18.87 Wesley Cook: Radio reporter charged In killing of policeman, (UP I Photos) Policeman Slain; Radio Newsman Faces Charges PHILADELPHIA (AP) A policeman was shot to death before dawn Wednesday after stopping a car in the city's nightclub district, and a critically wounded radio reporter was charged with murder, authorities said. Officer Daniel Faulkner, 26, was mortally wounded when he was shot in the face after he stopped the car around 4 a.m. Faulkner had called for a backup unit as he prepared to make an arrest and apparently got off at least one shot before he was killed, said Police Commissioner Morton Solomon. "He never had a chance," said a visibly shaken Mayor William Green, who went to the hospital upon hearing of the shooting. The reporter, Wesley Cook, 27, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound in the chest, said Police Department spokesman Don Fair.

Also arrested was Cook's 25-year-old brother, William, according to Fair. He was charged with aggravated assault, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest, the spokesman said. Daniel Paul Alva, William Cook's attorney, said he understood that his client and Faulkner argued after Faulkner stopped William Cook's car. Police said Wesley Cook apparently approached the two men on foot a few minutes later, and then the shooting broke out. Wesley Cook had worked for several Philadelphia radio stations and was named as one of the "People to Watch in 1981" by Philadelphia magazine, which noted that his "always insightful interviews bring a special dimension to radio reporting." Wesley Cook used the name Mumia Abu-Jamal during broadcasts, officials said.

He was asked to resign last March from public radio station WUHY because of differences over editorial policy, said station news director Nick Peters. Faulkner died at Thomas Jefferson Hospital shortly after arriving there with multiple gunshot wounds, the hospital-said. Texas Refinery Blast Injures 21 Workers PORT ARTHUR, Texas (UPI) An explosion and flash fire Wednesday in a catalytic cracking unit at the Gulf Oil Co. refinery injured at least 21 people.
