SECTION PAGE SEVEN ALEXANDRIA DAILY TOWN TALK, ALEXANDRIA-PINEVILLE, THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1967 Television in Review Display Space Sculptor Has Unique Problem By Rick Du Brow HOLLYWOOD (UPI) The shape of network television programming continued to change in the past year. With "Good Day." There were also the two Jack Paar specials, 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Hollywood," and a movies and specials the main interest, most of the dreadful entertainment series that used By Jean Heller NEW YORK (AP) When sculptor Les Levine creates a new work of art, he also creates a problem. Like where to put it. Take, for instance, the few very enjoyable "Hallmark square-foot sea of plastic bubbles Levine blew into the Museum of Modern Art. It took practically an entire outdoor terrace to set it up.

And it was a big terrace. Now the exhibit is over and the bubbles have to go. But where? One iust doesn't set up to get top billing were reduced to the status of mere filler. Thanks chiefly to the specials. I square feet of plastic bubbles in Up to A If i- st ifC 1 V'" 4 5 I 1' f4 i 4h 4 1 r.

Since they're seven feet high, they don't hang easily from a studio wall. One-Man Show Luckily, Levine got a one-man show at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis so he doesn't have to worry about where to put his bubbles until that's over. The bubbles are being shipped bv truck. I'd really like to do is sell the work," the 31-year-old sculptor said.

"But it might take some time because I'm asking $22,000 and there aren't a lot of people with that much money to spend or any place to put this. Not Worried "I'm not worried though. I'll just keep finding places to exhibit it until I find someone to buy it." Levine said he'd like to sell the piece to a large corporation to pep up the lobby of a big building. "A very big building," he added. 16 Half Bubbles The sculpture consists of 16 half bubbles made of acrylic plastic donated to the artist for his work by the American Cy-anamid Co.

A factory superheated the 16 sheets of plastic and blew them out with air to fit Levine's specifications. Walking through the bubbles is a physical rather than visual experience. The viewer tends to lose his sense of distance and proportion. "It's supposed to make people happy, that's all," Levine said. Up to Hall of Fame" dramas: "Anas-tasia" and "Barefoot in Athens." Outstanding As for outstanding individual performances, there was Hal Holbrook in "Mark Twain Tonight," and Alan Arkin in "The Love Song of Barney Kempinski," and Ingrid Bergman in "The Human Voice" on "Stage 67," and Geraldine Page in "A Christmas Memory" and also in "Barefoot in Athens." There were Jackie Gleason and Art Carney in their "Honeymooners" musicals.

There was Mr. Will B. Able as the amiable vaudeville-type giant in "Jack and the Beanstalk." And Cliff Robertson in "The Trap of Solid Gold." There were Jo Van Fleet and Rank Langella in "Good Day." As for writing, one thinks of Truman Capote for "A Christmas Memory." and Murray Schisgal for "The Love Song of Barney Kempinski," and Harry Dolan for "Losers Weepers," and John Hawkes for "The Questions." In the field of public affairs, NBC-TV had "The Angry Voices of Watts," Ted Yates' three- it was a better year than the previous one. There were even some series, admittedly of an unusual nature, that one could view with frequent admiration "ABC Stage 67," "NBC Experiment in Television" and "The Telephone Hour" with its documentaries on the music world. Yet even all three series could fairly be regarded as collections of specials.

In the weekly grind of popular light fare, the Jackie Gleason show with Art Carney was a delight with its original musicals, and the Dean Martin series was also a source of enjoyment. Notable Theater Among individual theatrical productions of note, CBS-TV offered "Mark Twain Tonight," "The Crucible" and "Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music Part 2." It also presented a more than acceptable production of "The Glass Menagerie," as well as a splendid tongue-in-cheek musical version of "Jack and the Beanstalk." In addition to a fine 4,500 With up to 60 months to repay (AP Wirephoto) walking through the plastic bubbles is supposed to make the viewer happy. Levine has a problem: what to do with the bubbles after the exhibition tour. Sculptor Les Levine stands between two parts of his creation, a re-foot exhibit of seven foot-high plastic bubbles, at New York's Museum of Modern Art. I invented a phrase: To adaptation of "Brigadoon," ABC-TV came up with a fistful of outstanding hours in its "Stage 67" series: "A Christmas Memory," "The Love Song of Barney Kempinski," "Noon Wine," "The Trap of Solid Gold" and "Trilogy: The American Boy." NBC-TV, meanwhile, presented "The Investigation," as well as several top offerings, including "Experiment in Television" series: "Losers Weepers" and "When you have several little talents, you push 'em all together and somebody thinks you have a lot of them," Reiner remarked. "When you direct something you've written, it's like cooking your own eggs: there's the need to have it done your way. There may be a better way, but it's not your way." Piano Teacher Awards Grants (Special to The Town Talk) NATCHITOCHES, La.

Four piano scholarships to Northwestern State College have been awarded by Mrs. H. D. Dear, a private piano teacher in Alexandria. The Northwestern Department of Music held competition for the scholarships this week in the Fine Arts Little Theatre.

Contestants for the scholarships performed a 20-minute program from memory before a panel of five judges. Recipient of a $200 grant was Patsv Dupree of Bentley. Miss Dupree is a senior at Dry Prong High School and is a student of Mrs. Dear. Also receiving a $200 award was Linda Green, a Natchitoches High School senior and student of Miss Eleanor Brown.

Receiving $100 awards were Carol Richmond of Fair Park High school of Shreveport and Janet Ponder of Bossier City. Miss Richmond is a pupil of Mrs. T. W. Watson, and Miss Ponder studies under Mrs.

Vivian Misso. All of the award winners will enroll at Northwestern as music majors in piano either this summer or in the fall. This is the fourth year that Mrs. Dear has provided piano scholarships to students enrolling at Northwestern. 12 KATC Ch.

3 Cable Channel 3 KSLA Ch. Tonight By Gene Handsaker I HOLLYWOOD (AP) Actor, writer, director, producer one career merges into others in the make-believe world of show business. Shakespeare acted in his plays. Mike Nichols, Elia Kazan, Ida Lupino and Paul Hen-reid acted before becoming directors. Directors Gower Champion and Gene Kelly were dancers first, and Steve Allen is a comedian-musician-composer-author-panelist-emcee.

The foregoing profundities were cribbed from Carl Reiner, himself a comedian-actor-writer-director-producer. And which career does he like best? "Whatever I'm doing at the moment," said Reiner, who is 45, tall and bald, with luminous brown eyes and great energy. "Whether you write, direct or produce, it's still show business." At the moment he was writing a new play; planning to direct another he wrote, "Something Different," on Broadway next fall, and preparing to direct two more segments of "Good Morning World," a situation comedy being filmed for CBS-TV next fall. Where does he get his energy: "My work is my hobby." "The Russians are coming" movie audiences remember his hilarious scenes trussed back-to-back with a plump telephone operator.
