But even with four more plays the Wave was unable to score a touchdown and Murray hit a 32-yard field goal to give Tulane a 13-6 advantage. Early in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats got their first break after Tulane was called for pass interference in its own endzone and Cincy was set up on the Tulane 1.

After three unsuccessful tries, quarter back Art Bailey hit Tucker on a fourth down play. Shultz added the extra point to tie things up. That is until the final seconds of the game. With 6 minutes to play, Tulane began a drive on its own 20 and took it to the Cincy 33. The drive left the Green Wave stranded with a fourth down and only 55 seconds left to play.

Clarence Flowers scored two touchdowns for Mississippi Valley on passes of 17 and 35 yards from Lloyd Farmer. Williams completed 16-of-33 passes and was intercepted twice.

Grambling ran for 275 yards in 64 rushing while holding Mississippi Valley to minus-33 yards on the ground. Williams passed for three touchdowns including a 68-yarder on the first play of the game to set a college national record for career TD passes, leading Grambling to a 42-21 victory Saturday over Mississippi Valley State College. Williams, who passed for 324 yards, now has thrown for 73 TDs in 35 college games. He surpassed Greg Buzzell of Ottawa (Kan.) College, who held the previous mark with 72. Williams also became the all-time Louisiana college passing leader.

His total of 6,612 yards topped Terry Bradshaw, now of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who passed for 6,589 yards at Louisiana Prep Basketball Cincinnati's Curtiss Williams (25) tries to escape the grasp of Tulane's Jeff Gates (23) in early first half action Saturday night in the Superdome. Williams' run help set up a Cincinnati field goal. (UPI Telephoto) By Jeff Cowart Town Talk Correspondent NEW ORLEANS No Tulane fan would ever believe the old adage that 'fate has no favorite' after the Wave converted big breaks to lay a 16-13 loss on Cincinnati's Bearcats. Before a crowd of 22,546 in Louisiana's Superdome last night, the Greenies turned a basically lackluster grid performance into a win thanks to field goal kicker Ed Murray and mistakes by an equally hapless Ohio squad. Murray delighted the Greenie homecoming crowd with three straightaway hits of 51, 32 and 37 yards, tying a school record of 19 field goals in a career and setting a personal record on the 51-yarder.

Cincinnati led the statistics in virtually every offensive category except scoring. The Bearcats total yardage was 272 to Tulane's 174 but four fumble, losses and one pass interception compared to no turnovers for the Greenies made the difference in the contest. Marv Christian, who has been in a bit of a slump in his last two games, managed to break out of the mold in the second half and ended the night with 75 yards rushing and one touchdown. He was joined by Jeff Jones who added 48 yards to the Wave rushing totals. Williams Top Rusher The Bearcat's top rusher, Curtiss Williams, left the game with an injury in the second quarter after gaining 61 yards on 12 carries.

Gus Tucker, who replaced Williams, picked up the slack gaining 80 yards on 20 carries. Tommy Rightower and Bobbie Rodwig shared quarterbacking responsibilities for the Wave, filling in for the injured Roch Hontas who before being sidelined was ranked as the nation's 10th leading passer. Tulane had a less than stunning first quarter performance logging only 35 yards total offense. A Bearcat fumble deep in Green Wave territory set up the first points of the game. About midway through the period, Cincinnati had driven the Tulane 18 and was taking on an unstoppable look when Napolean Outlaw fumbled and the Wave recovered on their own 21.

Later in the second period, Cincinnati struck back with their own drive deep into Tulane turf. But, like the Wave, their effort fizzled on the Tulane 27 and kicker Steve Schultz his a 45-yard strike to even things up at 3-3. Just before the half, the Bearcats put together their first formidable assault going from their own 32 to the Tulane 10 before running out of time. Schultz took the field again and this time hit on a 27-yarder to give Cincinnati a halftime lead of 6-3. Things weren't so sluggish in the third quarter.

