MARYLAND Curtis Turner Easy Half Track Victor In Conococheague Speedway Feature Wally Campbell Baker 3rd In 15-Mile Event Turner Covers Course In 16 Minutes, Six And Eight- Tenths Seconds--Crowd Of 4,000 Fons Witnesses Trock's Inaugural Program By JOE 8NYDER Taking the lead at the outset and setting the pace throughout, Curtis Turner of Christianburg, Va. roared to victory in the gruelling fifteen-mile feature stock car event at the new, lightning-fast Conococheague yesterday afternoon.

Turner, a consistent performer all afternoon in his brown-and-tan Ford, was an easy half-track victor over Wally Campbell of Trenton, N. J. 400 On Hand Over 4000 spectators witnessed the new track's inaugural program. The bleacherite-o were sent scurrying shortly before the utart of the first qualifying heat by a cudden shower but the skies cleared shortly thereafter and the track was none the worse for the remainder of the afternoon's card. A total of $3.000 was distributed in purses during flie program. Turner Takes- Match Race Turner, In, acldHion to hauling down top nioney in the feature, also took the special match race between the three cars turning in the fastest times of the day. He whipped Campbell by four lengths inthe added five-lap event, with Shuman trailing in the rear.

Co-owners Stanley Schetrompf and Mike Shank announced that a big car racing card would be offered for the track's second show next Sunday. The Cubs pounded Curt Simmons and Sam Nahem for 14 hits in the second tilt, nailing down the decision with a six-run outburst in the third. Walt Dubiel outdueled "Dutch" McCall in the opener. In the nightcap Eddie Waitkus, who was making-his debut in the outfield, collected three singles. Bob Rush succeeded Ralph Hamner in the fourth and allowed only two runs the rest of the way for his third win.

The Sox then continued their attack on Alex Kellner and Bob Savage. Allan Gettel went the distance for Chicago for his fourth victory of the year. One of the runs he allowed was a homer to Scheib in a pinch-bitting role with two down in the ninth inning. Altogether, Gettel gave up eight hits.

Scheib won his own game in the eighth inning of the opener when he tripled and came across cm Sam Chapman's single. Earl Mack managed Philadelphia in the second game as the intense heat got the best of Connie Mack and forced him to retire his home. Although still in fourth place, the wins put the Pirates within three games of the league top. Vie Lombardi went the distance to win his seventh of the season against a similar number of defeats.
