Hubbard, 25, spent four years in the Texas organization as a third baseman before being released in 1987. Between 1984 and 1987, he hit .268 with two home runs and82RBIs. But members of the organization always liked his arm. They liked it so much they invited him back to camp this past spring training as a pitcher.

"I hadn't pitched since (American) Legion ball and in high school," the native of Walpole, N.H., said. "But I've always had a good arm. So, after I was released, I said, Why He joined the Rangers, from extended spring training, after the season started in April. So far, he's shown some ability on the mound even though his record is just 1-3 with a 4.42 ERA in 18 games. Control hasn't been a problem: he's averaging only 2.5 walks per nine innings and has a 2-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio.

"I've used it as a learning experience," he said. "I'm trying to get by on locating my pitches." His fastball is usually in the 82-86 mph range. So he can't rely on blowing batters away with heat. Recently, however, Hubbard's been distracted from his pitching career because of a rash of injuries to infielders Dean Palmer, Fred Samson and Pat Garman. Charlotte Manager Bobby Jones has been forced to use Hubbard at third.

"I just looked at it as and opportunity to fill in," Hubbard said. "I didn't think we'd have four or five people drop like flies." In 14 games, he's hitting .234 with 3 RBIs. His defensive play has been perfect. "I'm just having a good time," he said. I don't look at it as a do-or-die situation." He said that he didn't even take batting practice until three or four days after his debut at third base on July 9.

"Before I was looking for one pitch, a fastball away, and tried to hit it to the opposite field," the right-handed hitter and pitcher said. "But now I'm looking to drive the ball more." He has to caution himself against delusions of grandeur at his old position. "It's kind of made the blood boil again, for playing third," said Hubbard, who is a graduate of the University TOM PRICENews-Press Jeff Hubbard, after pitching earlier in the season, has moved back to third base because of News -Press tiiusl lr4iM bllWwJ 1 H.v Win fH lut nUutwl, 4snv "i of North Carolina. "I'm getting excited about it, but I know I shouldn't. I know my future is pitching, and as far as third is con1 cerned, there is no future.

"My weaknesses, as a third baseman, have always been the lack of foot-speed and a lack of power. As you rise in baseball, third base is a power position. Defensively I'm good on the balls hit at me, but the lack of speed and range hurts me there." But he maintained that the versatility of playing two totally different positions can't hurt if he does get to a higher level as a pitcher. With experience in the batter's box and on the mound, Hubbard has a different perspective than most players. "I try to think like a hitter when I'm pitching.

The kind of pitchers who gave me trouble were the ones who kept me off balance," he said. "I always thought that location was better than velocity anyway. You get people out by keeping them of balance." Butler runs way to better health By PAUL HARRIS News-Press Staff Writer "I'm a firm believer in exercise to stay fit and to look healthier and younger." Those are the words of John Butler, a Sarasota resident who is the director of data processing for the Charlotte's circuit court system. He's hurting my hip. And when it healed, I picked back up with my running." A triathlon is a 2.5-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon (26 miles, 385 yards) run.

He competed on the Bud Light Amateur Triathlon circuit and qual-ified for the 1986 Bud Light Championship in Hilton Head, S.C., in 1986. But now, because of time constraints, he concentrates on running. "The other two (biking an swimming) are a back priority right now," he said. "I don't have the time to train the way I used to. I trained too much, maybe five or six hours a day." Now he does four-to-six miles at least five times a week.

in 1970. Eight years later, he started running and joined the Manasota Track Club in Sarasota. "I became interested in marathons and ended up liking to do longdistance runs," he said. "In 1984 and 1985, 1 did my serious running and qualified for the Boston Marathon both those years." Butler's 'inning career suffered a setback in late 1985 when he injured his hip. But he turned that negative into a positive.

"I got into triathlons because of the injured hip. I couldn't run long distances so I started swimming as part of my therapy," he said. "I got into triathlon training because I could swim and ride the bike wihout Something for everyone, everyday! also an exercise fanatic especially when it comes to running. "I'm addicted to it. If I don't work out regularly, I get cranky," he said.

"I just enjoy it when I run. My wife can 135 p4 135 HOTEL MOTEL 123 DELIVERY DRIVERS HEALTH CARE HEALTH CARE Announcements DENTAL hyglenlst, private practice. 482-5900 or 466-4463. HOUSEKEEPERS needed Immediately. Apply In person.
