B-3 Town Talk. Alexanilria-Pincv illc. Sunday. October 16. 1977 Chapter Two in McEachern's fictional Ro kansas' football team, but Campbell and McEachern just played great." Campbell, who established an all-time SWC career rushing record, said, "they hit hard and they are a good, clean football team.

As far as the records and the Heisman Trophy, if it happens, it happens." Arkansas Coach Lou Holtz, said, "The screen pass to Campbell was a critical play. He made a great move on it. As it turned out, we should have been more wide open in the fourth quarter, but hindsight is always 20-20." McEachern, from Pasadena, completed passes of 14 yards to Ham Jones, 31-yards to Alfred Jackson and 28 yards to Campbell. Jones punched across from the one with 4: 31 to play to silence the rabid Razorback Stadium crowd of 44,296. The nationally televised game was strictly a cross-country field goal duel between Steve Little and Texas' Russell Erxleben until the last-ditch Long-horn drive.

FAYETTEV1LLE, Ark. (AP) -Scrappy Texas quarterback Randy McEachern wrote another amazing chapter to his almost fictional role as the leader of the nation's No. 2 ranked team with another clutch performance Saturday in a 13-9 victory over eighth-ranked Arkansas. "I was nervous all week, but we made the big plays when it counted," said McEachern, who burned the Ra.orbacks with three critical passes and pitched out the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter of the Southwest Conference football shootout between unbeaten teams. With Texas trailing 9-6, going against a blustery North wind and only eight minutes to play, McEachern came alive to ignite the Texas offense, which had consisted solely of Earl Campbell's thundering runs.

McEachern, a redshirt junior who has never lettered, took Texas 80 yards with 73 of them coming off his uncanny passing arm. Erxleben kicked field goals of 58 and 52 yards in the first period and Little retaliated with Howitzer shots of 33 and 67 yards in the second period to tie the game 6-6 at halftime. Little's 67-yarder tied the NCAA record held by Erxleben. Little kicked a chip shot 25-yard field goal to give Arkansas a 9-6 lead midway in the third quarter. Texas is now 5-0 over-all and 2-0 in SWC play while Arkansas is 4-1 and 1-1 in league play.

Campbell, the rough-house running senior tailback of the Longhorns, thundered 189 yards on 34 carries as he broke the school rushing record and the all-time SWC mark. Chris Gilbert, held the old Texas record and Campbell shattered Dickey Morton's ledger of 3.317 yards he established at Arkansas. Campbell now has 3,386 career yards. Texas almost fumbled the game away in the third period as Campbell lost the ball twice and Ham Jones coughed it up once. Arkansas drove to the Texas 12-yard line where Arkansas quarterback Run Calcagni faced a third-and-cight.

Calcagni was stopped on a rollout at the Texas eight-yard line and that was the closest Arkansas got to the Texas goal as the Razorbacks settled for Little's third field goal. Texas' Jimmy Johnson returned a punt 49 yards to the Arkansas 21-yard line early in the fourth period, but the swarming Razorback defense shot down the Texas offense at the 15. Erxleben then attempted a 33-yard field goal which would have tied the game, but the officials ruled it wide to the right Erxleben thought it was good and was visibly upset over the call. Little uncorked a 56-yard punt into the Texas end zone with 8:36 to go and then McEachern guided Texas downfield on a masterful 80-yard journey. The winning touchdown came on a one-yard run by Johnny "Ham" Jones, after McEachern had bootlegged the ball down the line of scrimmage.

The score was set up by a play Texas had not used all year, a 28-yard screen pass to Campbell. "We practiced the screen to Earl all this week and they (Razorbacks) were yelling reverse when I was cafling the signals at the line of scrimmage," said McEachern. McEachern, who projected his name into the national limelight when he came off the bench to lead Texas to a 13-6 victory over Oklahoma last week when the No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks were injured, said: "I was given the responsibility to read Arkansas defense on the winning touchdown.

