THE STATE JOl'RXAl. Sot, Jan. 19. 1963 Friday Evening TV Dick Van Dyke Analyzes Status Symbol Syndrome c-9 allows, when you can call the following people anytime of the day or night Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine, Tony Curtis, Huntx Hall, Sammy Davis Peter Lawford, Pablo Pascals and Carl Sandburg. "And it's important that you fly to New York at least six times a Dick warns, "and see that it dutifully appears in the trade papers.

It doesn't matter why you go to New York. Go visit your mother. Go to Toots Shors. Go to the Radio City Music Hall. But go." When you can zoom through the studio gates without stopping for the gateman then you are definitely a celestial body.

"But," says Dick, "if you have a passenger you want to impress you can stop and the gate-man will call you by your first name. "This shows you are a regular guy. You, in turn, ask him how his wife and kids are. He'll say fine even though he's a bachelor." Dick said his last indication of the successful status symbol was to have gold chains and slave bracelets on your wrists. The more the better.

"I knew one fellow who was so successful out here that he had at least 20 solid gold chains on his right wrist." Dick said. "He walked around with a permanent list to starboard and when you shook hands with him you had to use both your hands to lift his up to shaking posi- KENT UtLUAE. 'This shows you are an individual, highly sensitive and a complex person." Dick says, "even though the word lgets around that you're just chicken." You have also arrived. Dick Stars Envy Livestock Treatment O. so you want to be an actor! If you think it's all convertibles and caviar, just ask Richard Egan and Ryan O'Neal, co-stars of "Empire." The two rugged actors didn't object to the rugged New Mexico winters, where it's usually 15 to 20 degrees in the predawn hours when they head for the location sites some 30 miles outside Santa Fe.

Nor did they object to doing their own stunt work, riding either a horse or helicopter from sun up to sundown, or some of the other hardshins of hectic outdoor location filming. What has the boys envious is the special consideration given livestock used with such frequency on the series. In one episode, the company had to avoid a desirable photographic location because a herd of deer were nested down for the winter. In another segment, the cattle were rounded up into a thermostatically heat controlled barn before the actors were dismissed for the night. At all times the horses have humane society agents standing by to see they are not overworked in the scenes.

"I don't want to be treated any better than the livestock," Egan sighed after an eight-hour stretch in the saddle. "I just want to be treated as an equal! Accidental Actor Yoshio Yoda, who plays Fuji in "McHale's Navy," was a cinema major at the University of Southern California until he became an actor by accident. He was tapped by M-G-M to play a young Japanese who could speak both English and Japanese in "Horizontal Lieutenant." "It was then," said Dick Van Dyke, "that I ran into the fine art of establishing status symbols.

Up until then the people 1 knew in show business considered themselves lucky if they had two shoes on their feet and enough money in their pockets to buy a beer and a pretzel." But in Hollywood, the slring-bean-thin comedian discovered that once you have "arrived" as a big name television personality there are certain things expected of you that will definitely prove you are a star. After investigating them for two television seasons now, the amiable Mr. Van Dyke is ready to sell these secrets to the highest paying foreign power or mail them in a plain brown envelope to any viewer of his Wednesday night show. "First I found out about cashmere sweaters," Dick said. "They must be worn with blue jeans.

Anybody can afford a suit. But expensive cashmeres, with the most beat-up jeans you have, prove you are really a VIP of some kind." Dick allows that when you can get on the phone and call Hedda and Louella just to say hello not give them any news then you are always sure of a good table at Chasen's or Romanoffs. 'The more money you make, the less you carry on you. Howard Hughes and President Kennedy never carry cash on them. So why should you get a bad reputation by going around with a few thousand bucks in your pocket?" The comedian advises the status seeker to have a listed phone number on the grounds that anyone can have an unlisted number.

"Of course," he adds, "when anybody calls, your secretary says you're out." If you wear a gold watch so thin that the hair on your wrist covers it like a jungle and you can't tell the time by it, all well and good. And its important to have custom-made shirts made with no monogram on them so no one will know they are custom-made. "And you drive a shiny old La Salle instead of a Cadillac' Dick suggests, "and people will think you're just an eccentric millionaire. It helps if you can get your unemployed brother to act as a chauffeur." Playing the point game in the studio commissary is another very important status symbol, Dick reveals. "If a featured performer with a good Nielsen rating says hello to you then you get one point," he explained.

"You get two points if he or she has won an 'Oscar or an 'Emmy. Three points if their show is a great SELLING Your Home? mmmm IHI EAST SIDE ITUujttuj A uthorixed Sales amd Service Easy Frigidatr Maytag Ironrrte Emerson Television .016 E. Horsinq Around You might think that one bucking horse is the same as another, but stuntman Jerry Gat-lin knows differently. He was summoned to Santa Fe, N.M., to do a bucking horse stunt for an "Empire' episode. Gatlin showed up, but he said he doubted if the scene would work in New Mexico. And he was right, it didn't. They had to go back and shoot it again in Hollywood.

There were two reasons first, the New Mexican horses were not trained to buck properly (they wouldn't rear up, buck or lay down as scheduled and, second, the high altitude of Santa Fe made the horses tire faster.
