PAINTtS-O. biTSAlOa es m-EHlUR' BBOOHSBXRM Li. 014t DEATHS Upper Marlboro, Md- June 19 CP) Volume of sales was light on the Southern Maryland auction tobacco market today. The Federal State Market News Service reports average prices by grade were generally steady to weaker as compared with Monday. Bidding was less active for most offerings of heavy crop, which had shown some strength the day Principal marketings were fair for low heavy crop, seconds and tips and low to good thin crop.

Average Tobacco Price Net sales at auction Monday totaled 435,667 pounds and averaged $48.79 per hundred. This average was $2.27 higher than last Friday's. Season sales were brought to pounds for an average of $50.71. Auction bid averages per hundred pounds on a limited number of representative United States grades were as follows: Description Grade Prices Heavy Crop-Good cherry-red B3P $72 Fair cherry-red. This compared with an increase of $57,000,000 in such deposits in April of this year and a rise of in May last year. Carl G. Freese, president of the association and head of the Con necticut Savings Bank of New Haven, said that May was the first month this year in which deposit gains surpassed those for the corresponding month of 1950. "Indications that the public are becoming increasingly aware of the folly of wasteful, unnecessary spending at high prices and of the advantages to be gained by putting away today's easy-to-get dollars until prices level off and their dollars grow in purchasing power is evi denced by the substantial gams shown in mutual savings banks' de posits during the last three moriths," Mr.

Freese said. "If this trend continues, it can be a Vital force in defeating inflation and in strengthening the national economy." Insurance Companies New York.
