Missed been our foundation for the last Stachler said. seven games ot broken ribs. "He has four years," Cypress Lake coach Robert Coach: Menyhert Fogel, Barron Collier riDi s. Emily Merkle, Bishop Verot Sophomore, sweeper.

Selected as the Vikings' Most Valuable Player, assisted on 90 percent of goals. Patty Salvidar, Immokalee Sophomore, midfielder. Scored four goals in six games. Jay Neinas, Naples Lisa Berozsky, Lely fund raiser you could name," Lely coach Carl Rolling said. "Every school in the county played its part." The upgrading of girls soccer to varsity status in Collier County had a domino effect.

Since Bishop Verot and Lemon Bay already had established club programs, they decided to upgrade theirs, as well. Then came Buchik and Port Charlotte. And Immokalee, which never had fielded so much as a club team, but generated immediate support for a varsity program. "We had better crowds for the girls games than the boys," Immokalee athletic director Bobby Fowler said. "The addition of girls (soccer) did not create a burden.

The season went better than I expected." Each of Southwest Florida's seven teams averaged about 23 players. As the season unfolded, Barron Collier and Naples proved to be the area's dominant teams: Collier, led by senior center forward Chrissy Welsh, finished the season at 1 2-2-1. Welsh, the News-Press Player of the Year, led the team with 28 goals and three assists. Naples, meanwhile, finished at 14-3-1. The Golden Eagles reached the Class 3A, District 8 semifinals before losing to St.

Petersburg High. Welsh said the onset of varsity competition brought a noticeable difference. "It seemed like everyone played with a lot more incentive because of getting more recognition as a team sport," Welsh said. Naples managed victories over two of St. Petersburg's more established programs Catholic (twice) and Boca Ciega.

Despite its late start, Buchik and the Pirates proved successful, winning four of their six regular season games. Sixteen of Port Charlotte's 21 players participated in soccer for the first time. "All of the girls played with a lot of desire," said Tirb, who didn't have any prior experience coaching soccer until this season. "The girls felt they had something to prove, so they went out and proved it. Varsity girls soccer proved to be a success." Most coaches agree that scheduling would be a lot easier if Lee County's seven public schools fielded teams.

"I think every high school (in Southwest Florida) should have a girls soccer program," Lemon Bay coach Jeanette Karvis said. "We didn't have any problems. The girls wanted to learn and win." Senior, right halfback. Lely's top defensive player; had five assists. Chrissy Welsh, Barron Collier Senior, center forward.

The News-Press' Player ot the Year; Florida's top scorer with 28 goals. Senior, sweeper. One ot the fastest players In Southwest Florida, finished with nine goals and five assists. Neil Morgan, Barron Collier Senior, fullback. Guided the Cougars to a 16-4-2 record; had 12 assists and six goals.

Scott Elferdink, Barron Collier Senior, forward. Led Cougars In scoring with 18 goals, six assists. Marcus Ricciani, Cape Coral Senior, forward. The News-Press' Player of the Year; the top scorer in the area with 30 goals, 19 assists; powered the Seahawks to Class 4A, District 8 title by scoring In three games. Bonnie Rubin, Naples Senior, center forward.

The Naples' captain scored 20 goals and guided the Golden Eagles to a 14-3-1 record. Elli Sigmond, Naples Will Lukow, Cape Coral Barnwell swipes spot in record book Senior, goalkeeper. Key defender for the Golden Eagles but she also scored six goals playing midfielder. Kim Roll, Barron Collier Junior, stopper. Barron Collier coach Maria Ramsey said Roll did good job controlling the middle with her defensive play.

Amy Touchstone, Barron Collier Senior, right wing. She was second on the team with seven assists; Ramsey said she was one Barron Collier's most improved player. Shannon Lopez, Barron Collier Senior, left wing. Team-leader in assists with eight. Jorie Buchik, Port Charlotte Junior, forward.

Had 44 shots on goal, 25 steals and six goals. Senior, center half. Second-leading scorer, 25 goals and 25 assists. Michael Byrne, Bishop Verot Senior, forward. Scored three goals In Bishop Verot'a 4-2 victory over North Palm Beach Benjamin in the Class 2A, Region VI game; finished the season with 13 goals.

Grayson Gwaltney, Fort Myers Junior, forward. Played only eight games because ot ankle injury, but still finished with 12 goals; last year, scored 21 goals. Chad Conley, Evangelical Christian Senior, goalkeeper. Set a school-record with 42 saves against Tampa Prep; averaged 15 saves a game. Matthew Youngblood, North Fort Myers Senior, halfback.

Led the Red Knights with 10 goals and five assists. Aleks Lazic, Port Charlotte Armantha Butler, center forward. Led Lely with 16 Denise DiSalvo, Freshman, years. Junior, center half. Scored 28 step lead from the bag and read the pitcher," Barnwell said.

He has 37 consecutive steals without getting picked off. The Sentinels will play Moore Haven at 4 p.m. today in a second-round game of the Class District 11 tournament at Golden Gate Park. The boys' District 10 high school golf tournament begins at 10 this morning at The Vineyards in Naples. Riverdale will be one of the favorites.

The Raiders won the Sub-District 10 tournament at Mirror Lakes, defeating Cape Coral by six strokes. Riverdale is led by Danny Glod. He shot a 78 to finish tied for fifth in the overall individual standings in the sub-district. "We weren't aware that Chip was near a record until the Moore Haven coach mentioned it before Monday's game," Evangelical Christian coach Douglas Roed-dingsaid. "It feels great, I never imagined something like this," Barnwell said.

"I hope we play enough games so I can get the national record." Barnwell, who has been successful on 61 of 63 attempts, is batting .375 with an on-base percentage of .622. Barnwell's best performance this season was seven stolen bases against Tampa Riverhills Christian. He has had 14 games where he has stolen three or more bases. "I try to take at least a seven- By JOHN REID News-Press Staff Writer Chip Barnwell did not know he was nearing a state record. Neither did his coach.

But when the Evangelical Christian senior second baseman swiped his fourth base in last Monday's 18-1 victory over Moore Haven, he moved into the state record books.
