9 'NEWS-PRESS GULF COASTING, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1988 Everything you always wanted to know about 8 Tough Frm paae $700 million in rentals. The film's box-office take in North America is $228 million. The No. 2 moneymaker, both domestically and internationally, is "Star Wars" (1977). Some 240 million cinemagoers have seen "E.T." Sales of Reese's Pieces, a peanut butter and chocolate candy, soared by 85 percent after its appearance in "E.T." The shortest adult performer in movies is one of the actors who played the character of E.T.

The main scene for 2-foot-7-inch actress Tamara de Treaux is where E.T. shuffles back into his spacecraft for the voyage home. Even 7-year-old co-star Drew Barrymore towered over de Treaux by 1 7 inches. Censors in Sweden banned "E.T." for children younger than 11, claiming the film showed parents being hostile to their offspring. From News-Press Wire Services "E.T" is the video chart champ, topping both Billboard magazine charts rentals and sales (see Top Tapes, page 8), which measure sales to retailers and distributors.

The sales chart dominance may last many months, but "E.T.'s" rental reign should be relatively brief. In a few weeks, the cute little alien could be booted out of top spot by another cuddly creature the infant in "Three Men and a Baby." Here is some "E.T." trivia, compiled from "The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Figures" (1988, Guinness Books). "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) is the all-time box-office hit, with an international take of some Rate in the Best buddies By now, you have probably decided to buy a trained Doberman, install a burglar alarm system and mount those heavy-duty security blinds on all your windows. Well, relax.

We still have three more films to go, and they are all essentially comedies. Actually, they are the weirdest of all the police genres: The Buddy Movie. "48 HRS." (Paramount, 1982) is the best of the lot. Directed by Walter Hill, it stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte with Annette O'Toole and James Remar. They should have broken the mold after this one, but they didn't because it made so much money and you know how Hollywood loves a winner.

"Lethal Weapon" (Warner, 1987) probably could have stood on its own without the buddy premise, but it is well worth watching anyhow. Directed by Richard Donner, it stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover with Gary Busey featured as a white-haired lunatic killer. "Stakeout" (Touchstone, 1987), directed by John Badham, is saved largely by the charm of its two stars, Richard Dreyfussand Emilio Este-vez. Madeline Stowe and Aidan Quinn gi ve strong supporting (Warner, 1 984) the hero cop is no longer fighting the system. Instead, he is wrestling with his own violent subconscious.

Directed by Richard Tuggle, "Tightrope" stars Clint Eastwood, Genevieve Bujold and Alison Eastwood. It is a good thriller and sets the stage for a genuinely scary little movie called "Manhunter" (Lorimar, 1986). Directed by Michael Mann, the fellow who brought us "Miami Vice," "Manhunter" takes us on a harrowing ride through the mind of a very psychotic killer. The hero of this tale is not too stable himself, and you find yourself wondering whether he will crack up before he manages to catch his man. Despite its narrow premise, "Manhunter" isan engrossing movie.

It is also loaded with grisly murders. "Manhunter" stars William Petersen and Kim Greist. "Robocop" (Orion, 1987) is another perversely violent movie. But there is something almost Messianic about its hero, who is brutally killed and then brought back to life (sort of) to continue the fight against evil. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, "Robocop" stars Peter Weller and Nancy Allen.

Set in the near future, it is strangely moving and very disturbing.
