Quarterback Hoffis Brent marched Grambling State 73 yards in the final 1:07, hitting running back James Robinson with a 20-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play to lift the Tigers to 7-7 tie with Tennessee State Univeristy Saturday night. Brent took only four plays to move Grambling into striking position at the TSU 20-yard line before spot- tmg Robinson open in the sou a uivijlg gidu tuviiy luiii juai auuaj uic uiuc a goal line. The tie gives the Southwestern Athletic Confere-nece Tigers a 3-1-1 record and independent Tennessee State a 4-1-1 mark. Tennessee State came into the game ranked eighth in the NCAA Divison I-AA poll, while Grambling was rated 14th. Tennessee State had taken a 7-0 lead with 3:46 remaining the first quarter when tailback Herman Hunter capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge.

TSU's Carlos Jones kicked the point after which was matched by Grambling's Jorge Rosales after time had expired. Prior to the Brent-to-Robinson connection, Grambling's deepest penetration had been to the Tennessee State 9-yard line where the Tiger's were stopped by a Brent fumble. The Tigers' defense prevented what would have been the winning touchdown when they threw Tennessee State running back Marlon Johnson for a 1-yard loss on a fourth-and-goal play at Grambling's 1-yard line midway through the third quarter. Southern University 21 Nicholls State 20 THIBODAUX, La. Herman Coleman passed for two touchdowns and ran for another Saturday night, but his late fumble almost cost Southern University its 21-20 football victory when Nicholls State missed on a two-point conversion with 1:02 remaining.

Coleman kept Southern one step ahead of Nicholls and foiled the Colonels' bid to upset the unbeaten Jaguars, who are tied for No. 14 among NCAA Divi- sion I-AA football powers Southern escaped with center of the filed. Robin- its 5-0 record intact, while 18 Nicholls feU to 2-3. Coleman passed 38 yards to Raymond Kyles for a touchdown in the first quarter, 20 yards to James Watts for another in the second quarter and ran four yards for Southern's other score in the fourth period. Nicholls came back with touchdowns of its own after each Southern score.

First, Keith Menard hit Curtis Hobbs for 29 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter, then Lynn Kennedy on a 60-yard bomb in the third period. Late in the fourth quarter and behind 21-14, Coleman fumbled at the Southern 37 and Errol Prince recovered for Nicholls. Backup Nicholls quarterback Doug Hudson then passed 33 yards to Hobbs and then three yards to Hobbs for the game's mal score. Sensing an upset, Nicholls went for the two-point conversion, but Hudson threw too low to Hobbs in the end zone. Coleman, who also threw two interceptions, finished with 12 completions in 25 pass attempts for 161 yards.

He also ran for 24 yards, but deferred in the rushing department to teammate Tony Good, who had 96 yards on 19 carries. Hobbs caught just four passes for Nicholls, but two went for touchdowns and another set up the last of his scores. Craighead ran for 79 yards on 19 carries. He hauled in the long pass from Indian quarterback Rodney Horn in the second quarter and scored his other TD midway through the final period. 9-ranked Division I-AA team jn the NCAA's Doll, improved its record to 3-0 in con ference and 4-1 overall. Lamar fell to 1-1 and 2-4. The winners scored in the second quarter on a safety as Lamar quarterback Rodney Clay's lateral went out of the end zone and on a 47-yard field goal by Jesse Garcia. Lamar had only two serious scoring threats. A Cardinal first-quarter drive ended when cornerback David Outley intercepted a Ray Campbell pass in the Indians' end zone.

The other Lamar opportunity was stopped on downs at the Indians 12 late in the first quarter. East Carolina 21 Southwest Louisiana REEN VILLE, N.C. Tony Baker rushed for two touchdowns and 108 yards, including 86 yards in the second half, to lead East Carolina to a 21-18 victory over Southwestern Louisiana Saturday in college football. East Carolina, 4-1, led 14-3 at the half but gave up three second-half fumbles, two resulting in Cajun touchdowns. But a 63-yard Pirate drive in the fourth quarter gave East Carolina the victory when Baker scored from 1 yard out.

SW Louisiana, 0-4, recovered a fumble early in the second half and launched a 57-yard drive that ended in fullback Thomas Jackson's 37-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds left in the third period. Backup quarterback Johnnie Schesniger hit Jackson in the end zone for the two-point conversion. The Pirates then fumbled at their own 36, setting up a 5-yard touchdown pass from Schesniger to tight end Zachary Dennis and giving SW Louisiana an 18-14 lead. East Carolina responded by taking the ensuing kickoff 63 yards, capped by Baker's 1-yard score. After stopping the Cajun offense and regaining the ball, East Carolina gave SW Louisiana one more chance when Baker fumbled.

But SW Louisiana was unable to move beyond its own 44.
