ThoTinws MIRKYF.mRT-nOSMl Sent. 12, 1082 HM SMU's Pony Express mauls Green Wave, 51-7 By JIM McLAIN was just a great team effort what a way to break in I never thought them." Dupard, who was recruited by Tulane, said, "I didn't expect a lot of playing time, but I felt I had a good game." Dupard finished as the Ponies' No. 3 rusher with 65 yards on Just four carries. "Dupard will be a great player, too," said Gibson of SMU's third string tailback. SMU Coach Bobby Collins, who came to SMU from Southern Mississippi after Ron Meyer left to join the National Football League, said, "It we a nave a night like this one." Dickerson became the second SMU player and the eighth in Southwest Conference history to gain over 3,000 yards in a career.

It was SMU's 10th consecutive opening victory. The Mustangs are now 3-4 against Tulane in their all-time series. The victory was a costly one as SMU lost starting fullback Charles Drayton with a broken right leg in the third quarter. 100 yards for Dickerson, the bespectacled 217-pounder from Scaly, Texas. James went over the century mark for the 12th time and it was the fourth straight game the pair had each exceeded 100 yards rushing.

"They're both great players." said Gibson, whose Wave was suffering Its second loss of the season. The SMU avalanche started early with James streaking 42 yards for atouchdown on the Ponies' first possession of the first quarter. Later in the quarter SMU took advantage of a 30-yard Wave punt to launch another drive. Dickerson climaxed this one with a 14-yard scoring jaunt with 13:58 remaining in the second quarter. A little later SMU quarterback Lance Mcllhenny, who finished with 57 yards on eight carries and completed five of his eight passes for 65 more, scored his first collegiate touchdown, going eight yards on an option play.

Before the half ended Jeff Harrell, who kicked six of seven extra point tries, added a 33-yard field goal as SMU went in with a 24-0 lead. SMU upped its advantage to 31-0 with 5:15 left in the third quarter when Dickerson broke loose for 25 Timet Sports Writer IRVING, Texas The Pony Express used to carry the mall through the western territories, but Saturday night's Southern Methodist version delivered a big package of humiliation to Vince Gibson and his Tulane Green Wave. The No. 6-ranked Mustangs, paced by their "Pony Express" tandem of tailbacks Eric Dickerson and Craig James, blew the Wave out of Texas Stadium, 51-7. Dickerson gained 183 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns and James had 110 on 16 lugs and scored once as the Ponies broke the school rushing record with 519 and handed the Wave its worst defeat since a 54-7 licking at the hands of Houston way back in 1968.

"We got embarrassed by a great football team," said Vegas Vince. "I questioned SMU's offensive line before the game, but they were tremendous. "I've never seen anything like Dickerson and James. We tried everything to stop them, but we couldn't," he said. It was the 19th career outing over period before Sterling Wilson added the final insult by running in an interception of a Bubba Brister pass from seven yards out.

The Wave's lone touchdown came on a one-yard dive by Elton Veals with 7:54 left in the game. Tulane, which finished with only 16 yards rushing, was led by Veals 19 yards on eight carries. McKay completed 14 of 23 for 116 yards and one interception, but was sacked five times. Wide receiver Robert Griffin was one of the few Wave stickouts with eight catches for 80 yards. Wayne Smith caught five for 54.

"My defense has been pitiful and I don't know why," said Gibson. "But I'm not down on the kids, they never gave up. We just got physically beat by a great football team. It's really kind of scary." "I knew they would be hard," said McKay, "But I didn't think they would swarm around the ball carrier as much as they did. They were everywhere tonight.

