The Greenwood Commonwealth Sunday, July 20, 2014 Page2B New high school in Holmes Major Leagues Wardell takes job in Leflore district By CALVIN STEVENS Sports Writer Holmes County Central High School in Lexington will now be the home of the Jaguars. Three of the high schools in Holmes County S.V Marshall, J.J. McClain and Wittiains-Sullivan have merged and will be housed at McClain's facilities in Lexington for the upcoming school year. Former S.V Marshall head football coach Rogrick Wardell, a Greenwood resident, is no longer in the school district. He will be teachingcoaching at Claudine Brown Elementary this school year.

"I'm off the highway and saving a lot of gas money," said Wardell, who served as head coach of Marshall for one season. "If better for me and my family. I have two small children, and I stayed on the road a good bit last year. "Ill still be working with young kids at Claudine Brown. IT1 miss the kids at Marshall.

I know several of my former players have been working out with their new team." Wardell said he's not sure who will serve as head coach of the Jaguars. He thought he was going to be an assistant coach, but several things transpired over the summer. "I had this opportunity to come back home and get off the road," said Wardell. "They are still trying to work out some kinks with the three schools. People are trying to make sure everything is fair to all three schools." Wardell said the Jaguars will not be eligible for the postseason because of the consolidation.

The football team will play McClain's schedule and still compete in Region 3-3A with Leflore County, East Side, Humphreys County, O'Bannon and Ruleville. Leflore County is not eligible for postseason play because of its lack of accreditation with the state's takeover of the Leflore County School District. Wardell said he understands the school will offer football, girls and boys basketball, cross-country, girls Softball and track field for girls and boys. He was told nine sports are a possibility in the future. He added that Luana Greer and Antwayn Patrick will serve as the girls and boys basketball coaches, respectively, for Holmes County Central High School.

Patrick led Marshall to a state 2A championship this past season, and Greer is a former player at Leflore County and has been at Marshall seven years. Wardell said that Marshall's campus will now be Marshall Middle School and Marshall Elementary School. The point guard will make about $1.2 million this season after being selected with the No. 24 overall pick in last month's draft. Obviously, it was never a question that Napier was going to get a deal, but he said actually signing the contract was a significant moment. "Growing up, this is what you want to do," said Napier, who sat out the summer finale against Cleveland.

Mirotic was acquired by Chicago on June 24, 2011, as part of a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves and played last with Spain's Real Madrid CF. Gasol, a 13-year veteran of the NBA, comes to Chicago after spending the past six-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

There were no takers. Uggla's frustrating, four-year tenure with the Braves ended Friday when the team requested unconditional release waivers on a former starter still guaranteed over $18 million for the remainder of this year and next.

In his fourth season with the Braves, the 34-year-old Uggla was batting .162 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 48 games and 130 at-bats. He had a 33-game hitting streak in 2011, the franchise's second-longest, but also struck out 495 times in 451 games over the last three years.
