B-4 Tow Talk, Alexandria Pweville, La Tuesday, November 11, 196 Navratilova Easily Tops Mandlikova 'Mac-in-the-Box' Star McEnroe Still Popping Off 1 111 1 I I A 1 tit jl ILjk WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) -Martina Navratilova defended her Virginia Slims of New England tennis title Monday, serving and volleying her way to a 12th tournament championship this year with a 6-2, 6-2 finals victory over second-seed Hana Mandlikova. The top-seeded Navratilova dominated at the net throughout the match, gaining an opening-game break and jumping to a 4-1 lead in the first set. The 30-year-old Navratilova won five consecutive games in the second set as she required just 57 minutes to take her second New England Slims title this year. She won the tournament when it was last held Jan.

14. The win Monday was worth $45,000 to Navratilova; second-place earned Mandlikova $22,600. Navratilova upset Mandlikova at the outset of their match, taking quick control at the net and volleying three consecutive winners before allowing Mandlikova a single service point. Navratilova traded service games with her 24-year-old opponent and scored yet another break at love in the fifth game for her 4-1 lead. After relinquishing a match-point opportunity, Navratilova rocketed a forehand winner for her 414th match win against only 14 losses since 1982.

ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) -Back on the tour after a six-month sabbatical, John McEnroe still has the flawless style of a No. 1 tennis player. But he also is having a tough time shedding his old, mouthy ways. An excitable boy still lurks at the surface of the 27-year-old New Yorker. Like a Jack-In-The-Box, the boy still can pop out with a vengeance.

When he beat Thomas Muster, an Austrian teen-ager, in the quarterfinals of the $920,000 European Community Championships last week, McEnroe's mouth worked overtime. He argued with the referee, the linesmen or the crowd, and shouted barely disguised obscenities. A week earlier, the excitable boy had yelled at the Paris Open referee long after McEnroe was beaten by Spain's Sergio Casal. It got him a 42-day suspension. Such outbursts clash with the postmatch McEnroe.

In the past, he could be as rude off-court as during a match. But meeting with the media now, he speaks quietly of his game, his strategy, the other players and his actress-wife, Tatum O'Neal. "I'm happy to be playing again happy to be back," he said after the Muster match. He beat Miloslav Mecir of If I question calls, it takes something away from me. I went (into the ECC final) trying not to get involved It was a big test," he said.

The victory was his fourth since netted him $210,000. This week, he will play in London's $375,000 Benson and Hedges event, and is seeded fifth, behind Stefan Edberg of Sweden, Frenchmen Henri Leconte and Yannick Noah, and Mecir. "I felt I wanted to play one more tournament this year," he said. "I want to get a few more points (in the ATP rankings)." According to Noah, McEnroe has a way to go before being No. 1 again.

"He is not at the level he was at when he was No. 1," said Noah, who lost to McEnroe in the ECC semifinals. But he speaks with respect for McEnroe's zeal to regain the top spot he held from 1981-85. "He needs more time. Comebacks are difficult, and John seems to want to go through hard times.

He needs that for motivation," Noah said. "I need to keep my goals down," McEnroe said. "Because I took some time off, I was expecting too much. That was bad for my concentration and I have not been playing at 100 percent. At times, I miss crucial points." John McEnroe needs to learn when to bite his lip.

Czechoslovakia in Sunday's ECC final in a tough five-set match, a significant victory for several reasons. Mecir, 22, is a new kid on the block who surged into the top 10 in the past year. "He's the kind of guy I need to beat to get back to the top," McEnroe said. Despite some poor calls in the final, McEnroe kept the excitable boy and his concentration in check and indicated he soon may be No. 1 again.

"I'm generally not pleased with the way they handled Len's financial affairs," James Bias told the Post. "They did a bum job." A. James Bias claims Fentress made and did not fulfill an oral commitment to limit his son's spending to "around $350 per month" and to provide him with life insurance. Fentress told the Post he acted properly "every step of the way." He said he set up a monthly budget for Bias and advised him to curb his "excessive" spending.