If they keep playing like that there is nobody that can beat UTA romps, 63-10 ARLINGTON, Texas (UPI) -Quarterback Shane Giese threw four touchdown passes Saturday night as the University of Texas at Arlington rolled up 543 yards total offense and set a school scoring record by wiping out Sam Houston State, 63-10. Mavericks quarterback Danny Jackson tossed another three touchdowns, and backup Kraig Hopkins had one. UTA never trailed, enjoying a 42-3 lead at halftime en route to the record for most points scored in a single game. Sam Houston halfback Roger Wiley was the game's leading rusher, carrying the ball 23 times for 178 yards. Sam Houston had 283 yards total offense.

yards around left end. Then Tulane muffed two great op- firtunities to get back in the game, immie McCray handed the Grecnies the first opportunity when he raced the kickoff back 65 yards to the SMU 26. But, new quarterback Wade Elmore, who replaced starter Mike McKay, couldn't get anything going and Tony Wood was wide left on a 44-yard field goal attempt. Next, Bennie Burst, who broke through to block two punts in Tulane's 48-7 season-ending win over LSU last year, knocked down James' punt, giving the Wave a first down on the Ponies' 1 1, but Elmore was sacked for a loss back to the 23 by Richard Neely and a fourth down pass off a field goal formation thrown by holder Vince Manalla failed to gain enough for the first down. The rout continued even with the SMU reserves in the game.

Freshman tailback Reggie Dupard from New Orleans' John Curtis High tallied on runs of three and 46 yards in the final Arizona St. wins TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Fullback Dwaine "Tex" Wright and quarterback Todd Hons each scored on one-yard runs in the second half as 15th-ranked Arizona State came from behind to beat Utah 23-10 in non-conference football Saturday night. Arizona State, now 2-0, trailed its former Western Athletic Conference rival 10-6 at half time before rebounding to hand the Utes their first loss in two games. Wright's touchdown run 2:27 into the third quarter was set up by Sun Devil safety Paul Moyer's interception and 36-yard return to the Utah 12.

Hons added his one-yard scoring run with 5:32 left in the fourth quarter for a 20-10 lead. Sophomore Sun Devil place kicker Luis Zendejas then kicked his third field goal of the game from 27 yards out with 2:28 remaining to close out the scoring. ef ense leads NLU I Cook's fii'SL nL- Marine 1801 S. THIBODAUX -Northeast Louisiana's defense, usually overshadowed, outscored the pffense and led the Indians to a 29-14 victory over Nicholls State Saturday night. The Indians' defensive end Glenn Egan recovered a fumble in the end zone, Keith Sims returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown and defensive back Earnest Smith forced a safety. And those plays combined with the extra points gave the defense 16 points. For a while it looked as if neither the Northeast offense nor the defense could score any points as the Indians squandered two golden scoring opportunities in the first half before finally cashing in in the final minutes when John Holman hit fullback Feotis Moore down the middle for 20 yards and a score with 42 seconds left. Scott Martin's kick made it 7-0 at intermission and then Martin put the Tribe ahead by three more early in the third period when he booted a 22-yard field goal following the kickoff and Northeast drive.

Then the defense went to work. Nicholls punter David Fuhrer, back to punt with the ball on the Nicholls' 26, got a bad snap and tried to run with it and then fumbled in the end zone and Egan, a former Captain Shreve star, fell on the ball and the resulting extra point made it 17-0. Martin, another Shreve product, hit another field goal late in the third period, this one from 32 yards, to make it 20-0. After Dwayne Brown ran 1 yard for Nicholls' first score on the first play of the fourth period, Northeast got its safety. Keith Menard, with the ball on the Nicholls' 15, went back to pass, was rushed heavily and fumbled.

The ball rolled out of the end zone, just ahead of Smith and several other Indians for a safety-Then Sims got his second interception touchdown of his career with 8:39 left in the period and Martin added the kick to give Northeast its 29th points. Nicholls scored again with 4:03 left when Menard passed 3 yards to Brian Stropolo. The game ended with the Indians on Nicholls' 10-yard line. "We played outstanding football on defense," said NLU coach Pat Collins. "That was the difference in the game.

We played well at times, but you've got to give credit to the defense." The passing of Holman provided nearly all of the Indians' offense. The Tribe quarterback hit 16 of 35 passes for 263 yards and one touchdown.
