B-4 Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, Tuesday, November 1986 Indy Bowl Honors NASA Other honorees have been actor John Wayne, entertainer Bob Hope, commentator Paul Harvey, President Ronald Reagan, radio-TV personality Art Linkletter, entertainer and humanitarian Danny Thomas, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. veterans who served in Vietnam. In a prepared statement, Thompson said: "I can think of no other group of dedicated individuals who have inspired our nation any than the men and women of the space program." "The award, although made to NASA, actually is a tribute to the Mnsands of public servants whose devotion, integrity, bravery and patriotism has brought our nation to its leadership in space exploration." SHREVEPORT (AP) The nation's space agency will get the annual Gen. Omar Bradley Spirit of Independence Award at the 1986 Independence Bowl and will send an astronaut here for the Dec.

20 postseason college football game to accept it, bowl Chairman Jim Thompson announced Monday. Thompson said the astronaut "will be a veteran of the shuttle program" and that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will announce his identity in the next couple of days. The Spirit of Independence Award was first presented to the late Gea Omar Nelson Bradley in 1977 as a symbol of U.S. freedom and independence. yy iK Bosox, Seaver To Negotiate BOSTON (AP) The Boston Red Sox announced Monday they had decided against ing 1987 contract options on pitcher Tom Seaver and center fielder Tony Armas.

The Red Sox also said they had notified pitcher Sammy Stewart and infielder Dave Stapleton that they would not be offered new contracts next season. Red Sox General Manager Lou Gorman, however, said Seaver could be back with the team next year. "He asked if we would consider negotiating another contract and I said yes, we would," Gorman said. Seaver, who will turn 42 on Nov. 17, was not able to pitch in the post-season after injuring his right knee in September.

He underwent arthroscopic surgery last week. Seaver was 5-7 with Boston after he was acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the end of June in a trade for outfielder Steve Lyons. Armas, 33, hit .264 in 121 games with 11 home runs and 58 RBI last season. His availability was limited by recurring leg injuries during the regular season. Armas suffered an ankle injury in Game 5 of the American League playoffs, and only appeared as a pinch-hitter in the World Series against the New York Mets.

The right-handed Stewart, 32, compiled a 4-1 record in 27 relief appearances with a 4.38 ERA. Stewart was not used in the post season. LSU Violations Horford later enrolled at the University of Miami. Wharton said once LSU receives the official inquiry this week, faculty representatives would meet and study the allegations. They will then decide how they want to answer the allegations and file a report with the NCAA.

That is the same process LSU used in the football investigation. The NCAA eventually put LSU on probation for 12 violations, none of which were major. The only sanction imposed was limiting assistant coach Terry Lewis to 20 days off-campus recruiting for buying a fish sandwich for J.R. Ambrose. (Continued from B-l) recruitment of Horford was 100 percent clean.

Horford, a 7-foot-l center from the Dominican Republic, was heavily recruited in 1985 and originally signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Houston, but the NCAA ruled Houston could not offer him a scholarship because of the school violated rules recruiting him. Horford subsequently enrolled at LSU, but Brown dismissed him from the team on Nov. 2, 1985 just two weeks after practice began saying Horford missed a practice and refused to take part in an intrasquad scrimmage. Veteran Tom Seaver's contract will be renegotiated by Red Sox. Football status has been the pivotal issue facing the conference since Texas-Arlington dropped its program and Lousiana Tech announced its intentions to resign from the Southland in July to per-sue major college football status. To keep the conference above the NCAA minimum of six members, the Southland wooed three Texas schools from the Gulf Star Conference in early August. But the Southland has been troubled by Louisiana Tech's overtures to several Southland Conference schools to join its new league. Southland member Arkansas State has already reportedly committed to join Tech's new league. SLC member Lamar is also close to joining.

The defection of these schools would result in the Southland losing its automatic basketball tournament bid. Of the three Texas schools added this summer, only Southwest Texas State has Division I eligibility. Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston are still in a two-year transition period between Division II and Division I and ineligible for the playoffs. If Arkansas State and Lamar defect, the Southland would be left with only four schools with Division I eligibility (Northeast Louisiana, McNeese State, North Texas State and Southwest Texas State).

This could open the door for Northwestern State to join the Southland, but it's a slim possibility. Northwestern State was rejected for Southland membership three years ago. This summer the three Texas schools left for the Southland Conference, leaving Northwestern State and Nicholls State as independents for the upcoming football season. Northwestern State athletic officials are again making inquiries about joining the Southland Conference because of the recent developments. "They know who and where we are," said NSU Athletic Director Tynes Hildebrand. "The situation we most desire is membership in the Southland." That possibility was not discussed at the Dallas meeting, however, said conference information director Don Graham. ASH Stays Perfect Eric Ballot broke a 30-yard touchdown run Monday, giving the ASH freshmen a 7-2 win over Pineville and a perfect season.

Ballot's run came just before halftime to give ASH a 8-0 record. It was the second straight undefeated season for many of the ASH players who posted a perfect season at Brame Junior High last year. Pineville recorded the safety late in the game when the ASH quarterback deliberately went into the end zone to gain the free kick. 52, Mississippi 50, Bavlor 29, Florida State 23, Colorado 22, Michigan State 20, North Carolina 19, Brigham Young 17, Fresno State 13, Air Force 11, San Jose State 9, Florida 8.
