Night and day. Hugh is the one who serves as host of NBC-TV's "Concentration" camp.

The popular game show involves memory and an electronic rebus and Mon day night the rebus rebusted into the nighttime schedule as a re placement for "Dante." The day time version of "Concentration" is better. in uie morning Downs runs things easily, as if conducting a quiet, cheerfully informal neigh borhood pitch-penny contest. He speaks softly smiles modestly, is matter-of-fact, unhokey and easy to take. The basic game is a good one and it, too, is modest, unhokey and easy to take. It also has the advantage of enabling viewers to play right along with the contestants, although without tangible reward.

For its nighttime debut, however, "Concentration" came on like Milton Berle. We heard enraptured off-stage shouts from an announcer, saw flashy "his-and-her" automobiles being held out as prizes, bracketed by models. Brassy fanfares, thunderous drum rolls and a full orchestra added to the din. "Concentration" had sold out to the showmanship that Is cynical and blunt. And Hugh Downs played right along with this switch in emphasis.

He met the shouts of the audience with overdone enthusiasm. No longer calm, cool and collected, he was now submerging his personality and giving a bad im- mitation of a TV happiness boy. His play-by-play commentary came at machinegun-speed. In addition, the bigger nighttime budget also has altered the game. There seem to be more "forfeit 1 gift" squares on the board.

Whoever sold Downs on the idea of behaving the way he did presumably on the theory that nighttime game shows should be louder because louder is better should remember the name of the show. It's "Concentration," not "Detonation." Dialing and Filing: "Surfside 6," the show with the lady-chasing private eyes who we sometimes call the "Broadside 3," dunked its ABC-TV hour into a swampland of silliness Monday night. It's a sick show anyway you look at it. "The Americans" on NBC-TV was successful in attracting Patricia Barry and Charles Bickford for guest roles Monday night. And that's where its success ended.

At one point in the story. Miss Barry asked her pappy, Bickford, "Why did you dig this?" Did they really talk that way during the Civil War, dad? Actually, she was referring to a grave. But I still didn't dig the episode. Th Channel Swim: "Are labor unions too powerful?" By Harry Ferguson JERUSALEM (UPH A voice from the grave today called Adolf Eichmann a "coward" eager to kill Jews, but too timid to make a move until he had the approval of his superior officers. The third week of the trial of the man accused of exterminating six million Jews opened with the reading of an affadavit made by a one-time friend and colleague of Eichmann's in Adolf Hitler's elite SS corps Dieter Wisliceny. He was hanged as a war criminal in 1947 and made this statement in return for a promise that his family would be protected. Wislinceny once wrote a glowing recommendation for Eichmann's promotion and they were amiable collaborators.

But somewhere along the line the beautiful friendship came to an end. The allies caught Wislincenv. Eich mann eluded them. "It is this liberty and equality for the individual which distin-! guisnes our system of govern ment from communism; tinder which millions of people are liv ing in slavery and without laws and courts the freedoms we often take for granted would be mean ingless.

"This important truth is to be recognized publicly in a nation wide observance of Law Day U. S.
