The line work, the pushing and shoving, was everything that once made Midwest football so brutal, intimidating and unbeatable. "We were coming at them from all angles, putting on great pressure," said defensive tackle Christian Peter.

"They don't score a touchdown, we win." Basically, this game was done the moment Colorado coach Bill McCartney chose to kick off instead of receive. Colorado was down by 24 points in the third quarter. There was no turning point. It was finally vindication day. There was no missing the local color in Lincoln.

The local Color was red. Bright red. Husker fans were sick of coming close, so very close, as they did last year in a two-point loss to Florida State at the Orange Bowl. Osborne was tired of winning nine or more games every season but never winning 12. Osborne's team had dropped its last 1 2 games against Top-5 competition.

This is not the way to win a national championship. The Huskers were mad that they were underdogs in their own sacred stadium, filled to the brim again yesterday, 76,131 fans, for the 200th straight sellout. For one day, at least, the injustices were righted in Lincoln. Colorado could take its Rocky Mountain vistas and its black-and-gold uniforms, take them all the way to the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe. "We've been labeled as underdogs, and obviously we don't take that lightly," Berringer said.

"Especially at home." The goalposts bent, then came cracking down at Memorial Stadium under the weight of the fans. Outside, the crowd was piling out in a sea of red. Downtown Lincoln and the campus area were coming back to life. Mike Babcock already was composing his next column in his head. He probably will not pick Kansas next week.

Poor Babcock, like so many others, figured mighty, flighty Colorado was the favorite at Memorial Stadium, the next great No.l fun-and-run college football team of the world. They all lacked faith in the Big Red ball-control machine, the team without a healthy quarterback, the team that definitely could have used a running back with a fanciful name.

The world was wrong, for once. Nebraska was right. And today, as sportswriters and coaches review the latestscenes of destruction, they will have to keep Nebraska knocking at the door of mighty Penn State. "I don't care much about polls," muttered Tom Osborne, a coach who knows the words by heart. "I gave up on those." The Huskers, never crowd-pleasers outside their own state borders, were not glamorous again.

"We told him we were coming for him all day. Usually when you say something to a guy, he'll say something back. He just went back to the huddle and dropped his head." But while the Buffaloes were looking down, the Cornhuskers were looking up. At the No. 1 spot that still may elude them today, but the No.

"We practiced for the things they were going to do, but maybe the speed was something we couldn't prepare for. As the game was going on, we tried to sort out why things weren't effective.

But I'm at a loss why they didn't work." The loss snapped Colorado's 1 1-game winning streak, which matched its longest since World War II. By trailing 17-0 at halftime, the Buffaloes had their first scoreless first half since 1992. "There is nothing I can say. We played horrible and they played great," TE Christian Fauria said. "Our team is one of the closest teams I've ever been around and right now we are going to have to rally behind that," McCartney said.

"Our expectations were so high and our commitment so deep that now it is going to be a real test of unity and our grit." "This was for the Orange Bowl game," Nebraska LB Matt Russell said.
