(AP) Mike Howard returned an intercepted pass 27 yards for a first quarter touchdown one of eight Southwestern Louisiana turnovers Saturday night to trigger Northeast Louisiana's 31-6 college football victory over the Ragin Cajuns. Center Paul Harris recovered a fumble by teammate Greg Huskey in the end zone for another Northeast touchdown in the first quarter, and the Indians ran up a 31-0 halftime lead on Rodney Horn's two touchdown passes to Chris Lott and Jesse Garcia's school record 53-yard field goal After a season-opening loss to Indiana State, Northeast evened its record at 1-1 with the victory over Southwestern, which was playing its first game of the 1983 season The victory avenged USL's 40-24 huiniliation of Northeast, whose Saturday night win evened the series with Southwestern at 13 victories apiece. The Cajuns helped beat themselves by throwing three interceptions, losing five of eight fumbles, and committing 10 penalties that cost them 111 yards. Southwestern did not score until the third quarter when Trinion Smith ran two yards for a touchdown. SMU 20, Grambling 13 Darrin Mitchell, a sophomore special teams player, made two key defensive plays in the fourth quarter to help the No.

15 Mustangs avoid an upset by ambitious Grambling. Mitchell recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown with 10:22 remaining to give the Mustangs a 17-6 lead. With 2:36 to play, Mitchell recovered a fumbled punt return by Grambling's Dwayne Jupiter at the Tigers' 10-yard-line. That set up SMU's final score a 25-yard field goal by Jeff Harrell with 55 seconds remaining. Jupiter caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Hollis Brent to cut the SMU lead to 17-13 with 7:08 left.

Grambling then held SMU on the next possession, but Jupiter fumbled the punt at the Tigers' 21 with 2:36 to play. Grambling scored first when Brent passed 27 yards to Calvin Nicholas at 10:28 of the first quarter. But SMU scored on its first two second quarter possessions to take a 10-6 halftime lead. Harrell cut the lead to 6-3 with a 27-yard field goal, then Gary Hashaway gave SMU the lead for good on a three-yard touchdown run with 4:10 remaining int he half. SMU is now 2-0 and Grambling, ranked eighth in Division I-AA, is 1-1.

The loss foiled Grambling Coach Eddie Robinson's bid for his 307th career' victory. With Bear Bryant's retirement and death last year, Robinson became the only active college coach with, 300 or more wins. 4 McNeese 23, Southeastern Buford Jordan ran for 117 yards and one touchdown, and Tony Whitting-' ton kicked field goals of 38, 36 and 28 yards. the ninth most productive runner iniCAA I-AA last, year, carried 26 times in powering a McNeese run-, ning game that ground out 231 yards to go with 98, yards through the air. McNeese, 2-0, also got a two-, yard touchdown run from Don Richards to go with its' attack.

Cowboy defenders, meanwhile, forced 11 Southeastern turnovers five interceptions and six fumbles as the host Lions fell to 0-2. New Mex St. 15, La. Tech 7 New Mexico State's opportunistic defense forced 10 Louisiana Tech turnovers and James Hebert added a fourth quarter touchdown run that insured the victory. Hebert's 3-yard run with 9:14 left in the game clinched the victory after NMSU had rallied from an early 7-0 deficit with a pair of field goals by Andy WeUer and a third period safety.

Weiler found the uprights from 37 and 23 yards. Louisiana Tech had taken a 7-0 lead on a 26-yard scoring pass from Kyle Gandy to Mike Sherman with 10 seconds left in the opening quarter. New Mexico State held the Bulldogs to minus 29 yards rushing. Gandy threw for 159 yards, but was also intercepted four times. The Aggies also recovered five Tech urn-, bles.

Southern 14, Alabama St 7 Herman Coleman threw for two touchdowns and Southern won despite, seven turnovers. Coleman threw a 33-yard pass to Cornell Swain with 9:09 remaining in the second quarter, four plays after Southern's defense recovered a hobbled snap on their own 19-yard line Southern struck again on the third play of the second half with Coleman tossing a 32-yard pass to Raymond Kyles. Alabama State scored with 2:21 remaining on a 5-yard pass from Anthony Scott to Bruce Porter-; field. In addition to the six fumbles and one intercept tion, Southern was penalized for 91 yards. "We were our own worst enemy," said Southern Coach Otis Washington.

Houston, which lost to the Hurricane for the fourth straight time, took an early 7-0 lead on Wilson's one-yard run but Davis booted field goals of 21, 27 and 32 yards to give the Hurricane a 9-7 halftime lead. Houston's offense fizzled in the third quarter with only 23 total yards while Miami widened its lead with a 13 points including a one-yard dive by Speedy Neal and Kosar's eight-yard pass to tight end Glenn Dennison.
