(AP) Freshman quarterback John Fourcade lofted a 16-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Weathers and Hoppy Langley kicked two field goals to propel the Mississippi Rebels to a 13-3 football victory over Tulane on Saturday. Langley kicked field goals of 51 and 20 yards as the Rebels pushed their record to 4-5 and Tulane fell to 4-6. The Green Wave scored first in the opening quarter, on a 29-yard field goal by Ed Murray after quarterback Roch Hontas' 45-yard run to the Ole Miss 14.

Fourcade, splitting playing time with junior Roy Coleman, found Weathers in the corner of the end zone for the Rebels' only touchdown fumble at the 19. Coleman's pitchout went awry at 4th-and-three at the 17 and Langley missed a 49-yard field goal attempt after a drive stalled at the 35. Tulane had two second-half scoring threats. In the third quarter, the Greenies got to the Ole Miss 21 with the aid of a 15-yard penalty. But defensive end Bob Grefseng, nose guard James Jordan and defensive back Jerry Spore teamed on two sacks of Hontas, costing the Greenies 14 yards.

Murray then missed a 52-yard field goal attempt. In the final quarter a 34-yard pass from Nicky Hall to Marcus Anderson put Tulane on the Rebel 34 but Hall was sacked twice to kill the opportunity. with 29 seconds left in the first quarter. The-pass to the 6-foot-5 split end capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive kept alive by Fourcade's six-yard run on 4th and one to the 16. Langley kicked his 51-yarder at the halftime buzzer after the Rebels drove from their 33 on Fourcade's 12-and 16-yard passes to Ken Toler and Leon Perry's 6-yard sprint on fourth down to the Tulane 34.

Ole Miss defensive tackle John Johnson recovered a fumble by Tulane's Terry Harris at the Green Wave 21 to set up Langley's 20-yard field goal in the third quarter. Mississippi had three other scoring chances in the last half. One died when Tulane linebacker Marty Wetzel recovered a Fourcade Sloan Credited Rebels' Defense the Rebels' defensive performance, shutting down Tulane passer Roch Hontas, was "a new alignment and a new blitz." Tulane Coach Larry Smith said the Green Wave should have been able to throw when the Rebels brought their defensive backs on the rush, "but I guess we panicked or something, because we didn't." "Ole Miss did a good job changing those defenses and keeping us guessing," Smith said. "That's the story. It was that simple." He said Ole Miss "didn't do anything fancy they just beat us up front." Smith said the Tulane defense played well and "I couldn't be prouder of them, but you can't win if you don't score points.

Roch Hontas didn't have a lot of help today, but no one on our offense got a lot of help." Smith said Ole Miss noseguard James Jordan "hurt us all day" and dominated the middle of the line. "If our inside game had worked better, Ole Miss' firing the defensive backs wouldn't have hurt us as much." OXFORD, Miss. (AP) Mississippi Coach Steve Sloan credited the Rebel defense Saturday for a 13-3 football victory over the Tulane Green Wave. "There's no question our defense was the reason we won," Sloan said. "The day belonged to the defense.

"Offensively, it was a frustrating day. At times, we moved the ball very well. But we didn't seem to do the right things at the right time. I think our youth and inexperience showed today." Auburn capitalized on a first-quarter pass interception and a second-quarter drive to set up Portela kicks of 33 and 26 yards. Mississippi State blunted the Auburn offense after intermission but penalties and turnovers prevented the Bulldogs from putting together a scoring drive. Running back Joe Cribbs, who gained 159 yards on 36 carries, helped set up both field goals. The first came after defensive back Bob Harris intercepted a pass by Mississippi State's Dwayne Brown and returned it 36 yards to the Bulldog 23. On the third play, Cripps picked up six yards to move the War Eagles into field goal position.

In the second quarter, Auburn drove 70 yards to the Bulldog 10, with Cripps accounting for 34 on seven runs to set the stage for Por-tela's second field goal. Cribbs wound up with 159 on 36 carries. Mississippi State shut the Auburn offense down after halftime as quarterback Dave Marler began hitting on passes, but the War Eagles cut off the deepest penetrations with interceptions. The Bulldogs also missed on a field goal try from the 18 in their only first-half threat. 4-PLY POLYESTER CORD CTRAVWAY WHITEIVALLS TE6W AUTO BAT STARKVILLE, Miss.
