James D. (Slippery Jim) Cushway, today faced life Imprisonment in Marquette branch prison, one of many penal Institutions that proved Incapable of holding him on previous occasions. He was sentenced Thursday by Circuit Judge William H. Martin as an habitual criminal after he changed his from innocent to guilty on a fourth offense charge. Cushway's long list of escapes prompted Saginaw sheriff's officers to take extra precautions to Insure his delivery at the northern prison.

The regular bars and locks on his cell were augmented last night by a chain across the steel door. In addition to the Marquette branch prison, Cushway has made his way to freedom from the Southern Michigan prison and from penitentiaries In Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as a number of jails. 27. John Koch, 78, died at 8:45 o'clock last night at the home of his son-in-law, John Hlttle, 503 Berrien street. He had been in 111 health for seven years. Mr. Koch was born November 18, 1878, the son of Adam and Matilda Koch, in Indiana.

He married Clarah Smith on March 16, 1878, and came to Buchanan 17 years ago. Mr. Koch was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church. Surviving are a son, William, of South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen Blllmans, Akron, Panama Canal Zone, and Mrs.

Fred Reinke, of Buchanan. Funeral services will be at the L. O. Swem funeral home Sunday at 2 p. the Rev.

Burial will be In New Troy cemetery. Casket bearers are Charles Smith, Edward Oooderline, Albert Kline, George Kool, Max Yeske and S. P. Sexton. Mrs.

Lewln was born In Beaver, Pa October 28. 1858, and was married there in 1889 to Thomas E. Lewln. i'They came directly to New Troy to reside in the home in which Mr. Lewln was born.

He died December 2, 1930. Surviving are two children, Elinor and Grove. Another son, Walter, died in the war. FRANK MARTELL, 88, DIES IN SOUTH BEND BUCHANAN, Dec. 27.

Frank Mar-tell, 88, died last night at the home -of his daughter, Mrs. Ellea Dater, South Bend, after a several months' Illness. Mr. MarteH was born in Canada February 18, 1847, and came to the United States when a youth. He lived in the Sawyer-New Troy vicinity many years.

Since the death of his rwife in 1928 he has lived with his children. He leaves two sons, William and John, of Buchanan, and three daughters, Dater, and Mrs. Mary Baker and Mrs. Mary Heff, of Nlles. The remains are at the T.
