BOBBY WALLACE MADE UMPIRE IN AMERICAN LEAGUE. Chicago, June Wallace, former major league player, recently released by the St. Louis American league club. today was appointed umpire for the American league. GRAN SIGNS COLLEGE INFIELDER.

New York, June roll, crack third baseman of Fordham University, signed a contract day with the New York Nationals, it was said by the Fordham athletic thorities here. McGraw outbid both Connie Mack and Bill Donovan Philadelphia and New York Americans respectively. RABIES OR HYDROPHOBIA (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE.) sympto.is appear, as it is a servous disease and symptoms are not manifested until the brain, central nervous system, is affected. The virus of the disease does not invade the blood stream except perhaps to serve as medium for transmitting It to the nearest nerve tissues. The principal means of inoculation are, Ist.

Through the saliva. which carries large quantities of the poisonous material. 2nd. By contact with the nerve and brain tissues. 3rd.

Through the milk of the female. It is not the mere bite or jaceration of the skin which causes the disease, but the injection and absorption of the saliva containing the virus. Indeed a bite is not actually necessary, as any previcus wound or abrasion, ulcer or contracts the saliva will transwhich, disease into the body. The season of the year has nothing to d. with the appearance of rabios, aithough it is more prevalent in the Spring and Summer, than in the Fall and Winter, because it is during te warm season that the dogs, which are the chief carriers of this disease, are more apt to roam and it is from this latter fact, that the supposition arises that dogs can only have rabies during certain summer months.

I have seen animals affected with it, namely dogs and sheep, when the temperature was near the zero mark and covered the ground. Animals affected with this disease do not run in an entirely straight line and continue tho same course; they will vary their direction, turn back and retrace their steps, jump through or over fences, wade creeks or pools or swim ponds. In fact take any direction any course or vary same to suit their own delirious brain. One of the principal mistakes made by the average person bitten by a dog under any circumstances is to immediately kill the animal. This should never be done, if it is possible to secure the animal, for the disease may be communicated by an infected animal ten (10) days and in rare cases two (2) weeks before the symptoms develop in that animal, and for this reason when an injury is received by a person from the teeth of a dog, the animal should be immediately confined in a place with plenty of light, fresh air, food and water and kept under normal conditions for observation by a person familiar with the disease, in order to see what developments will occur.

Symptoms of the Disease in the Dog. The first change in the animal usually noticed by careful observer is the change in disposition, the dog preferring to remain perfectly quiet, and seeking a dark place in which to rest. He appears to be depressed, lazy and even stupid. This condition usually lasts one or two days. The appetite then begins to fail and a constant desire for water is present.

Shortly the animal appears to return to the normal. He begins to appear alert, with just a slight sparkle in his eyes. If called to he will respond with unusually alacrity. He develops a disposition to romp and play to an unusual degree. Occasionally giving forth a bark or cry of a hoarse note.

This latter condition is caused by the slight paralysis which is beginning to appear in the throat. The membranes of the mouth are of a deep pale color and very dry. This condition lasts perhaps twelve to twenty-four hours, and at the end of this time, the dog begins to show symptoms of an alarming nature. The slightest noise startles him and he appears ready to defend himself, this is the third and last stage; the one in which the disease is perhaps advanced to the brain, and vital centers are now being disturbed. The animal assumes a disposition: to be cross, ill-natured and vicious, while the membranes of the mouth assume a darker color.

The lower jaw drops, leaving the mouth slightly open, with no ability to close same. This is due to a paralysis of certain muscles in the region of the throat and jaw, and is not well marked in all cases, in fact may sometimes be entirely absent. The saliva now becomes a ropy fluid and begins to flow copiously from corners of the mouth, efforts on the part of the dog to swallow causes the saliva to become frothy like. Paralysis of the throat is now about complete. A burning thirst is present; efforts to drink brings on a nervous convulsion.

The voice is now completely changed, the bark is a mingled note of alarm and warning. It is a tone which is frightful to the human ear, which when once heard is seldom forgotten. The animal goon assumes A very restless state, delirium Succeeds consciousness, and the dog no longer able to control himself, starts on his wild career toward death. snapping and biting in his head-long Aight any object which crosses his path or his vision. Trees, fence posts, other animals and human kind beings alike his prey.

He may in his delirium bite and tear his own flesh. Dogs are his main victims, being of a natural tendency of a fighting nature. Death orcurs in from two (2) to four (4) days, though usually he meets with violence sooner. Treatment. Rabies had no known treatment until Louis Pasteur, the eminent French bacteriologist, gave to the world the benefit of his vast research and periments out of which grew the treatment we have today, bearing his name.

It is beyond any question of a doubt the only known and accepted method of defeating death when an infection has occurred. This treatment is entirely a preventive one, and avails nothing once the disease has developed, but its known percentage of fectiveness when given in time makes What Personal Service Means Palm Beach Suits 35c Pressed Washed Scientifically As They By Hand Spotted Should Phone 415 HOTELS TAILORING CO. 111 DeSoto Street. This treatment consists in a series of inoculations of the virulent material from an animal previously infected 'or this purpose. The animal usually selected is a rabbit or small hare. After this animal dies of the disease his spinal cord is dissected out and exposed in a suitable container to a chemical, having the power to absorb from this cord a certain percentage of its moisture, thereby reducing the amount of its virulency or in plainer words reducing its strength or its poisonous ability. Sections of this spinal cord are now clipped and reduced to a liquid state of dissolving in liquids, and these liquids together with the dissolved portion of cord are injected under the skin in the region of the abdomen, by means of a hypodermic needle and syringe. The amount of material used and strength of spinai cord depending entirely on how long since the infection occurred and its nearness to the brain.

The treatment usually requires from ten (10) to twenty-one (2i) injections. Two injections a day being given until the system is thoroughly permeated with the virus, then one injection a day tintil the treatment is Anished. This treatment has been perfected until at the present day about the only questions in regard to it are: 1st. Has the patient been received! early enough for the treatment to combat the disease? Ans. The earlier the treatment is begun, the better it is for the patient.

2nd. Will the patient submit to the I treatment until it is entirely completed? Ans. Because once the treatment is begun, if it is abandoned, the person is then surely infected, and death is certain to occur. What To Do When A Dog Bites A Person. Secure the dog, confine him under normal conditions.

Have him carefully observed by a Veterinarian or some person competent to recognize visible symptoms of rabies. Send for a physician to cauterize and dress the wound immediately. If no veterinarian is obtainable to observe the dog or it is impossible to secure the animal, he should be killed by shooting through the body. The head should then be carefully removed and placed in a tight box, securely nailed and sent to "Pasteur Institute" New Orleans, Louisiana, "Care of Charity Hospital." where it will be given a scientific examination and a test made on other animals by means of the saliva yet remaining in the mouth. The treatment itself is free.

the Pasteur Institute being a part of the State Charity Hospital. The only expense incurred by treatment is for railroad fare and boarding.
