Brown, 37-14 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Quarterback Peter Beatrice threw two touchdown passes and steered Brown University to a 37-14 shellacking of Columbia Saturday, giving the Bruins a 4-3-1 record and their best football season in 15 years.

Only once before has Brown had a winning season since the Ivy League was established in 1956. It matched this year's record in 1958. Kent 28-7 KENT, Ohio (AP) -Junior tailback Larry Poole ran for three touchdowns in leading Kent State to an easy 28-7 victory over Central Michigan in closing college football action for both Saturday. The Golden Flashes trailed only once during the rain-drenched game, and that after Poole went in for his first score in the opening quarter. An attempted pass on the conversion effort was blocked, and the Central Michigan's Dave Baginski scampered 13 yards into the end zone to cap an 85-yard drive less than two minutes into the second quarter.

A successful extra point attempt by Doug Lorenz gave the Chippewas a 7-6 lead. CANYON, Tex. (AP) -Converted defender Jim Wagoner returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown Saturday, sparking a fourth-quarter rally that helped Louisville post a 21-9 Missouri Valley Conference football victory over West Texas State. Iowa 28-12 AMES, Iowa (AP) -Freshman quarterback Buddy Hardeman passed for two touchdowns and was credited with a 74-yard touchdown run as Iowa State upset Big Eight Conference football foe Oklahoma State 28-12 Saturday. Hardeman was credited with a third-quarter touchdown run when Oklahoma State secondstring offensive guard Deacon Stephens came off the bench to make a sideline tackle at the Cowboy 35-yard line.

Cyclone Coach Earle Bruce and the entire Iowa State bench stormed on the field demanding that Hardeman be awarded a touchdown. The officials allowed the score and Tom Goedjen's third point after kick was good to make it 21- Wichita 28-19 WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -Wichita State scored three touchdowns in the second half, one of them after a pass interception and two on long drives, and upset Tulsa 28-19 Saturday in a crucial Missouri Valley Conference football game. Michigan 15-6 IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -Michigan State's defense, led by Otto Smith and Ray Nest-er, forced a safety and set up two scores Saturday as the Spartans downed winless Iowa 15-6 in a Big Ten Conference football finale. Iowa finished 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

For only the second time in 85 seasons the Hawkeyes failed to score a victory. Michigan State closed 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Iowa, a 10-point underdog, played strong defense the first half and trailed only 2-0 at intermission in the coaching final for Frank Lauterbur. W. Virginia, 24-14 SYRACUSE, N.Y.

(AP) -Quarterback Ben Williams ran for one touchdown and threw for another score in the first half, leading West Virginia to a 24-14 football victory over Syracuse Saturday. The loss spoiled retiring coach Ben Schwartzwalder's final game in his 25-year tenure at Syracuse. West Virginia, 6-5, took a 7-0 lead late in the first period on Williams' nine-yard run. (AP)-Safety MickeyEarly returned an intercepted pass 43 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to open the door for a 38-22 Southwest Conference victory for Southern Methodist over Baylor. Early broke 14-14 tie with his interception off Baylor quarterback Neal Jeffrey, who promptly had another pass intercepted on the bears, next series of downs. Andy Duvall swiped the second pass and returned it 11 yards to set up a nine-yard scoring run by quarterback Keith Bobo. S. Carolina, 32-20 COLUMBIA (AP) Quarterback Jeff Grantz scored two touchdowns, gained 183 yards rushing and picked apart the Clemson defense with his passing to lead South Carolina to a 32-20 football victory over its old intrastate rival Saturday afternoon.

The South Carolina triumph overshadowed great running performances by Clemson freshman Ken Calli-cutt and senior Smiley Sanders. Callicutt gained 122 yards on 18 carries, while Sanders scored three touchdowns on runs of six, two and 17 yards. Rice, 14-9 FORT WORTH, Tex. (AP) Rice's Carl Swierc streaked 99 yards on a kickoff return to wreck Texas Christian's final home appearance under ousted coach Billy Toh-ill and led the Owls to a 14-9 Southwest Conference triumph Saturday in a game delayed briefly by a fierce electrical storm. The Horned Frogs had pulled to within four points, 7-3, on Berl Simmons' 25-yard field goal in the fourth period when Swierc took the kickoff at the one, sped up the sideline, swung diagonally across field and outran everyone to the goal.

Duke, 27-10 DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -Quarterback Hal Spears scored two touchdowns as he led Duke to a 27-10 victory over archrival North Carolina Saturday to salvage some glory out of its worst football season in history. A crowd of 44,600 saw the Blue Devils explode for two touchdowns with a vicious last quarter attack to close the season with a 2-8-1 record. Duke's previous worst record was a 36-1 in 1969. For defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina it was the seventh loss against four victories, its worst record since 1968.

Kansas 17-14 BOULDER, Coo. (AP) -Kansas State marched from its own five-yard line to set up Keith Brumley's 30-yard field goal with five seconds remaining as the Wildcats upset Colorado 17-14 in a Big Eight football game Satur-: day. The Wildcats, who trailed 14-0 at the half, took advantage of an error-prone Colorado team by converting two Buffalo mistakes into second- half touchdowns. Colorado had a punt blocked on its first possession in the third quarter, and KSU's Les Chaves, who blocked the kick, recovered at the Colorado fouryard line. Two plays later, tailback Isaac Jackson scored from the two, but a two-point conversion failed.

Memphis 17-13 CINCINNATI (AP) -Freshman flanker Bobby Ward hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter and Hal McGeorge added a 23-yard field goal, rallying Memphis State University to a 17-13 football victory over the Cincinnati Saturday. The touchdown pass from halfback Dan Darby overcame a 13-7 Cincinnati lead built on field goals of 53 and 42 yards by Sicilian-born Sal Casola. The 53-yard field goal was the longest in Cincinnati history. Memphis State, 8-3 for the season, turned a Cincinnati fumble into a touchdown on the opening kickoff for a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. Seven minutes later, Ca-sola's long boot, which hit the crossbar and bounced over, made it 7-3.

Cincinnati marched from midfield late in the first quarter and scored on tailback Reggie Harrison's one-yard plunge minutes into the sec ond quarter for a 10-7 advantage. The touchdown was the 26th of Harrison's career-tying a 61-yearold school record. Harrison, Cincinnati's al-ltime leading rusher, pulled a hamstring and missed the second half. Casola, who attempted five long-range kicks, and had two blocked, put Cincinnati in front 13-7 with his 42-yard boot 10 seconds into the third quarter. Memphis State marched 80 yards in 10 plays early in the fourth quarter, tying the game on the Darby-to-Ward touchdown pass.

McGeorge's extra point put the Tigers in front 14-13 with 13:30 remaining. A fumble recovery by Memphis State's Ken In-emasek on Cincinnati's 11 set up McGeorge's short field goal. Minnesota, 19-17 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) Minnesota sprung Rick Upchurch loose on the pitchout option for 17 yards rushing and two touchdowns Saturday as the Gophers rallied and beat Wisconsin 19-17, taking third place in the Big Ten Conference football race. Upchurch, averaging about 12 yards a carry, zipped around end with pitchouts from John Lawing for touchdown runs of 16 and 14 yards.

His second touchdown in the third quarter wiped out a 10-6 Wisconsin lead. The Gophers finished 7-4 their best season since 1967, when they tied for the Big Ten title and had a 8-2 mark.
