"He's a great back, but our line did a great job, especially Craig Moore," Meadows said of his 6-4, 310-pound offensive right tackle. Williams gained 82 yards on 14 carries. District Overall By JOHN HARRIS III News-Press staff writer The city of Fort Myers was spared by the tropical depression that battered most of South Florida on Friday, but the Bishop Verot football team was hit by Hurricane Edgerrin.

Immokalee star running back Edgerrin James continued his romp through opposing defenses for 219 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns, leading the Indians (4-1) to a 12-0 triumph over the host Vikings James, who felt "kind of weak" while battling flu-like symptoms during the day, took some cold medicine and went about his business as usual. When asked how he kept his endurance through his malady, James said, "Once I started playing, I was alright." James, who entered the game as the state's leading rusher, has 1,159 yards on 1 24 carries plus 1 4 touch-do wns in five games. James' first score came four minutes into the game, as he crashed in from the 1 Following a Dedrin Smith interception on the ensuing posses sion, Immokalee drove down to the Viking 3, where James was stopped on fourth down. But Bishop Verot gave the ball right back when Jean Cantave fell on a Keith Williams fumble on the Viking 16-yard line. The visitors then moved the ball to the 1, then had a James touchdown burst called back due to an illegal motion.

Immokalee then commited three straight penalties to put itselves out of scoring range. "We did make lots of errors, but the kids still stayed mentally tough and played like warriors," Immoka lee coach Gary Meadows said. After the stop, quarterback Nate Hagerman took the Vikings 60 yards on 13 plays to the Indians' 12. More than six minutes into the drive, Williams was stopped on a fourth-and-2 by linebacker Roy Campbell. "Roy Campbell was all over the place tonight.

He and Dedrin came up with some great defensive plays," Meadows said. James scored his 1 4th touchdown of the year midway through the third quarter on a slashing 13-yard jaunt through the right side of the Verot defense. I Pts. With first- and-10 at the Fort Myers 41, Church took a pitch and cruised the right side. He turned the corner in a hurry and outraced several Sailors for a 59-yard scoring romp.

Church said the TD had special significance. His grandfather, Robert Brown, died earlier in the week. "When I saw that opening, I though about my grandfather," Church said. "I was devastated early in the week, but then I realized he would be outrageous." "It seemed," added Jamie Thomas, "like we scored every time we touched the ball in the second half." And he did when he brought back a punt 48 yards to end the scoring. It was his second career punt-return TD.

The Seahawks accounted for 407 yards on the ground and 564 total if you factor in 89 yards in punt returns, including Thomas'. Cape amassed 159 yards in its first 14 plays from scrimmage, but didn't score until Hawthorn bulled in from a yard out to cap an eight-play, 62-yard drive 3:31 into the second quarter. Ironically, it came after a fumble by Venice quarterback Jason Mort at the Seahawks' 38. Two dazzling scrambles by Murray were Cape's second TD drive, the last a 17-yarder with 2:25 left in the half, and a 41-yard, Murray-to-Waymon Idlette bomb set up Hawthorn's second score, making it 21-0 at halftime. "My receivers were open," said the left-handed Murray of his scatter-and-run specials.

"But my back was blocking out to the direction I was supposed to throw. Soljusttookoff." Harvin waited no longer than the first play of the second half to add a 58-yard rumble to the end zone, and scored again less than seven minutes later after taking a desperation pitch from Murray onthird-and-goal from the 18. As the pass sailed through the air, Kearse realized it was underthrown.

He ran back three yards to catch it, then turned around and sprinted to the end zone. "It was a bootleg," Cartmell said. "My guard pulled and made a good block. I just did what I was supposed to do." North Fort Myers scored twice in third quarter: a 28-yard pass from Cartmell to Harrison Thomas, Navas' 18-yard run. North coach Wade Hummel decided to put in some of his reserves on offense, including 6-foot, 225 pound J.T.

Colleges across the country are running up big phone bills trying to land DuPont High School wide receiver Randy Moss. Moss said he hears from Notre Dame, Florida, Ohio State and West Virginia once a week. They'd probably contact him more often but NCAA rules prevent them. And naming all the other schools that have contacted Moss probably would fill up the first half of a newspaper page. "If you're the kind of guy who doesn't get many phone calls, I guess you look forward to receiving all the calls," he said.

"But it's nothing I look forward to. Sometimes after football practice it wears me down. I guess it's something you have to do if you want to get up in the world. "Ohio State, Florida and Notre Dame are down pat," he said. Moss, who also plays defensive back, has just 13 receptions for 241 yards through four games, well off the numbers he put up as a sophomore and junior.

But teams are devising special coverages to prevent him from beating them. DuPont coach Dick Whitman, seeking a third straight state title, is simply turning to a bevy of other athletes who probably will end up playing college ball somewhere. "He doesn't have the starting statistics, but he's playing good, solid football, particularly on the defensive side of the ball," Whitman said. ByDONNIEWILKIE News-Press staff writer VENICE Cape Coral's return to the Friday night lights was stalled for all of 1 2 minutes but then it was lights out for the hapless Venice Indians. The defending District 5A-11 champions scored 21 points in the final 8:29 of the second quarter, then had four more touchdowns before they ran their 10th play of the second half in a 48-0 non-district laugher at Powell-Davis Stadium.

Cape (3-1) was off last week. Four lost fumbles three of the them inside the Venice 30-yard-line kept the Seahawks grounded fora while. But running backs Ray Hawthorn (11 carries, 158 yards, three touchdowns) and Isaac Harvin (10-104, two TDs) and quarterback Montain Murray (7-119, one TD) were already off to the races. And once they figured out a way to hold onto the ball, the pointscameinahurry. "I guess we had butterfingers or something," said Murray, who lost fumbled twice in the first quarter but improvised on pass plays for dashes of 17, 30 and 17 yards on the first two second-quarter TD drives.

"But our motto is, 'Turn negatives into We kept our heads up and things worked out in the end." Did they ever. The mismatch reached its, uh, low point with 7:37 remaining in the game, when Cape coach James Hale offered the 0-4 Indians a chance to play with a running clock. They refused, so Hale ordered backup quarterback Chad Jeffries to take two delay-of-game penalties and down the ball four times after the 'Hawks had driven to the Venice 6. "I didn't know what to do," Hale admitted. "Our other running backs are just as good as our starters.

If we hadn't fumbled so many times early, that score By DAVID DORSEY News-Press staff writer When the fourth quarter finally arrived, North Fort Myers led by 35 points. The scoring continued, however, as a Red Knight defensive tackle scored the final touchdown while playing offense. With two running backs rushing for more than 100 yards, North Fort Myers took an early lead before surging past Riverdale for a 48-6 victory Friday night at Riverdale. Red Knight running back Cisco Navas scored the first touchdown on a 3-yard run. He finished with 122 yards on 11 carries.

"Last year, we would start scoring a lot in the second half. This year, we like to get going early," said Navas, who scored another touchdown in the third quarter with an 18-yard run. "It helps a lot when two backs get 100 yards." Marlon Gaymon finished with 138 yards on 15 carries. He broke free for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter. "We don't have a game next week," Gaymon said.

"We wanted to come out a play hard." With the score 20-0, Riverdale finally reached the scoreboard on a 6-yard pass from Brad Haley to Owen Stewart. It was the last time the Raiders would get even near the end zone; they managed just one first down in the second half. Riverdale running back Troy Smith gained 60 yards on 11 carries, and was not pleased with his performance. "I wasn't running like I was supposed to," Smith said. "I made too many mental mistakes.

The whole team made too many mental mistakes." With 15 seconds remaining in.
