today to William Smith of Riverdale and Elizabeth A Robins bf Layton President Franklin Harris of the Brigham Young university visited the Weber college assembly Tuesday and gave an interesting talk to the students on the subject of Mexico Following are some of his remarks "Mexico our nearest neighbor to the south Is different in many respects than we are We see in Mexico not only something of America but something of Europe at the same time "When you visit Mexico you will be astonished to find how large it Is Mexico is as large as the British Isles Germany France Austria Hungary and Czechoslovakia all put together Its population is about fifteen million which means that it is about six times as densely populated as Utah has a great mixture of races the greatest of any of the countries that we come in direct contact with The predominant race is Indian Around the valley of Mexico there are several groups of Indians that can scarcely speak to the people of the neighboring village because they are of a different tribe and speak a different language think of Mexico as being uncivilized but when we visit it it is astonishing for us to learn that the present civilization in Mexico is very much older than the civilization of the United States We think of the Pilgrim Fathers coming a long time ago In Mexico there are a good many buildings and great churches now standing that were built 100 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth Mexico was 100 years old wnen the United States was first settled "Mexico has a great plateau running down the center of it On the sides of this plateau running in from California on the west we have a coastal plain that is very fertile This coastal plain is so large that we could pui a good many Cali-fomias down along it Below the plain will be found tropical forests that are very productive of fruit and various other things "The Latin peoples are much ahead of the Teutons in the idea of romance and beauty and the love or flQwers music art and the sweet things Mexico breathes a little of thes pirit of the Latin Dinner Thursday The Kappa Beta chapter of Delphians will give PLAY GOOD POINTS OF EUROPEAN LIFE BELATED i Mission Director Draws Contrast At Clubs Joint Meeting Five great lessons of European life that should be followed by America were explained to Rotarians and Kiwanians of Ogden this noon and contrasted with five other lessons of European customs that should not be followed when Dr John A Wldtsoe president of the European mission of the Latter-day Saints church spoke at a joint luncheon meeting of the two Ogden clubs In the Hotel Bigelow The five lessons to be followed were given as follows: Industry thrift the advantage of living life normally respect for law and authority and better artistic appreciation Each of these subjects was developed briefly by the speaker who declared that in none of these respects did Americans measure up to Europeans Regarding law obedience he spoke of the "so-called prohibition" as "a disgraceful thing" and declared that -we shall not build a great republic and natino until we learn obedience to law As to living life normally he said that Americans live hurriedly and indiscriminately UNDESIRABLE TRAITS Pictured in contrast were the five lessons which he said showed what European traits should nt be followed including undue veneration of traditions class distinction and class education dependence on other countries economically intemperance and the wrong kind of national psychology He declared that another war is certain in Europe though the people do not want it because of the wrong psychology through wnich European nations anticipate war As to intemperance he said that in Europe is in Inverse ratio to the strength of the alcoholic beverages He urged America to maintain its economic independence by being self-sustaining and spoke for schools and universities supported by the people and open to all people without thought of class" Four principles of national success were enunciated by the speaker as growing from these lessons: Industry education honesty and faith TWO PRESIDE Dr' Wldtsoe was introduced by
