Details on the band's Florida stops and ticket release date will be announced next month. Although most of the callers favored Jagger, Keith Richards also drew thumbs up. REVIEW The final cut, "Mean Disposi tion," is a rockabilly-flavored warmup for the Voodoo Lounge tour that starts Aug. 1 in Washington, D.C. It's played by the touring band the four Stones, Jones and Leavell and It cooks.

I If the tours are like their Jeff McCullers of Fort Myers said that although Jagger gets the most press and Charlie Watts actually keeps the group together musically and professionally, the greatest of all the Stones has to be Richards. namesake albums, Voodoo Lounge will crush steel Wheels. ITSUDISI1I mm McCULLERS time by always playing darn good music." One fan, Michele Familo of Sani-bel, couldn't bear to pick just one of the dynamic duo, so she voted for both Jagger and Richards. "They're both so dynamite in concert that it's unbelievable," she said. The most New Age response came from Don Mangus of Fort Myers, who has been a Stones fan since the '60s.

Mangus attributes the band's lasting popularity to its karma which must be amazingly good, since the bad boys all have managed to stay alive since the death of Brian Jones, who drowned in 1969. In view of all this local adoration, many area record stores have placed much heavier than normal orders for "Voodoo Lounge," which fans reportedly have been asking about for weeks. For example, Ray Gainey of Rainbow Records in Fort Myers, said his store ordered about 25 percent more albums than usual. 'Voodoo Lounge' should sell very well nationally because the Stones are touring to support it," he said. "And we also expect it to do great here because the tour is coming to Florida." Gainey said the band still has tremendous appeal here and its old stuff sells quite well.

still popular because they move with the trends," he said. music doesn't always need precise planning or high-tech production (though producer Don Was reportedly bolstered Jagger's aging voice electronically). More often than not (if we conveniently forget "Undercover" and "Dirty the Stones have followed their Instincts. That's the case here, and it makes "Voodoo Lounge" their best album since 1981s "Tattoo You." The album's 15 songs are all over the map. Like bears emerging from hibernation, the Stones shake out the cobwebs with the first three tracks blistering rockers intended to get the ya-yas out and then the fun starts.

On "The Worst," Richards plays acoustic cowboy, with Ronnie Wood riding shotgun on pedal steel guitar. The percussion-heavy "Moon Is Up" stars keyboardist Chuck Leavell on harpsichord and harmonium, with guest star Benmont Tench adding "accordion air whoosh." Charlie Watts turns in another unassuming, yet yeomanlike job on the drums. New bassist Darryl Jones is surprisingly forceful, pushing the rhythm instrument to the front on Knight-Ridder News Service Haven't we heard all this before? The angry, minor-key chord progressions, snarling vocals and persistent pop of rock's most steady snare drum? Of course we have, but this is no simple spell of blues-based deja vu. It's the Rolling Stones, the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band, and it's what we expect to hear better yet, what we want to hear. "Voodoo Lounge," the Stones' 22nd studio album, 36th overall, will be released today, and it finds the Glimmer Twins in raucous harmony, cranking out those time-tested road-house rhythms and gutbucket dance tunes, with a few experimental excursions to exotic stylistic locales that break up the flow like speed bumps.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards no longer are rock 'n' roll's bad boys (bad granddads, maybe), but they still know how to have a good time. Complaints undoubtedly will be raised about the preponderance of loose-knit jams and the lack of fully realized songs; the same was said of Richards' recent solo albums. But "Voodoo Lounge" is more than rhythm-driven grooves and power chords. It's a declaration by a group of rock statesmen that good mm -1 .11.. life of managing the group did him In, so he dropped out of the business and opened Easton's Music in Naples.

"The Stones are by far one of the most professional and talented acts in the business," he said. "They've never missed an engagement or given a short performance. They moan and groan, but they always give their best." Easton, who spent time with the bad boys a few years ago when they unwound during the Steel Wheels tour at the Ritz-Carlton In Naples, said the band was built on a controversial, anti-establishment image. "But none of them were ever prima donnas even when they became superstars," he said. From a less personal perspective, John Connell of Fort Myers summed up many local fans' opinions of the band: "The Stones have been the world's greatest rock and roll band for over 30 years because it has been able to recast American rhythm and blues in a form that appeals to a mass audience, unlike its early blues heroes such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf," Connell said.

The Stones, he said, were pitched as agents of darkness in contrast to the freshly scrubbed Beatles. Rebellious or just plain bored kids simply couldn't get enough of the Stones. The band, incidentally, was named after the Muddy Waters' song, "Rollin' Stone." Connell, like most of the callers, believes the longevity of the Stones is duetoJagger. "An astute observer of cultural trends, Jagger has successfully negotiated personality clashes within the band and fickle popular taste to offer a consistently salable product for decades," Connell said. "In an industry where a successful artist's career might last five years, and many artists have only a single hit song or album, the Rolling Stones continue to succeed by writing songs that speak to the hearts of its fans and by putting on the greatest live rock and roll show on earth." He said Richards may be a favorite target of comedians who make fun of his drug addictions, run-ins with the law and his "walking dead" appearance, but none of these things defines him.

"It's the guitar," McCullers said. "Chugging and churning, slashing and burning, his guitar does the work of a dozen other players all at once. It's haunting, it's hypnotic and you can dance to it. Keith is the greatest of the Stones because his guitar IS the Stones, period." Gary Gilbert of Fort Myers and Bob Streicher of Fort Myers Beach share McCullers' sentiments. "Keith embodies the sound, image and soul of the Stones," said Gilbert, who attributes the band's lasting popularity to the fact that its basic rock and roll music with its heart is timeless.

Streicher said Richards is the real musical influence and genius behind the Stones. "They're still popular because they've moved along with the times," he said. "You can hear their music on new rock radio as well as classic rock radio. They've stood the test of CAPE CORAL EYE CENTER Vm. mm etm mpf" IfllaD-Clflairtl Announces Hew Extended Hours Benjamin G.