"I faked to Earl and then their secondary came up for me and I just pitched to Ham who was wide open." Texas Coach Fred Akers said, "McEachern is a lays it on the line. The 40-yard drive took only two plays after Rutledge had connected with Newsome for 31 yards, setting up the score. The teams had swapped first-quarter field goals, a 20-yarder by Roger Chapman of Alabama and a 41-yard boot by Tennessee's Jim Gavior. It was the fourth straight SEC victory for Alabama, seeking its sixth title in seven years. The Tide is 5-1 over-all. Tennessee, which got its only touchdow on a 13-yard pass from Joe Hough to Kelsey Finch, fell to 2-4 over-all and 0-2 in the conference.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Jeff Rutledge scored two touchdowns and fired a 30-yard scoring pass to Ozzie Newsome as fourth-ranked Alabama downed Tennessee 24-10 Saturday in a Southeastern Conference football game. The Crimson Tide, whipping Tennessee for the seventh consecutive season, had numerous opportunities to turn the game into a rout, but six times failed to score after penetrating the Vol 35. Rutledge scored both of his touchdowns in the final three and one-half minutes of the first half when Alabama struck suddenly to break a 3-3 deadlock and take a 16-3 halftime lead. Rutledge's first score came on a four-yard run at the end of a 78-yard drive, and he came back with a nine-yard scoring trip with only 13 seconds remaining Tenn.

Linebacker Eddie Cole had recovered a fumble by Gamecock tailback Spencer Clark to start the third-quarter march. South Carolina rallied a few minutes later as quarterback Ron Bass flipped a short pass to Rogers and the fleet freshman broke away from a half dozen tacklers on a 72-yard sprint to the goal.

The Gamecocks drove 48 yards to the Ole Miss 4 on their next possession in their most sustained offensive showing, but the Rebel defense stiffened and South Carolina had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Britt Parrish. Ole Miss killed Carolina's final hopes with a time-consuming march late in the fourth quarter, which ended with a 29-yard field goal by Hoppy Langley. OXFORD, Miss. (AP) Fullback James Storey and tailback Freddie Williams broke through South Carolina's defenses for clutch touchdown runs Saturday to give Mississippi's Rebels a 17-10 football victory over the Gamecocks. Ole Miss capitalized on fumble recoveries to launch both of its touchdown drives drives in a game termed essential to the future of Rebel Coach Ken Cooper's job.

The Rebs got their first touchdown after South Carolina fullback George Rogers fumbled on the second play of the game and defensive back William Day recovered for Ole Miss at the Gamecock 33. It took only five plays for the touchdown that launched Ole Miss on the road to the upset triumph. Storey banged the final yard after teaming with quarterback Tim Ellis to account for 30 yards in four plays. (AP) -Quarterback Jeff Pyburn ran for two touchdowns and passed for another Saturday as Georgia defeated fumble-plagued Vanderbilt 24-13 in Southeastern Conference football.

Pyburn, a sophomore, scored on runs of four and 18 yards within the last 11:20 of the fourth quarter after Vanderbilt had led 13-10. It was the fourth victory in six games for the Bulldogs and their second in three SEC games. Vanderbilt, which skidded to its fourth straight loss, is 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Commodore fumbles led to gia's opening touchdown and go-ahead touchdown. Vanderbilt quarterback Mike Wright fumbled the ball away early in the fourth quarter at his 30-yard line, setting up Py-burn's first score of the final period six plays later.

The Bulldogs then trapped Vanderbilt deep in its territory before Georgia's Scott Woerner returned a punt to the Vanderbilt 18. Pyburn scored from the 18 two plays later for the final 24-13 margin. Senior running back Kevin McLee set a new career rushing record for Georgia on his first carry in the third quarter, an eight-yard run, after running for 32 yards in the first half. McLee, who gained 80 yards to raise his career total to 2,318 yards, broke Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich's mark of 2,271 yards. Pyburn threw a five-yard scoring pass to tight end Mark Hodge and Rex Robinson kicked a 33-yard field goal in the first period to give Georgia a 10-0 lead.

Wright's 28-yard scoring pass to tight end Hal Kemp and two field goals by Greg Martin, all in the second period accounted for Vander-bilt's scoring. Earl Campbell, Texas' premier running back, gets only short yardage on this play early in the game Saturday against Arkansas as Patrick Martin (24) makes the stop. Tech's only scoring in the second half came on Johnnie Smith's 33-yard field goal and Hill's 12-yard run. Auburn had a fourth period touchdown when Foster Christy scored on a 20-yard run with 3: 10 left to play.
