year. Her plans also include an tl audition for (he City Opera of ij New York sometime during the year. Years of hard work, long hours of practice and a dedication lo her art have brought the name Diana Hoagland lo the attention the opera lovers of the worldj Perhaps her achievements wilt give incentive to others hoping topursue a similar career. COLORATURA SOPRANO Diana Hoagland who recently signed a contract with the Holland Opera Company began her vocal training with local voice teacher Mrs.

O.A, Douglas. After graduating from high school she attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Backstage At Camilla By DOROTHY DO-LimE "Evening In Spain" opened last Monday to a packed house and has been playing to an almost capacity crowd each evening. The audiences were treated to a dazzling exhibition ot Flemenco dancing, guitar playing and singing. As an extra attraction a recitation of selected poems of Federico Garcia Lorca was narrated by our resident director, Roberto Elizondo.

We would like to thank all or those people who helped with the show especially Mike Stowe, John Grunthaner, Dorothy Grunthaner, Jo Burned and Manny Garcia. These people were never seen on stage but without their assistance the show could not ha ve go ne on. Today will be the last chance (o see this magnificent show so it you haven't yet had the opportunity, may we urge you to attend Ihis afternoon's performance. Curtain time will be at 2:30. Last week casting was completed for the comedy "6 RMS RIV VU" with parts going to Wiley Kuna, Joan McNeil, Andy Monson, Becky Digram, David Penque, Audrey Grunthaner, Dorothy Grunthaner and Rob Taylor.

The director will be assisted by Kuhler. Rumors have been (lying about which musical will be chosen to replace "Of Thee I Sing." At last we are at liberty to lell you that the ever popular "Oklahoma!" will be presented by Camille Players. The casting for this fascinating show will take place sometime during March, with the show tentatively scheduled for late Muscular Dystrophy Art Show Over Texas artists and craftsmen will join forces with the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy, for the second annual "Display for Dystrophy" art show and sale. The festivilits will be held on the grounds of the Rancho Vlejo Country Club, Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21st. The event will begin with an Invitational Champagne party, art sale and auction Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.

The proceeds from the party and auction will help the Rio Grande Valley Chapter provide vital patient services such as wheel chairs, braces, lifts, hospital beds, out-patient clinic care and recreational programs for the victims of muscular dystrophy. artist that will be exhibiting has donated one or more of their wwks lo this auction. Some of the auction pieces tre currently on display at Pan American Bank, and Rancho Vlejc. Sunday the art show will be open from 11:00 a.m. to p.m.
