"The man was a genius. He had the brains and guts to do something nobody had done before," said a longtime friend, City Councilman Johnny Goyen. Hofheinz, a former legislator and county judge, apparently suffered a heart attack at his home, said paramedic Gilbert Bennett. He was taken by ambulance to Twelve Oaks Hospital and pronounced dead at 1 1:25 p.m.

Sunday. He had been confined to a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in May 1970. Mayor Kathy Whitmire on Monday ordered that flags at city buildings fly at half staff until Hofheinz is buried. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

"Judge Hofheinz was a man of great vision with a gift for turning dreams into reality," Mrs. Whitmire said. "His accomplishments as an elected public servant and a private citizen provide a legacy few will ever match." When Hofheinz first proposed a domed stadium for Houston, critics ridiculed the idea as too expensive and unnecessary. "But this man could think through adversity and never give up," Goyen said. The $32 million Astrodome opened in 1965 and became the centerpiece of the $100 million Astrodomain that Hofheinz created.

The sports and convention complex included a $16 million amusement park called Astroworld, the Astroarena, and four hotels. FREE HEARING Roy Mark Hofheinz With the domed stadium, Hofheinz attracted Texas' first major league baseball team, renamed the Houston Astros after the dome opened. He later spent $10 million for the Ringling Bros, and Barnum Bailey Circus. His empire collapsed in the mid to late 1970s as the Astrodomain was burdened by high interest rates and became overextended. Hofheinz lived at the Astrodome for years in a 24-room residence behind the $2 million scoreboard.

The sixth-floor quarters, known as the Judge's Quarters, included a shooting gallery, bowling alley, swimming pool, chapel, movie theater and six-hole putting green. Hofheinz attended Rice University, the University of Houston and the now-defunct Houston Law School, receiving his law degree at age 19. newly developed methods of correction will help, even for those who have, been told in the past that a hearing aid would not help them.
