The Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, La. Thursday, June 4, 1987 B-5 Boggs, playboy photographer Macey trading places Wade Boggs is no dummy. "There is a fair chance that four or five baseball players from a within a 20-mile radius of Alexandria could be in the major leagues within four or five years." Michael A. Lough The Town Talk Menard assistant football coach Robbie Mahfouz actually has a bubble gum card in his honor. It's from his days on the Jacksonville Bulls team in the Useless Football League, or USFL.

I finally saw it Tuesday. Well, not the actual card, but a copy his girlfriend Claudine has. It's obviously a collector's item. He probably has the only one printed, although he denies he paid the folks to produce one for They say that the three-pointer at the buzzer Saturday by Joe Du-mars of Detroit was worth about $100 million. The spread on the idation, and Ryan can obviously be Lakers in six.

Book So Green Bay coach Forrest Gregg said his opinion of Packer Mossy Cade hasn't changed after the player was judged guilty of sexually assaulting a relative's wife. Guess Forrest thought Charles Manson was just a wild 'n crazy Snubs justified? Pat Riley of the Lakers and K.C. Jones of the Celtics have never won the NBA coach of the year awards. Maybe neither should get it because they coach the biggest whiners in pro sports today. No tlayer on either team has ever ouled anybody.

Just ask them or watch them. And both teams are way too talented to have to cry so Boy, these College World Series games take forever. If it wasn't rain or near-rain, it was just slow people. Athletes have no respect for Did you realize that more people watched the Tioga-Bolton football game than saw the Beach Boys concert here? Boston-Detroit NBA playoff game was 4 points. The shot made it Count me in the crowd of folks wondering how effective Indiana University president John Ryan would be in charge of the NCAA when he wouldn't discipline Bobby Knight a few years ago in his quest to become the world's best chair-thrower.

But how many times will a Playboy photographer give up his Boggs and photog David Macey traded places recently after Boggs was interviewed by Playboy. Macey took BP, and Boggs took pictures of a Playboy cover girl. I don't suppose Macey would like to write a sports column in a mid-size daily newspaper in Louisiana for a change. I could borrow a camera and fly to Bermuda or something No, I guess not. Notes and quotes The good news was that ESPN again broadcast the College World Series from Omaha.

The bad news is that Tim Brando was on the air. The former hot dog of Baton Rouge broadcasting has the most grating personality in a profession filled with grating personalities. He's best served doing gymnastics commentary with Mary Lou Retton and Vin Scully in Guam at 3 a.m on How strong a baseball area is this? There is a fair chance that four or five baseball players from within a 20-mile radius of Alexandria could be in the major leagues within four or five years. You've got Pollock's Russell Springer (Grant High and LSU), Tioga's Kevin McGehee, Alexandria's Williams Cole (ASH) Terry Mathews (Menard and NLU), and perhaps Marvin Cole or Craig Bradshaw(ASH). Don't forget about ex-Trojan William Taylor.

Playing center field for the Charleston, S.C. entry in the South Atlantic league, Taylor was hitting .317 as of May 25. That ranks in the top 15 of the league. He leads the SAL in stolen bases with 25, and has been to the plate 161 times (51 hits), more than anybody else in the Mathews: will pitch Continued from B-l to do," said Mathews, who played first base and right field, besides working on the mound, at Northeast. "I said I'd play wherever you think I'd be best, whatever would be my quickest way to the big leagues." Mathews' biggest contribution at Northeast was with his bat, and this past season his mound duty was limited to a relief role.

He responded well, however, recording a team-high four saves and struck out 30 batters in 32 innings. NLU Coach Lou St. Amant says Mathews' fast- ball is consistently clocked at 88 mph or better. St. Amant calls Mathews "the best hitter in the history of Northeast baseball." Mathews is NLU's career leader in home runs (41), at-bats (571), hits (175), runs (131), doubles (36), triples (12), total bases (366), slugging percentage (.641) and walks (114).

Despite his hitting achievements, Mathews said Gassaway told him the Rangers believed he could progress quicker as a relief pitcher. "Coach St. Amant told me about half the teams were looking at me for hitting and about half were looking at me for pitching," said Mathews, "so I was prepared for that. Most of 'em said they could overlook the fact that I didn't have good speed if I was a catcher, but not for first base or the outfield." Asked why there would be a demand for speed at first base, Mathews said, "Well a lot of teams said they don't draft first basemen much anymore because that's where they play the old guys who've slowed down but can still hit." Mathews said he has been to several big league baseball camps in recent weeks, including a Rangers camp in Donaldson-ville. Gassaway was at that camp.

"He told me then they would do everything they could to get me, that they really liked me," Mathews said. "He said they'd try their best to get me. I guess they did."
