Ex-Lawmaker 'Sammy' Downs Dies Public Agenda Former state legislator Crawford H. "Sammy" Downs, 73, of Alexandria died at 1 a m. Tuesday in Rapides General Hospital. Downs was elected state representative for Rapides Parish in 1944 He was elected to the state Senate in 1948 and again in 1956. He served as executive counsel to then-Gov.

John J. McKeithen, 1969- 70, and was director of state Department of Public Works, 1970- 72. He was a member of the Alexandria Bar Association and had practiced law in Alexandria since 1946. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1932 from Louisiana College and was president of the senior class, 1931-32. In 1933, Downs received a master's degree from Louisiana State University.

He earned his law degree from LSU in 1946. He taught school and coached athletics at Glenmora High School from 1939 to 1944 and was principal of Cheneyville High School from 193944. In 1941. he was elected president of the Lou isiana State Teachers' Association. He served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Pine-ville, the Board of Directors of Alexandria-Pineville Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church, Pineville.

Services for Downs will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Hixson Bros. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Laura Eskew Downs of Alexandria; two daughters, Ellarene D. Low-ery of Baton Rouge and Ann D.

Robertson of Alexandria; one stepdaughter, Laurna E. Corneli-son of Alexandria; one son, James C. Downs of Alexandria; one stepson, John E. Campbell of Alexandria; two sisters. Ruby Downs and Zola Penny, both of Alexandria; one brother.

Rising seniors need a minimum 3.0 grade-point-average in academic subjects and a letter of recommendation from their principals or guidance counselors to qualify.

Aubrey Temple Sr. LEESVILLE Services for Aubrey Temple Sr. were at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Beauregard with the Revs. M.C.

Green and David Tipton officiating. Burial was in Welcome Cemetery, Simpson. Temple, 75, of Leesville died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in Byrd Memorial Hospital. He was a retired trucking contractor.
