6C NEWS-PRESS, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1992 JjJ- BUCS: Testaverde shines in Tampa win Popular Williams placed in Bucs' Krewe of Honor 1 1 i -i. 'ft i (If eerily reminiscent of last year's tragic incident in Detroit the play that left Mike Utley paralyzed. Doctors put smelling salts under Rosenbach's nose. He came to and began complaining of back pains. Paramedics took 10 minutes carefully placing Rosenbach onto a stretcher, his head taped into a stationary position.

Doctors said Rosenbach, who missed the 1991 season with a knee injury, did not injure his neck but had a tingling sensation in his arm. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he remained Sunday night for observation. "It was a clean hit, but an unfortunate hit," Wyche said. The hit, however, might have been the turning point of the game.

The Bucs led by only six points at the time. But they promptly drove 35 yards to the 1 Second-and-goal from the 1. The old Bucs the ones who went 3-13 last season might have found a way to mess even this up. But Testaverde faked a handoff, tucking the ball at his side. The entire defense dove toward the line and Testaverde calmly tossed a pass to tight end Ron Hall, who was standing wide open in the right corner of the end zone.

Out came Chandler. And so did a derisive cheer. "Chandler, Chand-ler." The former Buc couldn't From Page 1C (officials ruled Cobb had fumbled but after crossing the goal line). There was a controversial end to the half (the Bucs had to be, called out of the locker room when officials ruled two seconds remained). There was an official yelling, "Time out, Cincinnati" (that's where Wyche was coaching last year).

And, of course, there was a quarterback controversy. was Vinny Testaverde vs. Chris Chandler all over again. Just like last year. But this time, Chandler was playing for the opponents.

And this time, the fans were cheering Testaverde as if he has been their favorite all along. He completed 14-of-25 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown. Chandler, acquired by the Cardinals midway through last season after he was cut by the Bucs, was pushed into action in the third quarter when Rosen-bach (12-of-22, 77 yards, one interception) was involved in a frightening incident. Bucs rookie defensive lineman Santana Dotson one of 20 new players on the team blindsided Rosenbach, forcing the ball loose. Thomas recovered it at the Cardinals' 35.

Rosenbach lie motionless on the ground. It was a scene to the Buccaneers franchise when he left over a contract dispute in 1983. He once wished an 0-16 record upon his former team. But on Sunday, a banner hanging in the stadium summed up many Tampa fans' gratitude for the first quarterback to lead the team to a winning season: "Hey Doug! Thanks, but how 'bout removing that curse?" After all, the Buccaneers were 33-31-1 with Williams, and have gone a dismal 35-108 since. "With me leaving, a lot more than a quarterback left here," said Williams, now working in the Governor's Partnership for a Drug-Free Louisiana.

"I think it killed the team emotionally. "But I don't get into voodoo and curses. That's not my field," he joked. In five years with the Buccaneers, Williams completed 895 of 1,890 passes for 73 touchdowns and 73 interceptions. Later, he became the first black quarterback (in 1988 with the Washington Redskins) to play in a Super Bowl, let alone be its most valuable player as Washington scored 35 points in the second quarter and dumped Denver 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII.

ByTONYBOYLAN Florida Today TAMPA When Doug Williams joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978, being young, black and talented wasn't the formula for success as an NFL quarterback. One ingredient was awry. The NFL had great black players; they just weren't quarterbacks. Williams was on hand at Tampa Stadium on Sunday to be inducted into the Buccaneers' Krewe of Honor, the team hall of fame. Despite an acrimonious relationship with Bucs owner Hugh Culverhouse, Williams, 37, accepted the induction with diplomacy.

He hadn't talked to Culverhouse, Williams said, but he was happy to see former coach John McKay again and talk to the current players. "Doug came by and said I have the talent to be a great quarterback and just to stay focused," starter Vinny Testaverde said. "It means a lot to any player when a great player like him gives you a vote of confidence." A vote of confidence is something Williams didn't give Phoenix cornerback Lorenzo Lynch knocks Mark Carrier on Sunday. THOMAS A. DUI again three catches for 36 yards during Miami's 24-7 victory at Kinnick Stadium. "I was very anxious," the two-year starter said of his pregame preparations. "When I saw my pads hanging in the locker, I felt like a kid on Christmas day. When I put them on and ran out there, a chill went down my spine." He wasn't the only one. "We were really hyped up to have him out there," senior tight end Coleman Bell said.

"He's one of our leaders on offense, and he's been there before. Plus, it gave us a lift to have one of our weapons back on offense." It looked like Miami would lose that weapon midway through the first quarter when Thomas twisted his knee while making his first catch of the season on an 8-yard flair from quarterback Gino Torretta. But after an agonizing few minutes while Thomas grabbed his knee in pain, the senior walked off the field under his own power. Thomas almost scored in the fourth quarter, getting dragged down at the Iowa 2 after catching a 1 4-yard pass. It wasn't quite the start to the season Thomas wanted.

The senior, who just hours earlier had been cleared by the school to play in Saturday night's season opener at Iowa, ran through the hotel's halls, knocking on doors and shouting "L.T.'s could see the happiness in their (his teammates') eyes." Nobody was happier than Thomas, who had been "excused" from practice since his Aug. 18 federal indictment on charges of fraud and making false statements to receive illegal financial aid. Thomas returned to the school's good graces after the U.S.

Attorney's office, which has been investigating alleged Pell Grant fraud at Miami for the past 16 months, allowed Thomas to apply for admittance into a pretrial diversion program that could shield him from prosecution. True to his word, Miami coach Dennis Erickson got Thomas in the game, but not until Miami's second series. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Gainesville native ended the night with By BILL VILONA Pensacola News Journal TALLAHASSEE The passage of time will determine how quickly Florida State University establishes football rivalries in the Atlantic Coast Conference. There may be no need to wait, however, with Duke. After one game, it's already starting to boil.

Duke coach Barry Wilson was critical of Florida State's decision to keep quarterback Charlie Ward playing and throwing in the final minutes of Saturday night's game. Ward tossed a touchdown pass with 1:46 left, punctuating the fourth-ranked Seminoles' 48-21 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium. "I felt it was unusual that they had the first-team quarterback in with two minutes left and (the score) 41-14," a visibly upset Blue Devils coach said in post-game remarks. "Bobby (Bowden) has to call his plays, but if Charlie Ward had gotten hurt there, they would have looked foolish since I thought they were trying to find a second-team quarterback." During his Sunday breakfast with media, FSU coach Bobby Bowden said he meant no harm. He said it was Ward's first game and he needed work.

"That's my decision," he said. "I We'll be here don't ask the other guy. Charlie needs experience. "That's his (Wilson's) prerogative (to be upset). Some people are more sensitive about things like that.

I'm not. You can beat me 65-0, and it don't bother me." The two did meet at midfield for the usual post-game handshake and no harsh words were spoken then. Bowden was concerned about correcting his team's mistakes. Ward threw four interceptions and lost a fumble while scrambling. He compensated by throwing four touchdown passes the most by an FSU quarterback since Peter Tom Willis in 1989.

The Seminoles committed 16 penalties for 113 yards. "First games many times are a comedy of errors, but we should have been better," Bowden said. "That's poor coaching. That's awful. I never felt' we had a grasp on what we were trying to do of fensively The Seminoles' next two games are critical in the ACC title chase.

They play Clemson on Saturday night and have North Carolina State at home Sept. 19.
