Shunna Robinson, a 6-foot-2 center from Southern Arkansas University at Pine Bluff, and Leola Shaw, a 6-foot power forward from Hinds (Miss.) Community College, have signed with Northwestern, Smith said Wednesday. Shaw scored 19.4 points and averaged 10.8 rebounds while earning several honors, including spots on the junior college All-Region 23 and All-South teams. How slow 1 will they go? That was the most question heading into time trials today for the Winston 500. Freshman left-hander Paul Paramo (3-2) scattered 1 0 hits and struck out 1 1 over 7 innings for the victory. Lee Hanta (7-3) took the loss. "Texas-Arlington jumped ahead on us and it was just tough to come back from that," Tech Coach Pat Patterson said. "They used their big bats and just beat us at our own long ball game." Tech finally scored in the fourth when Mike Martin singled home Richard Hunter, who earlier singled.

The Bulldogs made it close in the sixth, when Ed Beuerlein's solo home run and RBI singles by Frank Kellner and Danny Dunigan cut UTA's lead to 6-4. "SO YOU NEVER HAVE TO WAIT FOR A SALE." producing the fastest laps on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, the sanctioning body has used another new carburetor restrictor plate to jlow down the world's fastest stock cars. Just two years ago, Bill Elliott set an all-time stock car qualifying record of 212.809 mph on the 2.66-mile, high-banked Talladega Super-. speedway oval. Four days later, however, Bobby Allison lost control of his race car at about 210 mph, sailed high into the air and came excrutiatingly close to flying into the packed grandstand.

The yellow caution light came on in the minds of NASCAR's hierarchy and they set to work slowing down ihe cars here and at Daytona International Speedway, first with a smaller carburetor and then, last year, with the aide of the restrictor plates. The smaller the holes in the plates, the less air reaches the carburetor and the less horsepower is generated. A year ago, with the plate openings at one inch, Davey Allison won the pole position for the Winston 500 at 198.969 and race speeds in the mid 190s. In the heat of July, Darrell Waltrip won the pole for the Tal- Iadega 500 at 196.274. Now, NASCAR has mandated openings of 15-16ths of an inch.