The Wave finally hit on a touchdown, and Murray kicked his second three-pointer of the night giving Tulane a 13-6 lead with just one period left to play. Long-Gain Runs The quarter was marred by several long-gain runs, the first such bursts of the evening and a little Tulane surprise. The touchdown came about midway in the quarter after Tulane took a punt from Cincy kicker Mike Con-nell on the Cat 46 for good field position. Running back Christian, finally picking up steam, highlighted the drive with a 23-yard jaunt and then finally bullied his way into the end-zone with 5: 01 left to give the Wave a 9-6 lead. Murray added the extra point.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Bearcats were once again victimized by bad luck losing a fumble to the Wave on the Cat 43. The Greenies took the ball to the Cincy 37 and when they were unable to move, Coach Larry Smith reached into the back pages of his playbook. With a fourth down and four situations, quarterback Rodwig took' his place under center and called off the signals. With a quick jerk, Rodwig shifted into a shotgun formation and the Bearcats jumped offside Cincy 0 6 0 713 Tulane 0 3 10 3-16 TU FG Murray 51 Cln FG Schulti 45 Cln FG Schulti 27 Tu Christian run (Murray kick) Tu FG Murray 32 Cln Tucker 1 pass from Bailey (Schultz kick) TU FG Murray 37 In the other boys game, Simpson downed Cloutierville behind the 17- point performance of Joey Bollinger. Kentucky Mauls LSU by 33-13 (Continued from Page B-l) first half (this one went 66 yards in 11 plays) with a keeper for one-yard and a score. The only long rushing gain of the night against LSU's defense was a 49-yarder by Richard Brooks in' which he swept left, darted down' field about five yards and then darted right all the way to the LSU 4. Two plays later Ramsey went over from the left side into that vul-j nerable right side of the LSU de-4 fense, which now included freshman linebacker Lyman White, sophomore defensive end Willie Gunnels and sophomore cornerback Willie Teal. Down 20-7, LSU marched from its own 18 to the Kentucky 29, in 13 plays. But on a fourth-and-7 at that point, McClendon elected to go for a field goal with only a few seconds left in the third quarter.

Conway's 45-yard attempt was blocked by noseguard Richard Jaffe and recovered by the legendary Artv Still, who outraced Ensminger to the opposite end zone. Ensminger untacked the Tigers offense early in the fourth quarter; and drove from the LSU 22 to the-Kentucky 23, where, on a third-andv 10, Ensminger was intercepted by; safety Dallas Owens, who returned it-" 81 yards for a touchdown. Kentucky, which scored on the last play of the first and third quarters, almost scored again on the final play of the game, but was stopped short. "They didn't do anything wrong tonight," LSU coach Charlie MC Clendon said of the Wildcats. "They ran straight at us." LSU ran straight at Kentucky too long.

Peoples Kicks McNeese Pokes Past Northeast MONROE, La Jon Peoples broke out of a slump and brought McNeese with him as he kicked three field goals to lead the Cowboys to a 29-7 victory over Northeast Saturday night. Peoples, 0-for-6 in field goals in the previous five games, made all of his attempts Saturday to tie a school record as the Cowboys snapped a three-game losing streak to even their record at 3-3. Northeast fell to 0-6. Peoples kicked a 37-yarder in the first period and then Harry Price capped a 69-yard march with a four-yard run for his first of two touchdowns, also in the first. There was no more scpring until the third period with NLU misfiring on a couple of threats.

Peoples upped the margin to 13-0 in the third with a 32-yard field goal before Northeast got on the board on the next-to-last play of the quarter when Greg Schaff cap-, ped a 78-yard drive with a one-yard smash. In the fourth, McNeese broke it open. First, Peoples kicked a 43-yar-der then two interceptions made it 29-7. Tommy Murphy, with Northeast at the Cowboy 36, intecepted a pass and ran it back 71 yards for a touchdown. Later in the period, Doug Fruge intercepted another and ran it back to the 29.

Eleven plays later, Price got his second TD on a one-yard run. NLU will meet Southeastern in homecoming next week. Term-Martin Rolls Past Nicholls 34-0 thibodaux, La. Carter 4 (Continued from Page B-l) with big plays. But it was a hopeless case Saturday night. Mac and his staff were so constantly running in subs, especially tackles and linebackers, it looked like MacArthur Drive traffic between Howard's and K-Mart. Nothing helped. The game wasn't a total loss, though.

Woodley came through in such fashion that Mac knows he still has a two-quarterback system. When Steve Ensminger could get nothing going, Woodley came on and manufactured a touchdown, thanks in part to some fancy tight-roping down the sidelines after the reception by Carlos Carson. And late in the game, Woodley personally scored another touchdown, to remove just a smear of the embarrassment. So, the Tigers have had their valleys and they've had their hills. And it will be back to the basics Monday afternoon, not to start all over, just to review and try to find another starting point.

Memphis St. Upsets Mississippi State MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Quarterback Lloyd Patterson struck for two first-half touchdowns and the Memphis State defense held on to upset Mississippi State 21-13 Saturday night in college football.

Fullback Eddie Hill, who rushed for 110 yards, gave the Tigers an insurance score on a 54-yard romp midway in the final period. Hill, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior, took a handoff from Patterson, cut to the center of the field and out-raced Bulldog defenders for the score. The Bulldogs, 3-3, went ahead 3-0 six minutes into the game on Dave Marler's 50-yard fieldgoal on Mississippi State's first possession.
