Pane 0 Section 111 Sun-Standard Newspapers, Thursday. Juno 21, Blame unemployment for deficits Ron (Tinley Park), the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 4th district, believes that unemployment is mainly responsible for the current budget deficits. Rodger, who is degreed in history and economics, said, "High unemployment under the Nixon-Ford administration has resulted in a cumulative unemployment deficit of $235 billion. "Had the economy been operating at full employment over the past eight years, we would have accumulated a surplus of $10 billion in the federal budget. Instead, Republican economic policies which accept high levels of unemployment have produced an eight-year deficit of $235 billion." Since 1970 official unemployment figures averaged 6 per cent; over the last 17 months unemployment has Russo wires Ford on storm damage Good finish Congressman Marty Russo (left) and aide Charles Kre-twick recently stopped by the Calumet Park Recreation center to congratulate Coach Terry Riley (right) and his basketball team for their first place finish in the Recreation center basketball league.

The Russo-Krezwick sponsored team came to life in the playoffs by beating the Calumet Park Trustees to capture the championship. Food stamp coalition stays active in area In Washington, third district Congressman Marty Russo said he has sent a telegram to the President concerning the week-end flood and tornado damage in Cook county and DuPage county. In the telegram, Russo requested that the President designate the two counties as federal disaster areas, thereby making them eligible for federal assistance under the Disaster Relief act of 1974 "This federal assistance is i a commpnted. "In the 3rd congressional district alone, over 10,000 homes were affected. In Oak Lawn, 7,500 homes were affected by flooding and at least one- half million dollars in damage ocurred at the Oak Lawn Village hall." been as high as 9 per cent and never lower than 7 per cent.

Rodger said, "the cost in unemployment alone is $20 billion this year. Over our 200 year history the Federal Budget has doubled since 1969. The nation can not afford this continuation of economic shortsightedness." Rodger outlined how unemployment created budget deficits by saying, "as people become unemployed tax revenues decline because these persons pay no income taxes. Likewise, federal, state and local expenditures rise automatically for programs such as unemployment compensation, food stamps and other income a i a programs. Together, declining revenues and increasing expenditures drive the federal budget into deficit.

"Every.l per cent of unemployment above full employment costs the taxpayers $17 billion $13 billion in lost taxes and 4 billion dollars in unemployment compensation and other income maintenance programs. "To stop this wastefulness of a potential and productivity we must end welfare and put America back to work." Rodger supports work programs as a replacement for welfare, unemployment compensation and income maintenance. "We need to increase our productivity and balance the budget. At present rates of unemployment there is a budget deficit of $50.8 billion At full employment of 4 per cent unemployment there would be a surplus of $4 billion. "Likewise, we would be serving the people better with increased services and strengthen the family unit, not to mention reduce the crime rate slightly.

I therefore, support a program of full employment in America and believe the economic indicators justify such a national initiative," Rodger concluded. The Chicago Metropolitan Food Stamp coalition is now in its fourth month of active outreach to the hungry in Chicago To date, the food stamp hotline has received over 12,000 calls from people requesting information on eligibility, Over 75 per cent of the callers to our hotline number, 6635470 appear to be eligible for the food stamp program The tremendous response to the "hotline" has demonstrated dramatically the need for this kind of outreach service. The Chicago Metropolitan Food Stamp coalition is determined to continue searching out even more of the nearly 300,000 people eligible for food stamps who do not receive them To meet this objective, the coalition has secured two staff co ordina- tors. Dons Ashbrook and Audrey Denecke, to devote full time to the outreach project Ms Ashbrook brings a rich and varied background which is particularly strong in techniques of community organizations. She has served as assistant director of county youth service in Wayne City, IN.

She has also directed a five county metropolitan task force on juvenile justice, organized a national lawyers guild and worked as a counseling director for half Step a veterans self help organization. Ms Denecke's history includes working in an open education experimental program in Round Lake, as well as major involvement in organizing for women's civil rights This latter interest led her to serve on the administrative staff at the national office of the National Organization fo Women, and to chair the Chicago N.O chapter's employment committee and legal advocate corps She will bring, in addition to her organizational knowledge, financial expertise, research skills and experience in public relations to the outreach position The arrival of additional staff will enable the coalition to intensify its efforts to find and assist the hungry of Chicago GOP leader lauds Huskey's role in bill Republican House Leader i i a Walsh (R-LaGrange) this week praised former state representative Herb Huskey for his role in stopping the controversial cement bill. Huskey, while a member of the legislature in 1974, said that the bill if passed would allow cement trucks to carry triple the weight load. "I took it upon myself to study the bill in detail and found out that three-fourths of the bridges in the state could not carry trucks of this size," Huskey said. "It was then that I talked to William Walsh who was majority leader and said that it seemtd strange that a labor leader who was a state rep would introduce a bill which would put hundreds of cement truck workers and drivers out of work," Huskey added Walsh, who is in Springfield this week, is the Republican leader in the house He said, "Huskey raised such an issue in committee that the bill was forced onto the floor where he again spoke against it and eventually tabled it and killed it." GOP leader Walsh this week said, "It is the mark of a good legislator that he is able to spot the bad bills and kill them." oTtQ Select groups of really real bargains! From regular stock!
