(AP) JoJo Townsell and Billy Griggs, a pair of seldom-used Jets receivers, scored touchdowns Monday night as New York beat the Seattle Seahawks 30-14 and created an unprecedented five-way tie in the AFC East.

The Jets, 4-4, are tied with Buffalo, Miami, New England and Indianapolis, the only time this late in the season such a deadlock has existed. Seattle fell to 5-3, two games behind San Diego in the AFC West. Townsell broke a scoreless tie in the second period when he returned a Ruben Rodriguez punt 91 yards. Townsell wasn't touched on the return and made a nifty move to speed past Rodriguez, the last man who could stop him. But Townsell also fumbled a third-quarter punt, leading to Seattle's first score.

Griggs, a third-string tight end who plays almost exclusively on special teams, caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ken O'Brien in the fourth quarter. That score put the Jets in front 20-14 after they blew a 13-0 lead. Johnny Hector added a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Pat Leahy had field goals of 35, 36, and 26 yards. While the Jets took a 10-0 half-time lead thanks to Seattle mis-cues, the Seahawks capitalized on Townsell's blunder to get back into the game.

After Townsell al-' lowed Rodriguez's punt to bounce, he tried to grab it at the New York 15 and was hit by Sam Merriman. The ball popped loose and was recovered by Keith Butler at the 3. Curt Warner scored on the next play. The Jets couldn't move and, after a short Dave Jennings punt and a 13-yard return by David Hollis, Dave Krieg passed 28 yards to Steve Largent for the touchdown and a 14-13 lead. But the Jets, who are 6-0 on Monday night home games, came right back, driving 82 yards in 11 plays.

On first down from the 30, O'Brien handed to Roger Vick, who pitched back to the quarterback. O'Brien couldn't find anyone open deep, then shoveled the ball to Freeman McNeil, who went 26 yards. Griggs scored on a 5-yard flare pass. 90 69 2 lr I Pet PF PA Buffalo 4 4 0 .500 143 197 Indianapolis 4 4 0 500 153 119 Miami 4 4 0 .500 223 171 New England 4 4 0 500 149 1 88 NY. A 13-2 spurt at the start of the second half gave the Celtics, 3-0, a 67-42 lead with 7:30 left in the third period. The Knicks, 0-3, who shot 39 percent from the field in the first half and then missed sev was only 5-for-18 from the field. Trent Tucker and Mark Jackson added 12 points apiece for the Knicks. Bird had six points during a 14-2 spurt that gave Boston a 30-15 lead in the first quarter, and the Celtics extended the margin to 38-21 by scoring the first six points of the second period. Gerald Wilkins scored all of his 10 points in the last nine minutes of the quarter, but New York got no closer than nine points the rest of the first half.

en of their first eight shots in the third quarter, appeared incapable of mounting a rally. But with Patrick Ewing scoring 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, New York got as close as seven points twice, the last time at 87-80 with 13:13 left in the game. Then, a three-point play by Ainge with 1:47 to go built the margin to 90-80. He then went to blacksmith school in Oklahoma City, in 1982. "My dad said he would pay for it and I went," Voss said. "I was too big at the time to ride and enjoyed staying in the horse racing business. The last horse I was shooing kicked me and I said 'to heck with In his youth, Voss rode at numerous match tracks in Louisiana and Mississippi before finally settling on a career as a thoroughbred race horse jockey. He won two races in Louisiana before heading to Charles Town in 1983.

"When I first came here in August of 1983, my goals were to be the leading rider and win some nice stakes races. I accomplished that," Voss said. In 1984, he was one of the leading apprentice riders in the United States in a class headed by Chris Antley, and rode primarily in 1985 and 1986 for trainer Bobby Hilton. He reached the winner's circle on the first horse he rode at Charles Town and the last horse he rode at the track. "I was the top rider three years in a row and won the Tri-State Futurity in 1985, the Arch Rival, the West Virginia Futurity and also won a nice filly stakes race on Why Jan.

I rode that horse twice and won with her both times," he said. ny Voss, a leading rider at the Charles Town Race Track the past four years, is trading his whip for a spatula. "I'm going back to school, taking a cooking class at Delgado College in New Orleans," the soft-spoken Voss said before leaving Charles Town, W. Va. "You usually only get one chance to go to school.

Here I'm getting a second opportunity. The race track isn't going anywhere. I can always come back." Voss, 23, who spends numerous hours in the kitchen when he's home, was the leading rider at the track in 1984, 1985 and 1986 and was again competitive this year. His friends call him a mean cook.
